  1. Yeah the majority will shrink to not much at all. Just the odd one that has an empty bag left for the remaining years. If there is any evidence of a testicular tumour, most vets will remove the scrotum too.
  2. Sometimes we do a scrotal albation (removing the testes and the scrotum) but only if there is reason for it. Most common reason is severe ulceration of the skin. If castrating a mature dog with rather large testes, occasionally an owner will ask for the scrotum to be removed. The older the dog and the larger his "manbits" the less likely the skin is to shrink. Most often, and most clinics do this, it's just the testes that are removed.
  3. I'd suggest taking him for a walk on lead. It's a load of rubbish that a male dog desexed a few days ago cannot have SOME exercise. As you've found out, NO exercise at all will send em crazy. Far better to go for a 15min controlled walk.
  4. The other thread says going to visit two breeders tomorrow and hopefully put a deposit down. Unless I've missed something.
  5. I was thinking the same thing. Not going to marinate too well through all the cat hair and skin! Mentally disturbed, definitely!
  6. Of course I agree with the bolded bit, but I don't think this will happen. Penalties for animal cruelty are now way near what they should be. It will be easy enough for him to do something like this again he that's what he wants to do.
  7. I'm not looking for a house sitter, but I'd have no problem if it were a foreigner. Elina, I think you and your OH sound like you'd make great housesitters.
  8. I heard a snippet of this story on the radio. They didn't mention the cat was still alive! I had the impression he must have already killed the cat and was marinating it. Thank god the poor cat is OK. Lets hope this sick man doesn't get the chance to harm any more poor creatures.
  9. If the chip has migrated outside of the scanning zone, which yours has, it is the done thing to place another one. The old one is left there too, and when the paperwork is faxed to which ever registry it is to go on, a cover letter is written explaining the situation and also including the other microchip number as well. I'm surprised the vet told you this. (Or was it a nurse?) I'd discuss it with them again, or take him to another clinic to be done. You could also contact the microchip registry that your dog is already on and ask what they suggest.
  10. I recently removed one of my whippets chips and had him redone. The old one had migrated right down to the point of his shoulder. Whilst this area should still be scanned, it would be easier to miss than right where it should be. There is a type of chip now that once it's inserted somehow adheres to the tissues where it was placed. Not sure of all the details though. We only use the standard Trovan chip where I work. Very true about the person doing the chip too. It can make a huge difference. Staranais- I couldn't imagine a clinic ever charging just for scanning a chip for anyone, if they do........well, that's just wrong.
  11. They are his Xmas eyes! That's a breed of cat that originated in Italy. He's very patriotic.
  12. So it is not illegal to sell un-microchipped puppies unless you are commercial breeder. Puppies must be microchipped before they are registered with the council at 3 months of age. Thanks. I knew all dogs from 3mths had to be microchipped in order for them to be registered with their local council. Just was confused about if a pup was sold at 8wks for example, should a registered breeder have the pup chipped or is it the responsibility of the new owner. Thanks for your reply.
  13. Yes I have a tad! I don't know the breeder personally. They are a client of the vet clinic I work at. I know they are registered as they have a prefix and advertise on this very site.
  14. Thanks for your replies everyone. The reason I ask is just that I know of someone who myself and others had considered to be a "good, ethical breeder". But I've recently found out the pups have been getting sold without microchips and also with no papers. (Unsure though if the new owners just didn't get a copy of papers, or it the litters weren't registered at all) I know they are a registered breeder in Victoria.
  15. Hi all, I just have a question about breeders. I'll admit I don't know too much when it comes to what is correct/regarded as ethical Is it common for a registered breeder to have a litter that doesn't end up being registered? (either main or limited) Or does every litter get registered regardless of show or pet homes. Also, in Victoria, are all pups supposed to be sold with microchips? If it's not illegal to do so, would you regard a breeder who does sell without microchipping unethical? Thanks,
  16. Would love to see a video of some of these antics!! All sounds very cute.
  17. Firstly, sorry to hear about the loss of your cat. We get quite a few home made cat baskets, some exactly as you described. Nothing wrong with making your own as long as it's secure. I can't imagine any vet would consider you a bad owner for doing this.
  18. I had a cat put a canine right through my fingernail last week. Eek! OMG That all sounds so painful I've had to remove two cat claws from a clients eyelid. Stupid owner fumed when I asked her to put her cat in a borrowed cat cage. When she was fixing the account at the end of the consulation the cat took fright, pounced on her face, and claws straight into her eyelid. She kept pulling that cat away from her and her eyelid kept stretching right out.
  19. Poor little pup As a vet nurse myself I've heard some shite come from the mouths of other nurses. Had a client come in the other day asking for advice about buying a purebred from a registered breeder vs just buying one of the same breed from the paper. This particular nurse came out with "it doesn't matter at all. The only difference between a backyard bred dog and one from a registered breeder is that one has papers. That's it" ;) I butted in and had a good chat to the client and (hopefully) he is now headed for an ethical registered breeder.
  20. Good link but I don't think it's really relevant to Australia, as most of the breeds there aren't even in Australia. JRT? I've never known anyone to confuse the two!
  21. I bought a kg from Leonards at Wendouree (Ballarat) once. Got it home and opened the bag, then threw it in the bin. Was pretty rotten. I know it was most likely a one off, but I just haven't gone back!
  22. We have a large L shape couch. 7 seats in all. The 4 whippets have one part of the L, whilst hubby and I sit on the other part. In the other lounge room there are two super comfy 2.5 seater couches. Sometimes the whips will end up in there if they're cold (that's the room with the fireplace) If they think it's bed time they'll totter down the hallway and jump on our bed. So to answer the question, we sit on our couch. They often curl up on our laps, or their side of the couch!
  23. What a Good luck raising/training a husky if she cannot even handle two whippets. Doesn't get much more low maintennance than a whippet or two. Poor little dogs. Hope they're happy at her parents place. Some people just don't deserve ANY dog at all, regardless of breed.
  24. Sorry!!! I'm as usual, getting dogs confused! Glad everything seems fine for now
