we have always had multiples and they all react differently we definitely have dogs here that would enjoy being the only dog some breeds i reckon just prefer being the only pooch but our mix works because basically we have different breeds that dont really compete for our attention some aloof types who seldom come up for a pat and others that are glued to your side thats the key i reckon how laidback how possessive and the gender is important to in some cases ours are boys...all desexed and they run together we also have an old desexed bitch and she tolerates everyone to various degrees her favourite shell actually play with and sleep with the others treat her with reverence and pretty well give her space shed prefer to be on her own i think our youngest dog is the one that loves the pack the most and he is the dominant one now and will bow to the old bitch usually he will snap at her if there is food around but only airbite she has a proper go at his feet and is totally unafraid of him all of our dogs never play together they kinda pair off sometimes and thats cute to see them wrestle but someone else joins in theyre ignored or even told off our second oldest dog seems to be the lowliest on the hierarchical ladder and he is easily bossed by all...never snaps ...just accepts his lot and does his own thing when he plays with the old bitch he comes to life and also enjoys a romp with our daughters little dog they all can be trusted to stay together unsupervised but id never leave bones around

fat labs fat cavs just the way of modern suburban life we have never had a fat dog once we had our spaniel stay with a friend and he packed it on but we quickly got him back to a waistline shape lol i only remember seeing two labs in the past few years that have had a good shape...and we did a double take so nice to see dont get why the labs pack it on surely it cant be just overfeeding not every owner gives in to the labs eyes, do they? fat dogs make me feel sad a little less sad than seeing skinny dogs at the pound but still sad when you hear people tell you how much their dog enjoys a sausage or bacon or buttered toast or cheese...its really sad that these owners dont know how many joules theyre packing into their poor animal and how hard it is to get those kilos off

Breed Suggestions For A Child/teenage Owner
percyk replied to Jodi1981's topic in General Dog Discussion
when i was a kid i had a dachshund...a seriosuly devoted intelligent fun dog and companion but id not have one again cos of their build if i had that choice to make id consider the tibetan spaniel..only from what ive read here and shelties a good temperament in a sheltie is a must...i dont know if there are any super shy ones out there anymore but if you get a stable confident dog theyre awesome as companions and the coat is not at all smelly...which is a must for our household at least...the grooming isnt as bad as it looks cos the coat isnt soft but of course there is weekly brushing theyre mini lassies and so pretty i dont mean theyre mini lassies in the literal sense but they just look so easy to handle and stay close to the owners...so easy to train poodles can be fine too..easy dogs but then there is the grooming every 6 weeks dont know about italian greyhounds...to me theyre more an adults dog...theyre not the most fun dogs...theyre lounge lizards and love cuddling but only for warmth not devotion...theyll not follow a kid round the house and if your daughter wants a companion then maybe she should consider something more devoted pomeranians are great little dogs...coat needs work ...but again not as a bad as a maltese that matts very easily...poms will need a good brush every few days and check for knots but otherwise pretty easy cos of the size and very easy to train...very devoted and loving lots of choices...just the luck of picking the actual puppy from the litter....you can go wrong even with the easiest of breeds good luck it is a fun exercise -
wow bit harsh maybe you could say it a different way? being blunt in these situations doesnt help theres been enough trauma no use chucking rotten fruit as well is there? especially from the safety of an anonymous pc educate by all means but be aware of how it is put to people who have just had a scare

a few years ago i was looking on the net for professional urine cleaner and came upon an article which said that biozet was a lot like the urine cleaners the vets use it had enzymes that broke down the three components of urine....two can be broken down by normal cleansers but this third one eluded most attempts cos it is one that is hard to break down but the animals can still smell it ..we cant i wasnt aware that biozet has changed but i havent checked i know it is fabulous to clean up vomit with faeces you have to use cold water first to dissolve the proteins in the poo then warm to dissolve the fat....if you use a warm mix of biozet and water then the protein will set in always drag the stain in on itself and dont rub in a circular fashion cos it wears the carpet fibres blot as you go to get the stain up so use absorbent paper first and stamp hard on it to get as much of the stain up then get to work and rub lightly in an up and down motion then across blotting up with napkins as you go dont overwet dry up the excess by standing firmly with paper towelling underfoot

