The 5mg/ml comes in a 20ml bottle, but I'm 99% sure the 20mg/ml comes in a 50ml bottle.
-
So you think it was a 5ml syringe that you saw. (Still too much I know) I'm thinking the receipt says 50ml because Metacam 20 comes in a 50ml bottle. If he did get 50ml, it should have cost you alot more than $15.20

I agree. All seems very odd to me??
-
Dead has nothing to do with movement or breathing, but pulse/heartrate. What was the vets reaction when you spoke to them re the reaction/overdose??
-
Ummm...... been around for the 10 years I've been administering it.
-
I'm confused. What do you mean by commercially available? As in from the vet? This form of Metacam (in your link) has been around for a long time. Edit to add: If you dog did receive 50ml via injection, have you been back to the vet and made a complaint or discussed this with the vet responsible.
-
I think you may be getting mg and ml confused!
-
50ml. Um........yeah, someone's got problems. Dose rate for Metacam (5mg/ml) is 0.4ml/10kg BW and for Rimadyl its 0.8ml/10kg BW So the dog must have weighed about 1250kg?? Large dog then??

I'm so sorry Choppa Chop. I cant begin to imagine what your feeling right now. I only just found out and am sitting here with tears streaming, and I don't even know you or Choppa. Myself and OH thought Choppa was the most beautiful dog ever. Take care, everyone is thinking of you right now.

Just double checked. It's 2-14 days according to a book I have. Another text book I have says 3-8 days.

What Are Dolers Feeding Their Dogs
Swizzlestick replied to Baileys mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My Afghan has Eukanuba Large Breed Adult (I'm very happy with it, so is he) and my JRT has Bonnie Working. Both will eat absolutley anything I give them though. Also a spoon of Nature's Gift can each night or table scraps -
Do you return the same way you leave. I'd pick it up in a bag, stash it behind a tree (as long as no-one is watching) and collect it on the way back. I live in the bush, and I've done this with my jacket many times whilst out riding my horse. Works for me

What To Expect After Her Operation?
Swizzlestick replied to MsDani's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A dog I once owned had a Cruciate repair too. He recovered very well. The 1st night he was a little sore, but comfortable. The bandage was ok to be removed after 3 days, then gentle walks around the garden from 10 days. He was a very calm dog, so I didn't really have to keep him entertained, but I think the Kong would be the best thing for your dog. As poodle wrangler said, just reduce the rest of the daily intake of food. Also, with pain relief, sometimes tonnes of pain relief meds are a worry IMO. Of course you want your dog to be comfortable, but also you don't want them feeling so great they are bouncing off the walls. They still need to know that if they jump around like a porkchop it will hurt a bit. Just my opinion though. -
I (for some sad reason) like the smell of it. (The Nature's Gift, not the farts ). My boys aren't farty dogs at all, so dont have that prob. I've toured the Uncle Bens factory in Albury, where I saw many different types of canned foods made. I can never really look at it the same way now. Ewwww! My boys get a tiny bit of Nature's Gift each night amongst other things.

That's also the way I've been told to do it. Rather than call off the walk altogether. -
Raw Meat: Where Do You Get It?
Swizzlestick replied to laffi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I buy minced meat from a pet store called Megapet Warehouse in Victoria. Not sure if it's a chain or not. They sell roo, rabbit, veal, chicken, beef, and puppy mince. (I'm sure it's not made from puppies though). ETA: Just googled and it seems there are 4 in Vic. No mention of other states though. -
SNAP Just wanted to add, once you shut her mouth and are rubbing her throat, make sure her head has returned to normal position. I see many owners holding thier dogs head right up and back. Try it yourself, very hard to swollow with your head stuck up in the air. If the dog refuses to swollow, blow some air on their nose, or syringe a drop of water into the corner of the mouth. OR Does she wait for you to drop food in the kitchen? If you drop a few chunks of mince meat on the floor (pretend it's an accident) she'll gobble it up. With the third piece, squash the tablet in the meat and drop it. It should go down so fast she doesn't notice.

I'm not sure a vet would prescibe a sedative for an elderly dog that is very overweight. They lower the blood pressure dramatically, and can be dangerous if they dog is not fit and healthy. Sure the vet would do a physical exam first anyway, and decide if it was safe. Also (as Poodle Wrangler said) sedatives won't provide any pain relief. The dog will still feel every bit of pain, he just cannot react to it like he would if he was completey awake.
-
I'd also suggest a trip to the vet. Like others have said, could be urinary, anal glands or worms. A lot of vets recommend monthly worming till 12 months old.

Nail Clipped Too Short - Bleeding

You can also use just a regular cake of soap. Just kinda scrape the nail along the soap to put a little plug in it. What you did sounds good too. -
Not So Forceful Force Dryer
Swizzlestick replied to Lowenhart's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've got this one too, so far so good. I only use it for about 1.5hrs a week. Becasue I live in area that gets pretty cold (it snows here) and it doesn't have a heating element, I was almost going to buy another one that heats up a little more, otherwise we'd be drying for hours. I spoke with the lady where I bought it, who suggested just buy a cheap fan heater and put it behind the dryer. Got one for $40 at Bunnings. Worked a treat. Just the right temp, not too hot or cold. I only do this on a cold day. I have a little chuckle to myself when I think back to me drying an Afghan with my own hair dryer. If I did that now, by the time he was dry, it would be time for another bath. -
Has Anyone Had To Amputate A Dogs Leg?
Swizzlestick replied to Mushaka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a 12yo cat that was attacked by a dog in our front yard. Fractured in 7 places and dislocated elbow. I didn't think twice about it. Off came the leg. Patrick was home 2 days later, eating, purring, up to his usual tricks. Only thing he had to learn was how to stand with his front leg in the middle, not at the side. He did one little face plant into the carpet, learnt from it, and never looked back. He was still able to run fast and climb fences. He lived til he was 18. I had no regrets wat-so-ever. His leg was so badly damaged I didn't really have a choice. I've seen many people try and fix legs with similar injuries, it has turned pair shaped and weeks later the leg has to come off anyway. Too much trauma for the animal IMO. -
A thermometer from the Chemist should cost you about $10. Don't know if they still sell the mercury ones, but a digital is safer if you are gonna buy one. Feeling the skin in the groin area as kitkat said is a good indicator, but even then they sometimes feel hotter than they really are.

The Proheart Inj is given often at the clinic where I work. One of the vets refuses to give it at all, as a dog died at a clinic she used to work at. I won't give it to my dogs after speaking with her about it.
