  1. (I presume PP is PIAA accredited) I have a strong feeling, however, that it is against the Dogs Victoria Code Of Ethics for breeders to sell to ANY commercial pet wholesaler or pet shop (but my copy of the COE is in my filing cabinet at home, so I can't positively confirm that) .
  2. I have overheard staff in PP one day telling potential customers that the fluffy doodles in the window had registration papers. There is way more than meets the eye to this story. It reeks. I belive they charge extra for the vaccinatiom certificates, which they refer to as "papers". I also find it hard to believe that a Registered breeder would sell to PP (not that I think they are all angels, just that they could get much more money selling privately)
  3. I meant to mind of a poodle was what intrigued me! The face actually doesn't appeal to me... But if poodles are as mentally demanding as collies I'm out. I just thought we could learn lots of tricks and such. :D ;) How could you NOT love this face? ETA - not to mention the lovely shot of his dad's butt in the background
  4. How are your fingers? Honestly, I don't know about Cairns but you can't ruin the look of a Border through stripping it'll grow back if you pull any undercoat out accidentally, and it's the same length all over so :D Good on you for learning how to do it :D A friend and I handstripped another friend's Border Terrier at an agility trial once. Foolish foolish owner leaving a Terrier with two poodle owners. We stripped out her body and left her with lovely puffy legs... Dutch clip terrier style. Have you got pictures?
  5. A Poodle I bred has a tracking title, and they're not a breed you would necessarily think of as a "natural" tracker
  6. My ex & I got our 1st Standard Poodle ( and the 1st dog either of us had ever owned) just over 30 years ago. We wanted a largish dog which would be protective, yet would get on with our cats (we had Burmese & Siamese & were breeding & showing). A friend of ours who had cats had the most fantastic Miniature Poodle and we told her that we would love to get a Poodle, but needed something bigger (we had NO idea that Standards existed ) She recommended we look at a Standard, we ended up buying one from a lady who was/is one of New Zealand's top Standard Poodle breeders and who became quite a friend of ours over the years - we have had 4 dogs from her & she has had one from us! Neither of us knew anything about dogs, but we did some research, read some books and enede up with the most fantastic breeed of dog. OK, Poodles are not for everyone - they are feisty, intelligent, naughty (if they are not given enough mental stimulation) and require regular grooming. But they ARE, in my totally biased opion, the best, most loving companion dog you could possibly wish for.
  7. Yes, certainly a stunningly unusual look - couldn't imagine my guys "corded" - too much work
  8. Had it been fatal, he would have been a shoo-in for the "Darwin Awards" :D
  9. I got my 1st Standard Poodle nearly 30 years ago, and have been a regsistered breeder for 16 years. Now I think that life without a Poodle is like a broken pencil - pointless ETA - I'm also a trained Dog Obedience Instructor - but that doesn't mean MY dogs are well-behaved!
  10. In my experience, young Standard poodles are VERY high energy... they leap, bound and run with great vigour. They need consistent firm boundaries not to become teenage monsters. 20 minutes around the block a couple of times a week is not going to keep such a dog exercised. If you're not up for the commitment of obedience training and exercising a LARGE athletic dog, pick another breed. Perhaps a smaller poodle? This is ABSOLUTELY true!! Add to that the fact that Poodles are very intelligent dogs and, if you don't keep them occupied, they'll find something (usually naughty and/or destructive) to occupy themselves.
  11. Yep this was going to my suggestion when I read your criteria. I wouldn't get a Kerry Blue for the reasons mentioned above. Schnauzers are great dogs and much better looking than poodles too! :D (sorry but the narrow heads and faces on poodles just don't appeal to me). :D  :D Hw could you NOT love this widdle face?
  12. That pretty much sums up my 2 boys :D What is it you don't like about the Poodle appearance? Is it the "Continental" (or show) clip? If that's so, pet Poodles are normally kept in "lamb" or "sporting" clip - like Harrison & Dylan
  13. This is one of the pictures of Sirius sent to me by his owner not long ago - a beautiful big boy and obviously much-loved
  14. I'm in Menzies Creek - I heard the siren about 1 1/2 hours ago & we heard the water tanker fly over not long ago.
  15. Mangoes, peaches, strawberries or ANYTHING the other dog has
  16. Just got an email from a lady in Tasmania who bought a puppy from me in 2008. His name was Sirius and he died at around 11pm last night from bloat - that horrible and painful condition. She had recently sent me some pictures of him - a lovely boy, another son of Harrison & brother of Dylan. Run free, Sirius.
  17. Errr - I rather think that's impossible, for reasons which I won't state
  18. It is human nature, generally, not to value something you get for nothing. For this reason, when I had to rehome my 3-year-old bitch, Sally, a few years ago, I advertised her for $500.00. This cut out the people who wanted a Standard Poodle, but didn't want to pay for it. A lovely young couple came to look at her - she took to them straight away, the woman was a groomer and could have Sally at work with her - perfect situation. When they offered me the money I refused to take it - finding the right home for Sally was the main criteria, putting a price on her just weeded out the idiots! Too bad the OP has not come back to the thread to see what breeders have to say!
  19. No idea why they weren't included in the original standards. Quite a few poodle folk are concerned that if allowed in, the quest for flashy markings will see the overall quality of dogs plummet. I can see their point. Oh, do they REALLY think so - it's not as though some breeders are breeding solely for colour right now, is it? Yes, and isn't the standard and temperament of some of those dogs a case in point against doing it. My thoughts exactly!

  21. Or people who tell their children that the policeman will take them to jail! I totally agree about pople being de-sexed. This poor kid - I can see her getting chased & bitten!