try a pomeranian i know of one who was trained by the parent but bonded with the daughter cos it slept with her and she played with it...spent the most quality time with it...mother fed it but it still preferred the daughter kid has to be gentle and mature to be able to handle a delicate pom but theyre pretty robust in nature perfect size for the right little girl

you were on my mind last night when i first read your post im so sorry that youre going through this and i cant help but i hope it all works out well for you we will move one day too and we are not in the position to rent first we have to sell and buy within the same period of time with so many pets wed be up the creek so your predicament really struck a chord good luck..hope it is resolved quickly

oh that is so sad i know we just hate reading this stuff any pain a poor animal has to endure is heart-rendering... such terror to go through i am so glad we dont live in these kind of neighbourhoods but we are going to move one day and thats the risk you take ...it isnt just the house youre buying into...it is the whole neighbourhood that is often not on show when you put in your offer people living here dont seem to be attracted to that kind of dog that is likely to hurt another animal ...thank God for that im so sorry to hear your news poor sweet pony at peace now

ive never had an older dog..as in getting one i know plenty who have and been successful there are plenty of sweet older dogs out there but if hes been with a breeder...has he been well socialised or living in kennels? is he toilet trained? was he brought up with kids and all the noises made in a household i once went to visit a place that had pugs pekes and an english bulldog only knew about the pugs ...so it was a shock to find so many dogs there there was no way i could buy one from the lady...they were a weird couple...the dogs lived in the shed and were treated pretty roughly... the pekes had eye problems and had never been on a lead... i think they just had them for prestige.. the dogs were unaccustomed to too much human contact the english bulldog bitch was a truck of a girl and was impossible to walk on a lead..far too heavy and wouldnt budge...i wasnt prepared to put in the time to rehabilitate her cos our kids were young that was my only experience and it turned me off..but now many years later id consider getting and older dog provided it had no real psychological problems i love puppies the mess and the destruction is a pain but watching them grow and form into the dogs theyre to become is beautiful good luck...be careful and dont make a decision without a great deal of thought...weigh it all up...and maybe ask for a two trial

Help Please! Problems With Going On A Walk
percyk replied to Alison Ma's topic in General Dog Discussion
do lots of practice with treats or toys ...do this at home down a corridor or just up and down the room she has to understand what you want she has too many distractions outside but she still gets to walk in the old days we were told a puppy shouldnt go for a walk til it knew how to heel...any excitement...you head right back... teach lola sit and stay and drop keep at it get that eye contact going ...so this means bigtime favourite treats chicken...bbq is really good for those early days dont feed before a walk so she is eager to work for you if she is big and strong then it is best to get a trainer before she hurts you...pulls your arm whatever.. best of luck and dont give up -
ive heard really good things about samoyeds good with people good with dogs id not get one cos of the fur but those smiles are irresistible borzois ilove but theyre not really a companion dog kinda lounge around doing their own thing

nice thread and i loved reading Gelly's story! OH always walks one of our more pathetic looking little dogs he is a tall strong guy and really hed look more balanced witha big dog this dog loves OH and hes so gentle with him our oldest son is really good with all of our dogs hes been out of the picture a bit cos hes witha girlfriend but we love watching him getting down on the floor and greeting all the dogs we have acquired since he's semi-left the household guys and dogs...theres something really nice about that combo

nice to hear it ellz but i have never had a breeder follow up on anything nor be that interested in my circumstances they all were from clubs and some very well known sorry but id still get plane train or automobile and see the litter in my experience the dollar has spoken well and truly before any judgement couldve been made about me and my family... i have never got the feeling that the breeders were really interested in placing a particular dog with us...when questioned the answer was along the lines of 'oh theyre all lovely'...most times thered be only one left anyway...take it or leave it

