At what age does a pup start losing baby teeth and get their adult teeth? My Chi is just over 4 months old and is chewing everything. Sticks, stones, slippers, toys anything. She has a chicken neck for breakfast and just loves chomping on it. Goes in no time. Would appreciate information. Moggy

UPDATE....UPDATE! Well, all was going well when we picked up her poo straight away, but now sometimes she leaves it and other times she will turn around and try to eat it again. We say "NO" and she comes away, but we are not always with her when she does it in the daytime. Pineapple was mentioned. I bought a tin and pureed it and put about 1 teaspoonful in her food. Sat back and waited, but she tried to eat it again. Obviously the pineapple doesn't work for her. Oh well, will just have to keep watching her whenever we can I suppose. Hopefully she will grow out of it as suggested. Any other suggestions?? Moggy

When do you give your dog his/her main meal of the day? Is it better to give it in the morning or evening? We have 2 Chihuahuas, 3 years old and 4 months old. I have been giving them a chicken neck for breakfast, a small amount of dry food to nibble on during the day and their main meal.... mince, rice, peas and grated carrot stew at around 5 pm. If they are VERY good they get a little icecream for dessert. Moggy

Had the same problem with Tictac the other week. Pooing rocks! Rang the vet and was advised to give him some parafin oil. Worked like a charm. Tictac is a Chihuahua and gave him about 5 mls. Would have to be adjusted for the size of the dog. Hope it works. Moggy

I sympathise with you Eldoop. We have a 4 month old Chihuahua and find the evenings the hardest time of the day for accidents. We put her out when we get up in the morning and she goes, then she has her brekky and as we have a doggy door we keep watch and she goes out and wees by herself.....BUT, when it comes to evening my husband keeps her on his knee while watching tele. If she gets off and plays with our other Chi she will squat anywhere, only a little bit mind you as she is a Chi (thank heavens). She goes out before we go to bed and then sleeps through the night. She sleeps with us so we were very anxious at the beginning, but has never done anything in the bed. We keep her confined to the laundry, kitchen/dining area during the day as there is no carpet on the floor. I consider we are half way successful with her training and we have only had her for 3 1/2 weeks. It has been raining overnight and this morning and neither of them will go out on the grass to go. I understand this is a common problem though with a lot of dogs. Moggy

We had a German Sheperd many years ago who used to pull things off the line. There will probably be cries of outrage on DOL when I tell you the method told to us. Hang an old towel or piece of sheet on the line. When you see your dog dragging at it, go out and show him you are not pleased. Take the article and tie it round his neck. Leave it there for a few hours. It will drive the dog mad trying to get if off. He will hate it. But it cured our dog. He stayed right away from the clothes line and never touched anything on it again.

Can someone give me some tips on teaching my Chihuahua to sit? Would appreciate advice thank you. Moggy

Our 4 month old puppy makes little "yips" in her sleep sometimes. It doesn't wake her up but it amuses us. Maybe your pup will outgrow this behaviour but sorry can't offer any advice on stopping it.

Problem solved. We removed her poo immediately for a few days and then tested her out. She went and just ran away so I think she has lost interest now. Thanks for all your advice.

Sophie is 4 months old and we are still persevering with the toilet training. For some reason she only wees on the carpet inside. We are taking her out and she does wees and poos and we praise her. She has never weed on our vinyl and tiled floors, BUT if she gets anywhere on the carpet she wees. So we have the lounge room and bedrooms baracaded during the day and in the evening she sits with us in the lounge so we can watch her. Usually she sleeps all evening on my husbands knee. She sleeps with us at night and has never had an accident in bed. She sleeps through and we take her out in the morning. No problem there. I was prompted to write this post when my husband and I were in the study (carpeted) for about 3 minutes and when we turned to go out, here is a little puddle on the carpet. Grrrrrrrrr! Does she have a carpet fetish?????? lol Moggy

"I would scrap the rice and vegies. Dogs cannot digest the vegies anyway and we now know that grains such as rice arent that great for dogs and can cause problems." One of our dogs was not well and taken to the vet. The vet suggested a very bland diet was best, cooked mince, rice, grated carrot and peas. We have been feeding this and his is fine. Our pup is also eating this cooked mixture and with no problems and we have to clean up her poo immediately as she is inclined to eat it. There are no undigested veges or rice in the stools. Here I am freaking out trying to find a good diet for my dogs. I think I will stick to what I consider is right. 1/2 weebix and warm milk for brekky. A little Royal Canin in a bowl for snacks, although I finish up throwing it out as they rarely touch it. Cooked mince, rice, peas and grated carrot for tea. Also 1 egg (between the two of them) in their tea once a week. A couple of chicken necks a couple of times a week, and they love a meaty bone once a week. They are two very healthy Chihuahuas. Footnote. I was talking to a 93 year old lady in an aged care home and she was telling me about a foxy her daughter had eons ago. He lived to 19 years and never went to a vet and never ate dog food. He ate what they ate. I think this speaks for itself. Thanks to you all for your input. Moggy

I am a bit suspicious about it. There are red specks in it, like there might be offal minced in. I will wait and see if they eat it and then how it affects them. If there are any problems, the rest will be going into the bin.

