When I phoned for an appointment the girl did mention an eye specialist who visits this hospital but said I would have to see the vet first. When I took Sophie to him he did not mention the eye specialist so I just thought he knew what he was doing.

Sophie has very bad tear stains and I have tried EVERYTHING to cure them. So it was off to the vet today for investigation. He put some dye into her eyes which was supposed to turn green and come out her nose if the ducts were okay. Nothing. So the next step is for her to have a little op on Thursday morning where she will be put under a mild anaesthetic so he can examine the ducts, or lack of. Has anyone else had this procedure done on their dog? He is not promising it will be a success but at least we will know if the ducts are okay.

I have been mixing mince steak, chicken necks (cut into 1/2 inch pieces) veges and eggs mixed together and frozen in small portions for Sophie. She is doing very well on it but wonder if I should give her some dry food as well. Will look for Great Barko, Uncle Albers or Natures Gift tomorrow. Are they all sold in supermarkets?

Sophie used to eat her poo and we tried everything, but nothing worked. As she got older, she is 16 months now, she slowly stopped the habit. We tried all sorts of expensive dry food and pineapple and Thrive D to no avail. But sometimes she brings a bit up and puts it on the back door mat. We think she is showing us we missed picking it up as my husband goes out every morning and cleans it up. Now I just feed her a raw diet. Beef mince, chopped chicken necks, doggy sausage and eggs all mixed together and freeze it in batches. She loves it and is very healthy.

Well, after months of agonising over what to feed Sophie, I have decided to make up my own recipe. Raw mince beef, chicken necks, some cubed doggy sausage and eggs. I mix it all together and freeze it in small containers and she just loves it. I then know she is getting raw red meat, chicken bones which help clean her teeth and eggs which are good for her coat and doggy sausage for variety. She is very happy and healthy.

I give Sophie Purina "Lucky Dog" Chewy Sticks. They are not white, more a biscuit colour so hope they are okay. The box is the same as the one in the previous post but instead of "crunchy" it says "chewy".

I feed Sophie, longcoat Chi, a rawhide stick every second day. She loves them and sits and chews them for ages. I have just read this post. What is the danger? Is it choking? She seems to digest them as her stools are normal. Are they bad nutritionally? I did a search on DOL but didn't come up with anything conclusive. More information please?

Sophie was eating her poo and we tried lots of things. Changed her diet, put chilli powder on it, fed her pineapple in her food, cleaned it up as soon as possible, growled at her etc. etc. but nothing seemed to work. Then for a few weeks she would bring a bit up in the evening and put it on the back door mat. But hopefully we think she has grown out of it, she is 13 months old. We haven't had any "presents" left on the mat for a couple of weeks now and my husband always finds poos to clean up each morning in the yard. We are keeping our fingers crossed. And yes, DON'T LET YOU DOG KISS YOU!!!! LOL

Thank you very much Bellsmum. I have one home remedy to try after the Kojo. Equal parts of Boracic acid and cornflour, add water to make a paste. Apply to stains. When dry, brush off. Only thing that worries me about this method is the instructions 'DO NOT ALLOW TO GO INTO EYES".

Sophie has tear stains and I have tried EVERYTHING mentioned in the above posts. I have been cleaning her eyes with Kojo eye conditioner at the moment. Been using it for about 2 months but the stains won't go away. They are not as bad, but still there. I am convinced there is nothing that will get rid of them. It is more noticeable on white dogs. I just clean her eyes everyday so they don't get worse. Good luck!!

Well after lots of reading on DOL and changing my Chihuahua's diet a few times and worrying whether she is getting the best blah....blah....blah I have come to the conclusion I will feed her a bit of everything. I cook up mince with a little garlic, add some rice, grated carrot, beef cubes and water and cook up a lovely doggy stew. I let this cool and add beaten egg and raw chicken carcass mince. Mix it all well. Freeze it in serving size quantities. When I serve it up to her I heat in microwave, just to warm it, and add some good quality dry food. She also gets some meaty bones a couple of days a week. She loves her food and is very healthy and happy. I often think of a Chihuahua we had years ago who just about lived on Goodos (horror of horrors) and he lived till 15 1/2 and apart from his puppy needles, never visited a vet. He was always happy and healthy.

