  1. My 2 boys are Harrison - named after George Harrison Dylan - named after Bob Dylan ETA - KHM, Eric Clapton is my absolute GOD but I wouldn't saddle a dog with either name
  2. Don't get a poodle if you don't want your husband stolen and to be simultaneously evicted from the bed?? OK - you got me there  Mr.Poodlemum had never had a dog of ANY sort till he met me - now he bends people's ears with the wonders of Poodles.
  3. as a former GSP owner, I can certainly relate to that I loved the look of Poodles from the get-go. I would just say Don't get a Poodle if: - ummmm,as a veteran of 30+ years of Poodle owning - can't think of ANY thing :D
  4. Sorry I didn't post this yesterday - Happy Birthday gorgeous little man - you share the day with my Mother :D
  5. Hey poodlemum, I have bought 2 of his books The BARF diet and The pup one, looking forward to them coming :-) .. I feed our boy Leading Raw Guide Dog approved patties mainly due to this is what the breeder had him on and it is convienent for me at this time and I'm a bit scared to go it alone lol.. Hoping after reading his books I will feel more confident :-) But I joined a yahoo group raw feeding puppies and bloody hell I got slammed for feeding patties and and got slammed for getting the books lol so I left the group ... Glad someone else has read his book and I am hoping to get a lot out of them :-) some of those people on Yahoo are pretty intense  The only reson I never went for the patties was because, with 5 Standard Poodles, it worked out a bit exxy
  6. I bought "Give Your Dog A Bone" back in the 90's and have fed my dogs according to Ian Billinghurst's recommendations ever since - they are certainly a lot healthier for it. I don't get the commercially-made BARF patties, but feed main raw meat, raw bones & veges.
  7. I know they WERE affiliated when I was trialling - went to a couple of trials there.
  8. Have you looked here? http://www.northcoteobediencedogclub.org.au/
  9. What a gorgeous litter! Don't feel too bad about losing one - my Vet told me a long time ago that there's always a reason when 1 doesn't make it. Be glad you have 7 healthy pups & mum is coping well. '
  10. One thing I forgot, once the whelping is finished & mum & pups are settled - please take a photo so we can see them! Oh, and I can't count - it's NINE litters of pups I've raised  & I've got zillions of pictures.
  11. My main bit of advice - as The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy says: DON'T PANIC I have now seen 8 litters of puppies whelped & the best thing you can do is be relaxed so the bitch is relaxed. Stay with her, talk to her & encourage her but don't assume that you are going to have problems. The 1st litter I bred was 18 years ago - I had read EVERYTHING possible and was a real mess - the 2nd was much easier :D. If the breeder of your bitch is mentoring you, ask if it's ok if you ring her when the whelping starts. The breeder of my bitch was great - she was in NZ, though, so we ended up with a BIG phone bill! As others have said, good to ensure your vet will be available after hours - my bitches always seemed to whelp at some ungodly hour of the morning.
  12. I suppose you have tried to email her? http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/member.asp?name=STRIKEAPOSE
  13. Although, there are SOME dog owners.....
  14. We are not going to be in any rush, my hubby actually said if there is no medical or behaviou reason we will leave him be.. There is, I believe, a slighly higher risk of prostate problems in entire males who are not being "used". My ex & I had a stud dog who hadn't been used for a couple of years & got an abcess on his prostate gland. Unfortunately, the abcess burst and he died I would not recommend de-sexing a large breed dog, such as a GR, before 12 months, however.
  15. I like to hang around a certain Pet Shop chain's shops wearing my "Poodle, the only REAL Oodle" T shirt
  16. I think the thought of dogs just eating meat is very primal....dogs have access to every food under the sun now... back in the day im not so sure they had ready access to carrots and pears :) meat would be the only thing running around.... I think this thread confirms that dogs like fruits and veggies a lot more then we do!! Dr.Ian Billinghurst, who wrote "Give Your Dog A Bone", says that wild dogs would consume the stomach contents of their kills, thus getting vegetables. As does Dr Bruce Syme of VAN. Yet there are also many wolf and canine experts that state that dogs/wolves leave the vegetation in their stomach and intestines alone. To each his own, but I would be inclined to believe the latter. I had a bitch who was an inveterate rabbit hunter & I can assure you that she ate the WHOLE rabbit, stomach contents & all

  18. I know THAT look well - my boy, Lennon, would do that - chew with the most disgusted look on his face, but damned if he was going to risk anyone else getting it! My boys will eat pretty much anything - not too keen on brussels sprouts or lettuce, though. My old GSP used to LOVE apple cores. Tralee - I have heard that about grapes, too.
  19. Glad she turned up safe & sound! I have 2 escape artists here who've given me a few bad moments
  20. Wow - this reminds me of a dog obedience instructor I had many years ago who told me that dogs only recognise ONE name  Harrison is known as Hazza or, alternatively, you useless piece of sh*t
  21. Exactly - don't judge people if you don't know the circumstances - my boys are quite happily crated for 12 hrs, even longer, overnight. Only VERY occasionally they might me crated for as long during the day - I think this preferable to leaving them outside where my psycho neighbour might get to them
  22. Hi Well, if you are ever talking to Italians and you get them repeat the word 'Maremma' you will quite clearly hear the correct pronunciation. Regards ahhh - I didn't realise they were an Italian breed :) OP - sorry for railroading the thread
  23. I asked the seller if she would do it have all the pups except one when me boy turned 5/6 yrs when she said no it was over...but i am new to this kind of thing another breeder did not want to sell me a pup but an already over bred dog with similar conditions now that i know this is not unusual i am fine with it so yeah thanks. What would you 'carry on his line with' in regards to a female dog? If my Babel fish is working correctly, you wanted to keep one of the puppies from a litter when the dog was 5 or 6. The breeder said no. Well, that's usually between you and the owner of the Dam. Another breeder wanted to sell you an older dog, an expeienced stud dog, but wasn't going to allow you to keep a pup from your own litter either. So now you think that all this is normal practice. It isn't It seems to me that you want a puppy and can wait 5 or 6 years but you also want to breed it yourself. Lastly, on this forum, you need to couch your comments in a much less "breeder bashing" fashion. This is a 'help' forum so if you still want a puppy, then get one without conditions attached. However, wanting a dog so that you can have one puppy in a few years time as an added extra is the wrong reason to be putting to responsible dog owners and ethical breeders. Good Luck Px Love it! Find your signature interesting - I've always pronounced the name Mah REM ah & now I know the correct pronunciation
  24. Chocolate or Brown Poodles are not as common as black, white or cream, but hardly "rare"
  25. They would go over a treat in Bairnsdale!