this reminds me of a time a time that ended in heartache and bad feelings all round we were going to buy a pup...a small breed went to see the breeder who was very well known in the club... ok...we get to the establishment which looked great and we had choice of two litters we opted for a desired colour as you do lol even though the first litter we saw had a delightful mum and tiny pups the next litter in the next room was pretty but the mum went for my daughter...out of protection i suppose but it was enough to make an impression on me but you know how it is...its puppy time and the excitement and impatience get in the way we went back several weeks to collect our little girl pup and promptly returned her within two weeks she was just strange she was supposedly from good stock...friendly and well balanced but she turned out be a loner...preferring the company of dogs to humans we tried with her...but in the end she was growling and snapping at the tender age of about ten weeks and she wasnt fit to be a childs pet in my opinion the breeder reluctantly refunded us the money and the wife was extremely rude saying tha we probably had mistreated the pup, hit it or something this assailed my senses totally cos we had talked on the phone several times before going up to visit and also i had brought my own delightful cocker for them to meet tears for me...anger from them it was awful but i would never buy a puppy if i couldnt see the bitch with the puppies... it may have been a one off unlucky incident but it still leaves a sad memory of a sale gone wrong the fact that the guy was so well known added to the hurt

personally id never buy a puppy sight unseen i have bought two ragdoll kittens online and they arrived safely and were fine the 2nd one was not the kitten we thought we were getting..no way were his markings as good as the ones advertised but as a pet he turned out fine...beautiful really with a dog...nope...too much to consider in temperament i have to go see the breeder to check the kennels anyway...and to see at least the mum but if you have no chance id honestly get a cheap flight up and put the legwork into getting to see the breeder before committing photos can be deceptive and with jap spitzes looking the same colour wise you wont know what pup youre getting anyway///you have to go play and check the pup out yourself... if it is for the showring then maybe you could depend on the breeder...you know, to guarantee the quality but with a pet...the temperament of a companion dog is so important good luck dont plunge into anything theyre good little dogs so you should be able to get one if you pal-ed up with someone ...maybe they could go check out the litter for you? ive done that before for a friend
-
oh thats a nice story and i so hope this true love remains true for all your years my OH is like that he has allergies to animals yet he has never stopped me from adding to our menagerie when we talk of moving he always includes the animals and their needs in our plans at first it was scary for me to believe that he would go along with it all....not with the sensitivity to fur ( which has improved a lot over the years) but when you find a guy who loves you so much that he makes real sacrifices like yours...hes a keeper good on him!
-
all our dogs wear harnesses when travelling of course and we seldom take them off for short stops like a run on the beach...even our weeny dog is fine in the harness with the big strap... i dont think it bothers him at all i prefer that one...the thinner harness straps are harder to get on i reckon and dont lie as flat

Purebred Is Best But What About Other Pets?
percyk replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
im a cat person and keep birds too feel the same about backyard breeders and crossbreeding my cats are purebred and i dont support hybrid bird breeding...like crossing galahs with corellas etc dont like when people breed budgies indiscrimantly the same passion we have about dogs here exists in the other animal forums....good practice and no breeding for the sake of it -
im sorry you had to have that experience and im so glad it came good awful for you thanks so much for posting you write so well i think youll get your message across to many people well done...turning a horrid experience into a lesson that may help others to think ahead and not assume

Relatively New To Dog Ownership...
percyk replied to PrincessCharming's topic in General Dog Discussion
be careful getting a dog during a period of your life when change is most likely to occur or at least disruption to routine so many things to consider...but particularly a stable home for your new dog go ahead as long as you have back up i had to go work in the NT and had to leave my dogs back with my dad who was a dog lover another time once married i had to leave my dog with my dad again cos we were building our house and renting so...plan it all out in that regard as far as breeds go go for the bigger breeds and scale down as you grow older and feeble lol thats my plan anyway
