chloebear replied to chloebear's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have seen the light -
I was sure that when I had my previous dog desexed that she needed to kept quiet for a few days. I know after I have surgery I don't feel like going for a walk or running around.

Taking Timid Dog To Obiedence Training

I have started to socialise her more we are making tiny steps forward. -
I am so proud of my girl, we went to the vet yesterday to have her desexed, no problems getting her there. Just in case I dropped the kids of at my mum's so I can focus on her. We arrived at the vets early, so I had time to walk her around outside first to get her use to the scents of being there. Whilst outside another dog arrived and she didn't pee, cringe or yelp she just sat beside me. She walked into the vets, sat on the scales on command. In the afternoon when I went back to collect her, once again left kids with my mum because I thought might have to carry her out considering she was in a strange enviroment for the day. She wouldn't walk out for the vet nurse, but when I went around to get her, and said "lets walk" she walked wonderfully on the leash and we had a harsel free trip home. I am just so proud of the progress that she has made, this is the first time she was not reacted badly to the presents of another dog, strange people plus actually walked on leash away from home. Now that I have had her desexed, I have been told to reduce her food by 1/3 to 1/2 of what I was feeding her, is that normal for a six month puppy? She know weighs 17 KG stand approx knee height, breed unknown, guess ridgebach X. If I reduce what I am feeding her she will now be having 1/3 cups of dry biscuits morning and night. Second questions I asked about how soon she could start exercising and they said could take her for walk next day, this seems horribly soon to me? But then I myself have a very low pain threshold.

Have to go to vets on Tuesday to get her desexed, I am dreading trip.

Toby sounds like a wonderful BC, the kind that I would be hoping for. Always loved the breed but haven't been game enough to get one because I'm a bit of a couch potatoe.

Title Changed, Molly The Labrador's Thread.

I recently had incident with my rescue puppy, jumping on my two year old, knocking him over and then continuing to jump on him until OH pulled him off he got gravel rash to forehead and side of face, plus puppy was mouthing constantly on him. What I have started to do is when we are having dinner, the puppy sits outside (our table near door) and watches the family eat first and then the puppy is feed. I have also had to take a lot more of a leader role to the puppy so she has a lot more respect for me and then in turn is forced to respect my son more. When we are outside if the kids are running around playing I make her stay with me. My children including the two year old take turns throwing the ball for her but the ball will not be thrown until she is sitting nicely for the kids. With my previous dog, we where told at puppy preschool to use the spray bottle but didn't work to well for us, the dog loved water and thought of it more as a treat. Just some different idea's for you, but trust me I have my fair share of problems with my puppy we are only starting to make some progress now. When she first knocked my son over I was horrified and very worried and got a lot of really good advice from DOL Erny was very helpful to me. When ever my children are in the yard with my puppy I always keep her under my control as I don't want a repeat of my son getting hurt. If I can't be in the immediate area to supervise than I separate puppy and children to be on the safe side. -
Have no idea how I am going to stop her from jumping, I have an enclosure to put her in, but as soon as I go to get her out she starts to jump and only stops when she realises that I am not going to open gate until she sits...

On your side of the fence you could look at putting electric fence stand off (they will hold wire out from fence) and then run a couple of strand of electric fencing. Check in rural mags, etc probably can pick up the stuff second hand and then resale latter if not needed any more. edit - forgot to say check local council laws re electric fences in surban areas, don't want to upset neighbour anymore.

Taking Timid Dog To Obiedence Training

6mth rescue dog, large breed siezed because of abuse and neglect I have now had her for two months. She interacts well with myself and OH but when people call to our house and go near her she yelps (very loudly), wets herself, cringes or hides, same reaction with unknown dogs. Recently took her to vet, she wet herself when getting her out of ute, sat down and couldn't get her to go in, had children with me so vet came out and carried her in for me, and she wet on him as well plus the table when inside. Have looked into puppy preschool but it is also on of a night. We live out of town with two young children OH works away. Because of his rooster I can only attend obiedence for one month and then miss a month as the closest obiendence club is approx hour away and of a night. With being able to only attend month about, would she make progress? How do I go about getting her use to people and other dogs so she doesn't just cringe yelping whilst we are at obiendence. When at home with me, she acts like a normal puppy, sit, stay, come and she will now walk on leash on our property. Yesterday she worked very nicely to our post box about 200 mtr walk on our block, but then when I tried to get her to walk along the front boundry on road (dirt) she needed some firm presuading to do so, then walked about 100 metres along front. I was hoping to do obiendence with her and then to move onto agility training with her (hopefully), but can I go to obiendence with her given how timid she is, will a club be okay with me going for a month and then missing a month. -
I have managed to teach come and sit but am having no luck with getting her to stay. How should I be teaching her this?

I am sure that you haven't left it too late, my puppy is 6 months old and I am still working with her not to jump and mouth on my kids aged 2 and almost 5 and we are making progress everyday. My puppy is also a large breed of some kind (rescue puppy) so we have to make sure that we take control of her. Don't stress to much, remember it will take time and patience. Have a great holiday!

My son is almost 2 and I am still trying to convince him not to get up at 5am, doesn't matter what I do with him during the day. So I hope that you have better luck with your puppy

Was on Holidays last year when my little girl saw some dogs going for walk (large breed) in a outback country town and she was wanting to pat them. The man heard this and straight away said she would be more than welcome to pat his dogs because he likes to keep them socialised with young children, so he gave he a couple of dog treats, but the dogs into sit and let my 3 yr old (at the time) give them the treats and pat them, he made dogs stay in the sit position. I thanks the man for being so kind, and he said "no thank you for helping me train my dogs, they need to have contact with children" (I don't let my daughter pat other peoples dogs without premission from the owners plus until I am confident that the dog is safe)

Holly is almost 6 months old, getting desexed on Tuesday, she is a large cross breed (of some kind). How long do I need to leave it before I start excerising her, taking her for small walks and start playing with her again. I have elected for her to have the dilsovable stiches.
-
Just an idea, buy a extra large kong and start packing his breakfeast in it, that way he will have to work for it and therefore occupy himself for a while.
-
clean mine up with a shovel, but I have little kids so as soon as I notice a poo it is moved. So some days I clean up 4 times (puppy)
-
Holly 6mths diggs, so I burry her poo in the holes, it stops her from digging in that hole so then she just moves onto the next. She too has heaps of toys and gets played with.

My first vet said to me that she wished she could list her as a pure breed brown dog. -

Can't really see in this photo, but she does have black section along back and tail. Will take a current photo today and try to upload it....Will have to do it this afternoon. -
Current Photo's Taken approx 2 Months ago When I got her I was told that she was a rotti X mastif. Two vets advised that she is a red cattle....I can see some Ridgebach but the markings on her chest are red speckles plus red speckles on her back feet......(can't really see in the photo's). What do you think she is?

Nuisance Dogs (barking) And Council
chloebear replied to Kirsten44's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My neighbourhood, it is a case of pick the dog that isn't barking (rural subdivision).....grrh. Most have multiply dogs 3 or more, don't walk them or spend that much time with them, know they bark and just put the airconditioner on so they don't get kept awake. -
What is a furminator - are they hard to use