I bought some chicken mince for pets today from Leonards, after reading lots of recommendations from other posts in DOL. I cooked up some brown rice, peas and grated carrot, cooled the mixture down then added the raw chicken mince. I will try it on my Chis tonight, but boy I wouldn't eat it. lol. The mince smells vile. I also got some chicken necks to try at a later stage. Still experimenting with different foods to see which ones they really like. Am I doing the right thing? Moggy

What My Vet Told Me...
moggy replied to Roxy_and_Missys_Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am getting very confused with the whole subject of what to feed your dog. My son's dog had blood in his faeces and was very sick. The vet told them to feed him a very bland diet, mince, rice, peas and grated carrot boiled together. He is doing very well on it. I have just got a pup and he loves this meat/rice recipe. I have bought some Royal Canin, Goodos and Science Diet treat bones. At first they loved the Royal Canin, but after 2 days just sniffed at it and walked away. Goodos were a real treat for a couple of days too, but the novelty wore off. BUT each day when they had their mince/rice recipe they lap it up. Also I give them 1/2 weetbix with warm milk in the morning. Again this is quickly lapped up. They are very healthy and lively. As I said I am very confused. -
Sophie is going great with her toilet training, only had a few mishaps. BUT yesterday my husband took her out and she did her poos and then turned around sniffing it and attempted to eat it......YUK. I know dogs do this sometimes, but how can we discourage her from this activity. Moggy.

Well I whisked an egg and mixed it with their food and they both loved it. (One egg between both of them.) Will be giving them one each week now. Not sure about the shell though. Will try that later on.

In a previous post I explained the breeder gave me a puppy pack with Optimum puppy food and said she feeds all her dogs with this product along with some doggy sausage. Sophie nibbles at it but doesn't seem very enthusiastic. Tictac, who is 3 years old, is being fed cooked mince, carrot, peas and rice. The vet suggested this diet along with meaty bone each week and chicken necks. Sophie, new pup, just loves the cooked mixture and gobbles it down with gusto. I hope this diet is ok for her. What do others think. Sorry I am posting quite a bit on this subject, but I want to get it right. Moggy.

I have been told eggs are good for a dog's coat and health. I vaguely remember in another lifetime when I had a Chihuahua we used to give him an egg whisked in milk every now and then. He used to love it. We have 2 Chis at the moment and wondered if we could give them the "egg flip" once a week or so. Any comments?? Moggy.

Finally we have our new puppy, Sophie, a long coat Chihuahua. She is 3 1/2 months old and just gorgeous. The breeder recommended Optimum puppy food for her. She feeds it to all her dogs and has never had a problem. After weeks of perusing this forum and wondering which food to use I have decided to take her advice. Does anyone else use Optimum? We will also give her meaty bones and chicken necks as well. Moggy.

Years ago we had a German Shepherd not desexed. He was about 4 years old when we bought a 10 week long coat Chihuahua. My husband was very worried the Chi would be a very expensive meal for the GS. We were very nervous and introduced the pup to the adult dog. There was never a problem and the GS absolutely loved the pup. We used to watch the pup hanging by the teeth off the jowels of GS. He used to lay down so the pup could jump all over him. I think adult dogs know the puppies are babies, just like humans. BUT it probably does depend on the nature of the dogs involved. We are actually bringing home a Chihuahua pup tomorrow and she will have to live with our sons 3 year old Chihuahua we are "boarding" for 12 months while he is building a house. I just hope they get along together as well as our German Shepherd and Chihuahua did all those years ago. Moggy

That is so cute. I feel tired just watching them. Moggy

What is the best product to clean up puppies little accidents? We have an older dog who is very clean and uses a doggy door 24 hours a day. When we get our pup, 3 months old, in a couple of weeks there is no doubt she will have accidents. I need something which will completely get rid of the odour so the older dog won't become confused and think he can do it inside too. I am hoping the pup will follow the older dog and eventually use the doggy door too. Suggestion would be very helpful. Moggy.

The Best Shampoo To Retain Beautiful Long Coat
moggy replied to MaddieMoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There seems to be a lot of different opinions on how often to bath dogs. We are getting our pup this month and I have been perusing all the information on this topic. Most have suggested monthly bathing and only with a good soap free dog shampoo. The above quote seems to contradict this finding. Years ago I had a Chihuahua and he was bathed weekly with "people" shampoo, blow dried and brushed with baby powder. He used to love this. He never had a skin problem and his coat was always soft and silky. I would imagine Showdog has gorgeous healthy dogs and the human shampoo and weekly baths have not harmed them. Moggy. -
Been surfing the pet supply sites and came across a product called "Timid Joe Dog Soap". Supposed to be around for a long time and very effective. Has anyone heard of or used this item?

Thank you all for your advice. We will probably bath her every 4 weeks then. It is just that I know she will be sleeping with us, we had a Chi years ago and this is what happens as other Chi owners would know, and naturally would like to keep her clean. Thinking of getting Fidos Everyday Soap Free shampoo. Our gorgeous little Chi we had 25 years ago used to love his weekly bath and blow dry and never had any skin problems. We will take her to the vet when we get her and ask him about flea control. Thanks again. Can't wait to bring her home. Moggy
