for the dogs..no real worries most seem to negotiate their route well but if dogs are playing, big dogs like labs, then i stand clear cos i have been belted in the back of the knees by one some dogs dont seem to be aware of their speed and size..others do and grind to a halt when close to humans ..ive seen others jump over other dogs rather than barrelling into them with zoomies branches and logs are dangerous..have heard of a dog getting impaled on a log that had a stiff dried branch sticking out... but in your regular backyard it should be fine i watch out for things like wet steps or bits of wire sticking out from fencing..

Quick Question About Training In Drive
percyk replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i was travelling in the states a few years ago and saw people using squawkers to train sighthounds its a thing that makes a noise when rattled sounds like something screeching in pain lol awful but works for the houndies -
later when things are a bit more under control with the nipping get your son to feed and make sure she sits for the meal and respects the foodhandler by waiting for the ok cue we make ours sit or even lie down for their food and we handle their food while theyre waiting i initially do all the training but when the dogs are obeying me i let the kids do it too every member of the family has to be able to control the dogs also walking the dog at heel is good for the dog to learn respect and order once the pup is obeyingsimple commands train your son to walk and give cues to sit and wait at curbs and not to pull some dogs are dominant and grow up treating the kids as littermates...they bite and growl and the kids have to learn to be the dominant ones or this will continue train your son to walk in the room and totally ignore her til she is calm and settled

id just crate and put near bedroom door if you dont want her in the room when dog stirs you get yp adn toilet pretty soon they will sleep thru to 6 and beyond as they age some of ours will happily sleep in til 8am..theyre in the kids beds one will still wake at 6 or when the radio alarm goes on at 620 or so but on weekends i just let him out and he will happily snooze back in bed til 830 or evenlonger
-
ive boarded dogs in the past and in all the times...only once has there been a physical change ...weight loss and a sookiness for some time afterwards otherwise all fine..and nothing really changed id not worry about a breeder looking after the dogs
-
sorry christina you either missed my point or i made it badly i am saying that brush training is essential during puppyhood whenthe coat is still manageable so many people dont think to brush til it is long but the dog has had no exposure to the discomfort im glad some breeders give guidance but mine didnt...im a dog person so i found out what to do...the techniques needed for that breed but im sure lots of first timers dont realise that you cant wait til the coat needs grooming

my gsd desexed male was naturally protective in his body language but was not aggressive he was just super bonded to me so was my dachshund i know shelties can be protective ...get keyed up when strangers intrude in the owners space ...wonder if collie roughs would be too?

poodlefan sometimes it is hard to predict what dog is going to cross your path i guess you could have safe dog meets..with trusted dog friends but geez it is hard when youre just an ordinary suburban dog owner who is trying to exercise dogs safely without incident im not advocating keeping the dog at home through fear phases... this was a recommendation i read after reading about fear phases here on dol i never knew about fear phases... wish i did back then
-
i dont know that it is laziness on the part of the owners what new owners dont realise is how hard you have to work in the beginning to ignore the biting and growling and just keep brushing my daughters pup would have been a nightmare had i not sat him on my knee every night for a five minute brush with a baby brush he had only a puppy coat but i knew that thered be trouble ahead if he didnt grow used to it today he can be brushed and brushed - even the fur on his belly and back legs i can have him on his back and he will tolerate some tugging we dont let it get far...but golly if he were a big dog i think id have rsi by now breedersmust show the owners what to do ....i know that my two didnt ..we went to a show and asked as for pet shops..no chance of an education there

i had a male cocker attacked by a sharpei once..mine was onlead and doing beautifully at 18 weeks we passed a sharpei thinking it was sitting nicely with the picnickers but instead it rushed at us with the woman screaming and trying to catch it the very next week the dog got rushed by a bitzer mastiffy thing that was jogging off lead with its owner and actually crossed the road to head for me and the dog ruined all my hard work the fear was plentiful after that a fear of male dogs persisted but he was trained out of barking when walking on lead he was never confident round dogs off leash- ok with females but it was devastating-sucha beautiful temperament another dog of mine was attacked at dog obedience she is still a bit fearful and will go for the feet of any big dog that starts rough play another one of mine was mounted by a big boofy goofy lab at the beach when he was about 18wks fortunately his fear has not stayed but i was so scared that i had another dog with aproblem that is so hard to modify im thinking that maybe these fear phases are best coped with at home and you just dont risk taking your dog out..obviously mixed feelings about this i think you should frequent as many obedience sessions as you can...even if you sit on the periphery and feed the pup highvalue treats...and distract distract distract with lots of simple commands like watch and sit thats what i did with the last pup - i think thats what got him through it i didnt know these techniques 20 years ago...shame good luck you dont want a big dog with fear aggression so id call a behaviourist and get some help

How Does Your Dog Singal He Needs To Go Out For A Wee?
percyk replied to Snowball's topic in Puppy Chat
ours are older now so we know their pattern and of course they can hold on having a bitch even though shes desexed helps cos theyall trot and wait in line to pee over her patch as pups we talk them out some as frequently as every fifteen minutes now theyre all different one doesnt tell us at all...just seems to hang on when the others go and stand by the door one does paw at the bedroom door but not at the sliding door to go outside..he kinda does this woofling sound... we didnt teach any of them anything ...for the most when we are at home the door is open to the yard anyway if you taught your dog to speak then you could transfer this skill to standing by the door and giving a sharp bark -
are the maltcross shihtzu still popular i remember bourke did a big expose on them and even vets said how good they were ...something about tempering the flaws of both breeds i think as pups theyre cute but as adults they can be quite odd looking... tear staining is something i dont like in any dog but this seems to be quite a big prob with these little crosses i havent seen them in petshops the way i used to years ago oodles seem to still lead in popularity i like shihtzus...and the coat retains the beautiful markings..the crosses seem bleached out by the maltese gene

