Yes, but your dog can MOVE Bartok, she is not virtually a caterpillar who couldn't remove herself from drowning in her own water bowl. BIG difference in total lack of real mobility vs limited lifespan / limited lifestyle. fifi

Semen Transport Within Australia & International
fifi replied to Rottsup's topic in Breeders Community
thank you for that, fantastic to know. I was quoted in many, many hundreds to bring frozen semen from Brisbane to only an hour south of the QLD border !!!! fifi -
I've seen bitches just leave a sickly or 'different' pup away from the nest to let them perish, but never seen a bitch actively kill a disabled pup. as a vet nurse have seen the result of a bitch maiming & killing pups if she feels threatened or stressed. fifi

Exactley, and for the people who think they should be kept alive, I wonder how you'd feel to find one of these pups drowned in its own even shallow, water bowl because it could'nt manouver or push its upper body back out ? fifi edited for terrible spelling

Thank you Julie, I was just trying to compose something along these lines. Liath, I am mortified by what you could think would motivate an ethical breeder or rescuer to euthenase badly disabled puppies You have obviously never stood beside a breeder at the vets, at two in the morning while you and the vet weep over a puppy you've helped birth - as you hold it's little body to your chest for it's last heartbeat. Making this decision, Knowing that it's future would have been one of no mobility, pain and increasing degeneration of its useful limbs, even in the most proactive and loving of homes. How sad that you think the financial side would be a motivator. The puppies in this thread will get to a few years old, and their owners will be faced with the sad reality of the hindlimb & spinal strain, and possibly years of medications, finally being too much for their little bodies to cope with. Where will the rescue that passed them on be at that time :D fifi

I'd be contacting the pug club in her state, they may have a rescue/foster person to assist. fifi

Just keep up her fluids & meds and keep her quiet and confined (crate would be best) If she becomes 'flat' or more lethargic, or there is bloody diarheah(sp) then I would get the vet to admit her and put her on IV fluids. don't panic, most recover well, its getting it early and ensuring hydration and meds are consistent. fifi I am surprised the vet didn't admit her for IV as a precaution, vet must be confident that its very mild & caught early.

If only female genitalia were visible, then there's no way the breeder could have picked it up. You dog would have had health checks done at puppy vaccinations, and if even the vet didn't detect it then, then the breeder hasn't done the wrong thing. There are so many differering degrees of Hermaphrodite. and its generally considered a congenital defect, that is just one of those things that occur in foetal development stage. Unless there was a known defect in the line. I've only seen three in many years of vet nursing. Have you been in contact with the breeder to discuss ? fifi fifi

I would use lectade - comes in a sachet of powder. One sachet per 2litres water. fifi

Glad you've been to the vets, and caught this early as HGE can be VERY serious. keep up the meds and absolute rest. Did the vet recommend some electrolyte supplement in her water ? fifi
-
If she has eaten more than her usual RMB, there's a fair chance its become dry & chalky and wont pass. I agree with Pers, I wouldn't be giving her any oils until the vet has checked its not a blockage and determines treatment from there. fifi

yeah, the little handbag dog that never needs walking or real dog stuff. :D fifi

puppy sniffer, I can see what you are saying. But I work as a vet nurse and see these cases as their lives progress, I have no trouble seeing deaf dogs go to well prepared homes who understand their needs, but I see the burden of disabled dogs on their owners - both financially and emotionally, so while my heart and soul may weep, I still stand by what I said. I have been in rescue for a long time too, not large scale like many here, but enough to be realisitc. The ranger brings us many perfectly healthy dogs to euth each month, we try very hard to find homes for what we can. And yes - I have had a malformed pup born and made the decision to euth on the spot. I cried for days. fifi

I'd love to see how fast the arspca would have my guts for garters, there'd be no nice media...awwww....look at those cute poor puppy stuff, it would be go for the throat have that breeder charged. fifi

Sorry, PTS would be my response. Enough healthy dogs looking for homes without putting some out there that are going to need expensive equipment and ongoing assistance just to have mobility. If I as a registered breeder had a litter like that, I would do the heartbreaking but responible thing and Euthenase them. Of course if I tried to sell them to people, I would be condemned as a cruel and irresponsible breeder !!! two sets of rules :-( fifi

thank you Becks :-) one day I will get there. Are you showing at Crufts this year ? fifi

Ch Kimberley Replacement and Maringa Mardi Gras are the only two Collie Roughs. fifi

thank you for the update Hilary. A litter would be a bonus, but having Macey fully recovered will be such a relief for you. fifi
-
sorry Pers, I didn't know you meant why - as in why its implanted surgically, I thought you meant why - as in why we use frozen semen !!! fifi
-
Having net problems. Yes, a natural birth is expected after AI. although in giant breeds if a scan shows a singleton after AI or natural, some may do an elective ceasar as one is sometimes not enough for hormone levels to stimulate full labour. with modern AI's, litter sizes are average to hight than average depending on the semen quality and all being well with the bitch. Being so far away in the world, frozen semen enables us to use dogs overeas without the stress, distance and risk of importing a puppy. fifi

Thread here: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=204746 good info here: http://www.matamatavets.co.nz/files/files/...icle%202009.pdf A great way to use great dogs over generations, to overcome distance both within & outside oz, maintain lines. fifi
