  1. congrats to the new mums :-) and so sorry Cazzie to read about your losses :-( I've not been in this thread very often. And congrats to all the expectant families too. fifi
  2. With my breed, amputation is one of my 'lines in the sand', I just don't go there. And if a wolfhound needed amputation, its usually osteosarcoma and besides the logistics & pain of a giant dog missing 'one corner', I've never heard of one coping well or living much longer anyway. I know little dogs cope quite well, medium dogs - some do, some don't. fifi
  3. We use giant crates for quiet time training, and we NEVER, EVER, EVER tie dogs up. I used to stake mine out at shows many years ago, but now only ever use crates or our van. Seen to many tie up accidents. Ours all learn that giant crates are a den, and especially when they are youngsters learn that there are treats and soft blankets to enjoy, while we can safely get stuff done around the house. fifi
  4. I'm so sorry Phoebe's time came so soon Kirty A selfless act of bravery that hurts like hell. many hugs from our family to yours fifi xxxxxxx
  5. Well done Julie on getting the ball rolling, ensuring it was sent safely to Jed, and all the creative people who were involved. What an awesome gift to treasure. Just saw the pics of the whole quilt on a previous page ! WOW !! amazing how all the different styles & colours come together so beautifully. I also shed a tear when I saw that our very own Norskgra was involved in the thread. What an amazing bunch of people :-))) fifi
  6. Some bitches go 'off' if they are stressed, so I'd only be boarding for the main couple of days where she is nearly ready, unless she is a very laid back kind of girl or used to boarding. Myself and many people I know have that length of drive, its just part of the 'charm' of breeding, makes breeders extra 'special' !!! (our own yellow bus kind of special !!!!) fifi edited for spelling !
  7. Well done to the winner :-)) Great idea to engage everyone like this Sway, was lots of fun !!! fifi
  8. Its not just the spike they are looking for, a good repro vet will want to chart the upward 'curve' to ensure correct timing. We normally test on day two to establish a baseline, then about days five, seven, nine, and daily from there. Frozen semen needs a much more accurate result - some repro vets will have the bitch stay 'in house' and test twice daily once they bitch starts to climb steadily in her bloods. and will do the AI at exactly the right time. fifi
  9. Maybe ask to have this moved to the breeders section ? It depends on who you use and if you are sharing a cannister for price. fifi

  21. Oh, and back to the topic, yes - the quote sounded way over what I'd consider normal pricing. fifi
  22. The ace/meth combo would have been the pre-med Erny, and then they would have used an IV induction agent, such as we've been desribing here, then onto gas (Isoflurethane usually) fifi
  23. Thanks Pippa, beat me to it. Thio is also a very signifcant danger to sighthounds because it's a barbituate and the amount given according to weight is far too much for sighthound to metabolise. In the past we did see some horrific tissue necrosis with thio. As well as very scary prolonged recoveries. I had to take one of my wolfhounds to a locum a couple of years ago and nearly died when I saw him draw up thio :-o of course he wasn't allowed near my dog with it. I'm genuinely shocked that some vets still use it. fifi efs
  24. All our speys are put on IV fluids, its included in our spey price. and OMG, I thought Thio was long gone !!! thankfully I have not seen it in many years :-) we offer in house bloods in an older or higher risk patient, and really recommend a full blood profile in aged and high risk patients - and discuss when they make the appointment. fifi
  25. Deerhound puppies do look pretty special when they go through the 'joey' phase !!! I'll try a wolfhound or two.....
