That is really a possibility ( that dogs will be dumped ) but they are probably dogs who are not being cared for in the first place. If it stops another death of a child or person then it is worth it. turkishdelight, i think you will find it is the ones that are cared for and owned legally that will be surrendered, and the illegally, poorly owned ones will go on to give the diminishing breed a worse name Heresay. You have no proof of that.

Thank god for someone like Steve Austin to voice what many are thinking. Too too many attacks by this type of dog, when will it stop? I completely agree. Get rid of those dogs. The councils don't do enough, they are easy to buy, and the dogs kill their "prey". An innocent child has been killed, and her family will suffer for the rest of their lives. We do not need these dogs.

Does anyone know if there are any BOB photos available ?

I think it's only fair to point out that ALL of this breed has been introduced through imports, seeing that Border Terriers are not an Australian breed !

As soon as live exports were stopped to Saudi Arabia, chilled meat from Australia was purchased. The slaughtermen who tortured the cattle were human beings. They have no excuse and I am no religious scholar but show me where it says "torture the animal and give it a slow death" in the Koran? Stop all live exports now, it is the ONLY way. Julia Gillard who many of us voted for in an act of faith is on shaky ground if she does not act fast and with some courage. I could never ever contemplate exporting dogs to a country that treats any animal this way.

After viewing the Four Corners "A Bloody Business" I now will no longer eat beef. I also do not eat pork for the same reason. I love the taste of meat but because I can't be sure the animals have been killed with the quickest, kindest method I will now choose to go without. I have so little hope for the human race when some care nothing for the animals in their lives.

Everything must pass. Reading between the lines, with your long work hours and other commitments you can't spend a reasonable amount of time with your dogs, but you love them and they are familiar in their home. You are distracted from them with a lot going on, study, breakup, surgery etc At crossroad times like this in life often you have to be tough and do the right thing not the easy thing. I think you should put a lot of effort in trying to rehome both of the dogs together and see they don't suffer for your problems. That's what being a good owner is all about.

Firstly, you have no idea if the person quoted was accurate in her assessment of the dogs, she may have been exaggerating for effect because she didn't like the situation. Secondly, there are plenty of dogs that don't like walking into a new place with strange smells. I've got one dog that does that, shame on me for ever taking her out or to the vet? the quote says MOST dogs Can I just add that many dogs we take away from their owners to admit for surgery often act the same way. Some plant their feet when they realise they're not going back with their owners. Many need carrying. Even after a pre-med, some dogs still become quite nervous when you're giving them their GA. So is that 'shame on us' too? Are we terrible people for operating on a dog and fixing its broken leg, because the dog was scared prior to surgery? I can see I've hit a nerve. It is disgusting that our society, in it's throwaway nature largely looks the other way when huge numbers of pet dogs and cats are euthanased. I think it is shameful that a number of these condemned animals spend the last moments of their lives in fear and or panic. The resistance of a sick animal is not what I am talking about. If they show confusion at least they are there for the good reason of being healed not killed. If an animal is reacting badly it is a professional task to try and improve the situation, but that is not this topic. Sorry but you haven't hit a nerve, I'm just trying to highlight the obvious flaws in your argument that you cannot see. Do you realise these dogs are going to die anyway whether the vets learn from them or not? All protesting does is make their deaths even more meaningless. They still get euthed, don't you get that, but when they go instead of a grateful vet student giving them a cuddle while they go under they get PTS in a pound. Not any of that convinces me. ALL animals being euthanased should not suffer in any way due to fear or panic. That is the goal we should accept. I know it is impossible 100% of the time, but making excuses is, well making excuses. Let vet students learn in real life situations working with the close supervision of a highly experienced vet. A new graduate should not be treated as an experienced professional, even if they have done non recovery surgery. I don't think the deaths of the euthanased are meaningless if they are not used for a practice run in surgery. Their deaths are meaningful but in a shocking way. They are the surplus of many thoughtless people or acts. They are sentient, living animals. Their deaths show us how wrong we are to think we live in a good society that takes care of it's unwanted.

excerpt from the SMH article in the first post Former student Lisa Elsner said: "Most dogs were absolutely petrified - so scared that the students couldn't walk them on a lead through the door of the hospital. Shame on them.

