  4. How's your girl Hilary ? sending good wishes for a lovely litter fifi
  5. Hopefully a seroma & not hernia. I would have her on AB's too. quite a few vets will put them on AB's as a matter of course after a surgical AI. I think vets a divided on the merits of this. hope all is well :-) fifi
  6. I would be taking her in to see the vet for that swelling. there shouldn't be any swelling after a surgical AI, apart from the incision site, with the very occasional bitch having a localised reaction to suture material or a seroma. fifi
  7. Thank you for all the results Sway :-) did you have a roving reporter this time ? fifi
  8. quote: How many straws do you usually get from 1 breeding? It depends on if it was straws or pelletts ? 3-5 straws are usually considered one breeding, or a vial of pellets. Even though the surgical implant is done only once, the semen is deposited directly into the uterus, giving it a very high chance of fertilising. fifi ETA: you might find this article useful: http://www.matamatavets.co.nz/files/files/...icle%202009.pdf
  9. Thanks Sway, looking foward to the IW results tomorrow. fifi

  15. I have that book too :-) good score MM, I think mine was an ex library copy too. The wolfhounds in there are behind quite a few modern dogs. some of the breed are quite different now. fifi

  18. thanks for that hesup, I have a pair of footjoys I bought on ebay really cheaply, just couldn't remember the brand name. (and didn't have the energy to go and look in the showbox !!) fifi
  19. For many, competition is not the issue, its the misuse of their lines & less than ideal breeding practices of some. fifi
  20. leather, did you say leather! An animal died just so you could use it's hide to lead another animal around on. Shame Fifi, shame. Now, now, all my leather died of old age but I am a vegetarian, so hopefully my good lifetime of vegie karma will cut me some slack on my leather leads, shoes and favourite jacket !! fifi
  21. Agree with Sway, my youngsters start on wide webbing check collars and leather slip leads. fifi
  22. Yes, they slide more smoothly than larger link chains :-) sorry to go OT Megs, I think one of mine might be Prestige brand. the others were from show buses over here, and I've always bought them in the hight price bracket as the cheapies have a spot weld in the end rings that is a very weak point. Mrs RB, I'm a vet nurse, and have seen tracheal damage done to two dogs over many years, and both were inexperienced owners with a strong breed and no idea how to safely use the check chains. (they just let the dogs strain in them for long periods without releasing pressure) I've seen more damage done to working dogs left chained on leather leads at their kennel & on utes. fifi edited for clarity
  23. Mrs Rustybucket, you are obviously relying on google and heresay. My dogs are anything from 55-75kg, I show them on snake chains that are the width of a shoelace, snake chains DO break, they are not meant to hold weight, two of my best snake chains I've had for ten years....can you imagine them lasting if we strangled, beheaded, garrotted ect. the dogs with them ??! I have mine on a webbing or walking check collar until we are ready to go into the ring, then I swap over. Mostly because mine get quite excited & happy to see their show mates & owners at ringside !! why don't you actually visit a show & see for yourself there are no headless dogs in the ring, no pools of blood in marshalling areas. fifi edited to add; you mentioned the DA dog at training, it probably should have been in a halti or something that wouldn't cause injury to the dog & handler. You don't show dogs that are going to do that in the ring. (well 99.9999 % don't !!!)
  24. mrs rustybucket, fine jewellers chains & snake chains are for the show ring only, they are very rarely even tightened, they are for looks and only on well trained dogs. I have used full size check chains on my dogs as had my parents with danes for as long as we can remember. Its HOW they are used that's important. fifi
  25. Forgot to add, along with my Rivers and a pair of sketchers, I have a pair of ladies touch football shoes, they look like runners but have BIG rubber knobs on the soles, have saved my skin in wet conditions a few times. I've seen a couple of junior handler girls with soccer boots, the runner style one's. fifi
