Why Don't You Holiday With Your Dog?
Swizzlestick replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've never really thought about it, but I can see why many of you would be more relaxed leaving them with friends/rellies or the kennels. My lot are no trouble at all, but I guess they're not all as chilled as my lot. -
Why Don't You Holiday With Your Dog?
Swizzlestick replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our 6 couldn't come to Africa or Canada with us (that would have been interesting) but we do stay at dog friendly accomodation when we want to take the dogs, usually down the coast near Johanna somewhere. My parents have recently bought us an offroad camper so we can take the dogs camping now whenever we go. First trip was this weekend just gone, and they loved it. We took our handycam thingo with us OS at Christmas, not to take videos but to watch home videos of the dogs playing. We couldn't watch it though. We both got teary the minute we saw them As much as we love a nice OS trip, we really miss the dogs too much and couldn't imagine a local holiday without them. -
Relationship Between Dog Size, Yard Size And Exercise?
Swizzlestick replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
4 Whippets, 1 JRT, 1 Afghan Hound 10 acres They all get aroud 3 hrs of free running each day, otherwise it's just weekends that they leave the property (ie walking on lead). -
I recently had one of my whippets with me and I had a couple of shops to go to. Was about 28 degrees outside. The petrol station, Bursons Auto, and the aquarium. She came into each shop with me, even just to pay for petrol. Far too hot to leave her in the car for even the shortest time. The shopkeepers all loved her, and agreed " of course you can't leave her in the car, not today it's too hot" If I had to take her home and come back into town it would have been an hour round trip, but that's what I'd do if I absolutely couldn't take her into a shop. Would never leave any of them in the car. (Otherwise I could have dropped her into my work - vet clinic- while I ran my errands.

I read in the article that they "scared if off the roof". Hope he/she had a safe landing and didn't fracture a leg or pelvis. Don't suppose there are too many ways to remove a cow from a roof though! Not something one sees every day!

My son was in 4yo kinda last year and they had a dog education program run in their class, it was done by the council to prevent dog bites. They taught the kids to present a closed fist first, so the dog could sniff it. So I practiced what I learnt that day. I didn't ask if I could pet the dog, but she walked up to me, so inviting me to pet them. I know if my hand wasn't a closed fist it could have got a better bite on me. But lesson learnt. And Sas, I don't feel foolish at all, I feel the dog owner was in the wrong for not telling me that her dogs are not good with other people and will bite. She never even apologised after the fact. I didn't realise you hadn't asked the owner. I don't think you can blame the owner if you've patted their dog without asking them first. I'd be pretty annoyed if someone patted any of mine without asking. (Because I'm very protective of them, rather than worried they might bite). Did the owner say "would you like to pat my dogs?" or you just assumed she wanted you to because she walked them near you? In my experience, many dogs are fine to be walked near other people/strangers, but try and pat them and they may become fearful and bite.

What's a little terrier thing? A small dog that resembles a terrier. Probably of mixed and dubious origins. Do mini schnauzers come under that category lol? The are terriers. Does it really matter?

Have You Ever Disliked Or Hated A Dog?
Swizzlestick replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
The majority of dogs we get in at work are PITA's. It is however a vet clinic so not exactly a relaxing environment for them. I'm sure most of them are nice dogs in their own homes or with their owners. NOISY, messy, anxious, often aggressive, difficult to restrain. Their behaviour really does depend on the owners though. Some don't/won't walk on lead, others need some major restraining just to be examined, fear biters and some so aggressive they are handled with a dog pole, others that will pee on you if you stand still for 2 seconds. I don't treat these dogs any differently in terms of level of care, but I will admit to giving a lovely calm, friendly quiet dog extra attention (ie pats and cuddles). The others just sh*t me to tears and I can't wait until the shift is over or the dog is discharged. -
At least you presented a closed fist to the dog to sniff first. Otherwise you might have lost a finger I've only ever met one nice Chihuahua. His name is Tod! Such a cutie owned by an elderly couple.

Thank dog there was no vet bill to go with it! Either mva or rubbish tox!! Glad he is home safe and well!

C5 Vaccines: Canigen Kc Versus Nobivac?
Swizzlestick replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Most likely the injection was for parvovirus, distemper and hepatits (ie C3) and the intranasal was for kennel cough (making it a C5) -

How the (&()*)_*)( do you get lost. LOL. Just what I was thinking. There is only one turn you need to make. -
Sorry you've found yourself in this situation equerry. I've never had to rehome a dog, but can imagine how heart-breaking it would be. Please hang around. Don't let the likes of JulesP and other nasties run you off. Not all DOLers are horrible know it alls. I don't know you from a bar of soap (just this thread) but you sound like an excellent owner. ;) JulesP: Why have you been so horrible in this thread :D Perhaps you already have it in for the OP from another forum? Did someone light the fuse on your tampon? Good luck equerry with the male Aussie in the new home, and the new dog that you'll eventually welcome to the family.

Looking For Info On Livestock Guard Dogs.......
Swizzlestick replied to Shazzapug's topic in General Dog Discussion
So sorry you lost some of your sheep. Sure someone will come along with some info for you. I don't know much at all about livestock guardians. But I thought rather than alarming, they would defend the flock themselves? Just thinking, not all herds are in a paddock near a house, therefore no humans to hear the alarm and come out with rifle or whatever. That was my understanding anyway. Good luck in your search. -
Sure will help! Doesn't have to be a long eared breed though. Regardless of the length of ear, the snood still covers right over the whole area, be it a JRT ear or an Afghan ear.

From the footage I've seen (below) I'd hardly call it chucking the dog like a piece of dirt. Sure, there are nicer ways to pick up a dog, but as if the ranger is going to bear hug a strange dog, that may have just been involved in attacking someone. I know I sure wouldn't.

So pleased your boy is doing so well!

Rare Or Disqualifed Colours In Breeds.

That doesn't look purebred to me Nor me, no way! -
I still think the sand pit is a great idea for any dog who loves to dig. I'm all for as much environmental enrichment as possible. :D
-
As much as I love the sand pit idea, I doubt this dog is trying to satisfy the desire to dig. She is digging purely to get out, because she knows she can do it. Each time she does it, she would be having a ball running amok, so why not do it again and again. I think if she was digging to dig, you'd have little holes all over the place, but she is digging to get out. I'd either try electric fence, the chicken wire trick, or a secure dog run on a concrete base. :D
