When taking my previous dog to the vet, I was told that she had special needs "she would be a puppy for life" if she mastered sit, come and stay I would be lucky. Yes it took a lot of patiences and a few years but she turned out to be an amazing dog. If my daughter was in the paddock, I could tell her to round her up, and she would. In the end she gave her life to protect the kids from a snake which was where the kids where playing. We miss her greatly.

I was trying to convince Holly to walk on the leash, bribing her with food and we where making a small amount of progress until a frog crocked, she bolted and hide on her bed on the patio. So I went back to the patio about two metres from her, called her put her into sit before giving her a food reward. I kept repeating this until I had her sitting where the frog was crocking, is this how to handle situations that make her scared? closing car doors and loud noises. For those wondering, no it is not raining here the ground is brown and dead I think the frog is wishfull thinking

I have read in several thread about crating, but I am unsure of what is meant by a 'crate'.

I have had my puppy for about 10 days now, she is a rescue from a neglected abused litter with breed unknown. I have tried several different methods to get her to walk on a leash. I have clipped the leash onto her and let her drag it around she is happy to do this and couldn't care how long it is on. But once I try to take control and walk her she just drops to the ground I have tried to firmly presude her to follow but she just rolls onto her back. She will walk short distances for food rewards but then starts to jump to try to grab them so I seem to be rewarding bad behaviour of her jumping whilst on the leash. I really need some help quick because my daughter was devasted when our last dog died and all she wants us to do is take the dog for a walk. I have been training the dog twice a day with the sit, come and leash. Any idea's appreciated.

Whats Actually In Cheap Tinned Dog Food?
chloebear replied to ncarter's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thought I was doing the right thing when first bringing my puppy home from rescue shelter. Not knowing better at the time brought pal puppy, oh she gulped it down, but oh - the smell when it come out, the volume and texture absolute horrible to clean up. We are now using quality biscuit (puppy) with chicken necks, vegetables, fruit and sardines - much better -
I am so glad that you asked this question, I have been debating the same issue as I have a two year old and a four year old children. My four year old understands never to touch bones etc but the two year old can be unpredicatable even with supervision.

Thanks so much for finding the link for me. I have only recently started to use the forum, so I am still have my "L's" for learner but I am slowly getting better.

Sorry forgot to ask at obedience do you have to use check chain or harness? I have never taken a dog to obedience.
-
Do I need to have Holly trained to walk on leash before joining obedience club? At the moment I have to carry her when we are out, the moment a leash is attached to collar syhe drops to the ground and cringes. I can get her to take a few steps with food rewards held out in front of her. Before joining dog obedience should I wait for the remainder of her vaccinations to be done she has only had first batch? Plus get all clear from vet as she is on antibotics?

Oops! I gave her grapes this morning. Holly has a good chance of getting left over fruit and veg, two kids aged 2 & 4. ;)

My rescue pup did this as well, as if he did not walk properly he was dragged by his neck. I found rather than using a leash round his neck I bought a shoulder harness put it on left it on for days. Started clipping the leash while we walked around the yard. He now loves walks but goes back to gringe mode if a lead is clipped on his collar. Maybe some rescue remedy as well would be useful. Thanks, I will grab a harness when in town next and give it a go. This afternoon she just rebelled against the leash, and dropped to the ground and wasn't moving for no-one.

Can you please advise what fruit and veg I should be feeding to Holly. I have been advised to avoid onion and advocado. Is it okay to feed them left over cooked vege's from dinner including mashed potato (with butter and milk in it).

I have started to realise that a lot of the things I was doing to comfort the dog, treating it like a baby/child where making things worse. So I have loverly toughend up and we have made heaps more progress. When she gets scared at times she still has accidents, like this morning when I was giving her antibotics. She is starting to learn that if she wants to be patted, scratched she must sit and not jump. I no longer talk to her in a quite soothing voice like I do when talking to little children, instead I talk to her like an adult tone. We have also started to make progress with the leash, taking about 5-6 steps before stoping. My husband, children and I are expectional happy with Holly's progress she is following the kids around and playing with them.

She was a pound puppy due to be put down, when I got her she was listed as a rottyxmastif but both my vet and husband have said obvious cattle markings. Most people that have seen her doubt any rotty at all, they think maybe Ridgebach, staffyxcattle.

I am very happy and greatful for all help that I have been given. It is only now that I realise just how many things I did wrong in realation to the diet of my previous dog and I am not wanting to make the same mistakes again. The one thing that I can do for a dog without any doubt is to give it plently of love and attention (positive kind). Since discovering dogzonline from a friend I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can to ensure I do the best that I can do for my dog. So a big thankyou to everyone who has helped me. I am very sure that my dog will be greatful for many years to come.

Four month old puppy, previously had no training of any kind, how often should I be training her. I am wanting to teach her to walk on leash, sit, come, stay.
-
I have just been reading through some information on the health nutrition and grooming forums and they have heaps of information on different diet ideas. Sorry I can't be of any help, I am trying to work out what to feed my dog, breeders have advised fresh food diet but vet strongly advise dry food diet only (good quality) with bones! I am not planning to show my dog but I want to ensure that I take good care of her and we have her for many years to come.
-
This may seem like a basic question to most people but I am needing some help. My puppy is 4 months old, a rescue dog which hasn't seen much love and care. What kind of bones should I be giving her and how often? How do I stop her from guarding the bone as I have a two year old and don't want him to be bitten by going to close to bone. I do supervise my children when outside with the dog, but unfortunately there is always that spilt moment where they can do the unexpected. I am afraid I can't tell you what breed she is because she is a cross breed and the vet beleives she will grow to about 30-40 kg. She is on a dry food only diet Purina puppy food. But at present she is also having Yoghurt as she is on antibotics.
-
My vet has advised to use Purina - if buying from the supermarket, and it can be used as a dry only diet. I was using PAL - puppy which she suggested changing from. The vets first choice was the biscuit that they sell but I wasn't prepared to pay that much as both my daughter and husband will over feed dog. So I have changed to Purina and having no trouble.

Thanks heaps, my dog looks like a three, time to put on a little more weight. Minced lamb?
-
Thanks I will all worm her.

Puppy 4 months old, breed unknown but is predicted to be a large dog. At present I can see her rib cage does this mean she is under weight? How do you now?
-
I'd settle for one that actually shows up! Ain't that the truth !!!!! Try having a block toliet with two young children and being told sorry we are booked out for a month, we will put you on the urgent list maybe week or two. One plumber went so far as to tell me to dig my own pipes up. Got plumber after week (I cried on phone and begged for help) plus he was a friend of a friend. Got to the point I didn't even care what the bill was I just wanted a working toliet.

How many times a day should I be feeding my puppy. Rescue dog, breed unknown vet predicts as an adult she will weigh approx 30-40kg.

Thanks to everyne for your help, Holly (my puppy) and I are getting to know each other. She is starting to understand not to jump as I will only pat her when she is sitting - (still trying to teach husband to do the same with her). We have made some progress with walking on Leash will take a couple of steps my goal is to get her to walk in to her next vet visit. Overall I am very please with Holly's progress and I am very happy that we made the decision to rescue her from being put down. She will be going to puppy preschool in a few weeks so hopefully that will also give her some more confidence.