Keeping Working Breeds Or Big Dogs In Small Spaces
percyk replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
is doable none of my big dogs ever made use of any space i had to walk them cos all they ever did was sleep and wait for me to come home a yard is good for throwing a ball around but i cant fathom how dogs can survive mentally without going for long varied walks and lovely free runs on the beach these were a goldie and a german shephered dog i dont know how some dogs survive at some breeders complexes either- i have seen big active confined in beautiful runs but i bet they were never taken for a walk - if you believe the health probs of the breeder - i dont know how theyd manage to walk even one dog let alone the numbers they had all confined in a tiny built up all concrete suburban yard yuk -
my friend had issues with a pup she bought a greyhound cross it was fine but around 12 weeks started dominating her not taking no for an answer she rang a behaviourist and was given a plan it has worked and i have witnessed the training she does and the change inthe dog first she took the dog off her bed and started crating it at night in the bedroom no more privileges any growling on the couch would be met with a firm hauling off the lounge and restricted to the outside lots and lots of walks on lead with food reinforcement helped with establishing a good relationship for a dog who rarely has eye contact this is really good the thing that really made a difference was the feeding time my friend trained the dog at 7months to lie down and wait for the food keeping eye contact all the time and ignoring the food til a signal was given the dog now goes to lie down without any signal and waits patiently i do this with my dogs too she continually touched the food and would pick it up and pretend to feed from it then reward the dog with chicken recall was worked on continually again with chicken this is a typical grey in this respect and she has done wonders cos for the most he will come running even when on a beach now as for the inside he wouldnt settle either so shed feed him then tether him to a heavy couch which became his couch but she would sit close and groom him or do his nails or stroke him for a bit and then reward him if he didnt growl the change is amazing the behaviourist said she had to get going on this training because the dominance could lead to aggression in his case if allowed to go on the dog is now 16mths and it hasnt been easy but the rewards are great she is now working on getting him to totally ignore other dogs when on a lead hes not aggressive but cos of his size she wants him to walk past dogs without getting out of heeling again food works a treat she gets him to watch her by putting the food next to her face and only rewarding him when hes watching her hes becoming far more focussed i saw them during the week and the way hes changed particularly in his bond with her is wonderful even if your dog is different id still be doing the tethering the walking the feeding routine and ignoring any invitation to play until you decide its ok be the boss kind and firm but all on your own terms and the dog will give you the respect good luck

all good info for newbies well done the trouble ive encountered with breeders is that when you go to get a pup most are spoken for and what is left is usually the one pup they have decided to let go it is a business too so you have to be realistic many breeders just want to sell that last pup before hes too old or whatever theres little chance in some breeds to ask the breeder to pick a pup for you cos there are so few left dont know that ive ever had the luxury of choice- \one time there were two pups available and i explained the situation at home but the breeder wasnt helpful we always go to shows to get to know breeders of the breed we like before purchasing

Mandatory Overnight Stay At Vet After Male Desexing?
percyk replied to Jennt's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
no vet in decades of owning dogs has kept a male of mine o/n after desexing bitches have been and my friends also have had the same experience with their dogs and different vets i have mine desexed on a friday morning so i can have the weekend to watch them recover -
i agree with getting up every time pup stirs it will only be a week or ten days before they sleep thru to six providing you toilet at midnight i tie the pup to mywrist ona lead and have them sleep with me the minute they shift i scoop and take to the yard itd only happen round 2 or 3 and it was worth the cold waiting the fewer accidents in the house the fewer bad habits to unlearn the pup can still pee in the crate some will pee near their bed and even on it no problems so just confining isnt the answer if you dont care how long it takes for a pup to be trained the toileting on paper is reckon is better than having him crated there will be inidividuals who learn very quickly and those who take a year

i start walking about 11 days after the 2nd vaccinations not too much exercise until all the knobby bits in the legs grow out

you soon know when a dog is no good in the car so if hes been fine he should stay fine we take all of ours plus kids on long drives up and down the coast sometimese the dogs dont even want to get out - theyre all asleep! we stop every three hours and we dont travel for longer than six hours a day normally but i wouldnt think too much about the dogs in our case - only our fatigue and boredom lol

Puppy Purchasers....taking Your New Puppy Home
percyk replied to ellz's topic in General Dog Discussion
i dont think id need photos - im not so much into the tiny wee puppies but if i got an older dog thatd be nice i suppose hmmm really i dont know cos i have had so many dogs in my lifetime and havent really had to rely on a breeder for anything but the actual pup what about a horoscope? lol are we going to get on? what do the stars say about us? are we compatible? -
re the nail clipping we minded a bugger of a dog once i clipped his nails no problem even though he was a very dominant boy whod growl and carry on when the kids encroached on what he perceived was his space i waited til he was tired and just sat next to him and clipped away\big rhino toes they were and i fully expected trouble but had none\\ most of our own dogs dont like the nails done but accept our leadership no probs so go figure

some breeds are aloof and some individuals within breeds are aloof it is sad when you want a cuddler and you dont get that we had a cav like that very aloof and it was disappointing but that was him and he was beautiful so we had to just accept that he didnt need us very much now we have a mix we have two that love cuddling and put up with just about anything as long as youre touching them one is aloof and you get cuddles only by appointment doesnt matter we are so long into dogs now we just accept each as an individual if you need a snuggler then the next time you look for a puppy ask the breeder to help you choose a cuddlybum