That does not mean they don't care about the dogs. If the dog feels no pain, is unaware of the operation, and is not revived post-op, what difference does it make to them whether they are pts before or after? I just have a belief that many animals, not just dogs, communicate non verbally and feel in ways we don't appreciate or can measure. Even when they're unconscious? No, that's not what I meant, I meant in preparation for the event. I am not going to say that experimentation is not necessary, I'm just saying I have an uneasy feeling about a lot of scientific experimentation using animals, and I think a lot of other people do too.

I cant think of a single poster who's said that. Sorry, I haven't got time tonight to go back and find the references in the topic, but I understand a few posters feel it is perfectly ok to perform procedures on an animal prior to it's death as it is scheduled to die anyway.
-
Wow, what a long reading topic ! Does anyone else think we might benefit from a poll to assess how people feel about this topic by percentage of for and against ? What makes me uneasy is that most people would not know that when a dog/cat is to be euthanazed, that is not the end of the story. A lot of the public still think that the shelter or pound is a safe place for animals. I think most of us on this list knows that an animal in a pound has pretty much run out of luck. BTW, This is not vivisection ( experiments on live animals ) is it ? I think all vivisection experiments used to end with euthanasia. A lot were cruel, repetitive and unnecessary. I think the number of animals used for ethically approved procedures should always be kept at an absolute minimum not a case of there is a steady supply available and who cares about these animals because they are going to die anyway ? That is just so callous.

Vaccination Schedule For Show Puppies... Any Different?
brightonrock replied to Merrirose's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think the best way to socialise show puppies is to visit other breeder/friends in their homes. That way they can meet other breeds and other positive people. It is a mini version of the show atmosphere, not overwhelming, and you minimise the risk of disease. Vets tend to suggest later and later ages for pups to mix freely which makes good socialisation impossible, but it is pretty unwise to take big chances with a pup who may be the pick of the litter from a long awaited mating. I think the grounds at the shows especially the fixed grounds, eg Erskine Park and KCC park are not suitable for puppies prior to 12-13 weeks. -
Ffiona Erskine, Ffire Photography is the Sydney Royal Photographer this year. Website: www.ffirephotography.com. Ffiona is also on Facebook. Just read this notice on the "official photographers" website - I hope that next years "official photographer" will be willing & able to post the BOB pics whilst the show is actually on. Very disappointing Sydney Royal Easter Show 2011 Dog Section ... We are looking forward to the opportunity to meet and photograph some of the best dogs in the country. One of the most exciting opportunites of my life. A Foot note ! Images from the Sydney Royal Easter show will be available to be viewed AFTER the show is over and will not be seen on any social media such as facebook. Thank you for your patience and understanding, I will keep everyone posted . Actually if you witnessed the effort this photographer is putting in, 12 hour+ days and the extra mile she is going to get a photo the exhibitor is happy with, you might stop shaking your head and actually have a little respect. It's not just a matter of click and upload, there is editting etc that will happen also. It must be a nightmare of a job really, we can all wait a few days for photos after all

We have cleaned out plenty of stored furniture from corners of the sheds, and I think disturbed whatever spiders were there. It's not too bad, but we definitely do turn on the shed lights now and don't let the dogs go inside before us.
-
Thanks, for finding the info. A relief that dogs fare better than us, they're likely to nose around where they probably shouldn't. I can spray the sheds, so will do, might give them the hint they're not welcome.

I've noticed a couple of redback spiders in my garden and sheds lately. One was on a vertical web right in the doorway of my garage low to the ground. Can anyone tell me if they have had any problems with these spiders and dogs ? Also is there any real way you could tell if a dog had been bitten ?
