Annual revaccination of dogs has been an industry norm that is being challenged due to increasing proof that protective immunity lasts for longer than one year (and often longer than 4 years) and the knowledge that vaccinations may in some cases have detrimental side effects ranging from anaphylaxis to immune-mediated disease. Rather than merely stopping annual vaccination, dogs may have their immune status assessed to determine whether vaccination is indicated or not. This is particularly pertinent in at risk animals. Serological titre tests have been designed to measure the IgG levels and studies have shown that protection from infection can be determined with these tests.Further studies have shown that the IFA method is comparable to the gold standard haemagglutination test for CPV and the virus neutralisation test for CDV. Trisven13, I used Pigeon's pest controller 500 termicide and insecticide it has chlorpyrifos 500g/l this is a professional strength chemical you should be able to buy at your hardware store. It can be used indoors and out. I was going absolutly nuts until I used this, I sprayed the yard limed the yard bombed in theh house twice. I haven't had a flea since using it (touch wood) but my 400m yard and house used less then 10% of the litre bottle which cost me $50

Hi Guys I have found a product out of the US called Dog Tears, it is meant to assist with Dry Eye in dogs, they are a large gel capsule. has anyone tried them and are they available in Australia?

It is propably an instinct to have a good vantage point for protecting there territory.

Trisven13 I feel your pain at trying to rid the yard of fleas. I finally found a product that does kill them and keep them away. It is really poisonous and the animals have to stay out of the yard for 12 hours or until completely dry. I also used it inside as per the instructions. I got it at Mitre 10 but had to ask for it. "Pigeon's pest controller 500 Termiticide and insecticide" $50 for 1 litre but you only need to use a small amount. I did the yard and the house nearly a month ago and have not had a flea here since. Make sure you follow the safety instructions but we have had no ill effects from the dogs, birds or fish (all protected while spraying) and none of the kids had any reaction. I highly recommend this product good luck Edited to add: I tried lime and other chemicals and none of them made any difference. Bombing the house if you have wood floors may have to be done a couple of times.

thanks Malisa1, I'm sure it was just that everything was so wet and humid with all the rain here. the grass had grown long and I'm sure she was staying damp on her underside from going out in the rain. It has clared up since the rain stop and I have mowed the yard. so I'm sure your breeder is right about trying to keep these areas dry.

Hi Storm all is good got onto the vet and he said it was fine to go ahead and treat her. she is doing really well, went back for a check up yesterday. she has settled into family life great and is my new alarm clock waking me when she wants to go out of a morning. Sleeps at the end of my bed on Mats with Nala and Caesar.

food hasn't changed, just the wet weather and the boredom issue. and Mega's arrival so maybe a little stress

Nala has been getting a rash on her belly, under her arms and inner back legs I have been applying curash which helps but is a solution only a relief to the itch. is it just the wet weather or could it be something else? apart from the rash she seems well, she is flea free, but vey bored as it is too wet for playing in the yard her bordom is leading to so destructive behavour, we had snow the othe morning (she had destruyed 2 pillows that were on the outside couch) chewing shoes and anything else that doesn't run away, this is not her usual behaviour but maybe at 4 months she is just getting to that stage. could the new dog (Mega 9yr old St Bernardx female) be causing her any stress and setting off this behaviour? They get on really well. Mega doesn't play but she is happy for Nala to climb all over her without any reaction. I hate that it is so wet even if we do need the rain.

Mega has a cold and ear drops, eye ointment and is on Noroclav antibiotics. can I advantix her or should I wait to see the vet on wednesday

I had one tested last month and it was extra the vet took a small amount of blood and put into what looked like a pregnacy test kit and after 10 minutes the colour had not changed so all clear. having Mega tested tomorrow when we go back for a checkup and more meds so will find out how much as I cant remember.

thanks guys for all the advice and winterpaws I will look up the thread you mentioned. and yes I plan to keep her. We went to the vet and have eye ointment, ear drops and antibiotics. She is much better, swelling in one ear has gone done a lot. the vet said her ears will never be normal as she has old haemotomas. she can hear at last and we will tither test her for vacination requirements once she is well. I will get some vitamin C today, how much will she need and how often, she is nearly 70kg. she is just the best nature old girl and has put up with ears and eyes and bathing, nothing phases her and really loves a belly rub.

Hi guys Mega the Saint Bernard x has arrived safe and sound from the pound down south. She is a beauty, but has some skin, ear and eye problems. Her ears are very very swollowen and stiff but don't appear to be soar to touch and inside appears to be closed up and swollen. does anyone know what might be causing this and what can I do for it until I can get her to the vet tomorow afternoon. Her eyes where full off yellow crap and I have washed these out with water and they appear cleaner and she can see. She also has very snotty (yellow) nose. any advice until tomorrow. Also I was advised that a pup from the pound had passed away from pravo today. she was not near the pup and they parvac (i think thats what it was called)weekly my fur kids have had all there vaccinations, is it likely that she could be contagious?