A friend bought a puppy from the Animal Welfare and she was desexed before coming home....at 8 weeks. I consider this to be very young. My vet wouldn't desex Sophie until she was 6 months old.

Are Brisket Bones And Lamb Flaps The Same Thing?
moggy replied to MissMolly's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It has been mentioned too much fat is not good for dogs. In my opinion lamb flaps are VERY fatty. My Chihuahua is not too fat but she is not thin either. Surely she would put more weight on if she was to be given lamb flaps? -
What about the no bark collar which emits a sound only the dog can hear. Apparently they don't like the sound and stop barking. Are they all right to use or are they the illegal ones.

Persephone, she has just turned 1 year old and we have had her for 9 months. She is a Chihuahua (picture left and below) and is a house dog. She gets lots of chasing the ball exercise every day, her favourite thing. She doesn't get obedience training every day, but is quite well behaved. And she is calm in other ways in house and yard. She loves going for a walk on her lead. We are mainly concerned about the barking in the back yard apparently for nothing. At least we can't hear or see anything. She doesn't bark non stop, just for about 30 seconds.
-
Sophie seems to be barking more lately. She barks at people passing by the window, barks at animals when they appear on the tele and more annoying is she runs out the back yard and just barks at nothing!!! Luckily she only barks during the day. Is there anything we can do to curb this behaviour. We say a firm "NO" but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I have heard of collars which spray something into their face but are they legal in Victoria? Advice please.

Since feeding Evo to Sophie her coat has become so thick and silky. I don't need any supplements as all the nutrients are included. I am very happy with it and she loves it.

Hi Ah Ngau, Sophie is 12 months old and still eats her poo. Not all the time, but sometimes. We have tried everything. Picking it up as soon as we see it, adding pineapple, pumpkin and Thrive D to her food. We fed her for a while on a raw diet, cooked diet with rice and she still persists with the bad habit. Talking a couple of weeks ago to a man who has handled dogs for years and says he has written articles on the subject, he said dogs eat their own poo because they are not getting a balanced diet. Thus he suggested Evo so we are giving it a try. We haven't seen her eating her poo but she still carries it to the back door mat (we watch our step carefully) and it is much smaller than previously. We are lucky she will eat anything and it doesn't seem to affect her. I would love to return to the fresh diet, mince beef, chicken necks (cut up) egg and sardines, but at the moment we are on a trial with the Evo. It seems to have a fantastic list of ingredients and she likes it. So that is the story. Moggy.
-
Postcript to my last post. She only has 1/4 cup of Evo per day, and seems to be enough to satisfy her. Moggy.
-
I was advised to feed my dog on Evo because she had a copraphagia problem. Apparently the ingredients are all absorbed so there is no "recycling" bits left to tempt her. Also there are no grains and ultra low carbs. This food is 42% crude protein. Now I am worried this will affect her kidneys. I have changed her diet from fresh to tinned and now the Evo. It seems everyone has a negative opinion of which ever food is used. I know she enjoys the Evo and her faeces is much smaller than when she eats the other diets. I am so confused!!!!!!!!!!! Moggy.

Vaccinate,or Not To Vaccinate Yearly.
moggy replied to nicestman77's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We had a Chihuahua years ago who had his puppy needles and the 12 month needle then no more after that and he lived 15 1/2 years with no sickness at all. Now we have Sophie, another Chihuahua who is 11 months and due for her next needles in October. I don't think she needs yearly vacs, but what if I want to kennel her at any time. Kennels insist on seeing vaccination certificates. I am confused also. Moggy. -
Thank you. They are reconstructing their site so will keep in my favourites and watch it. Moggy.

Hi Shnauzer, I live in Victoria. Do you know where I can purchase it here? Thanks, Moggy.

Hi Melbournecritter I have tried putting pineapple, pumpkin and Thrive D in her food. We have sprinkled pepper or chillie on her faeces, which works but you have to find every bit she does which is hard sometimes. I know it is common for dogs to do this ugh thing, but she brings bits of it inside and that is a definite no-no. She is only 11 months old so there is a chance she might grow out of it. (Fingers crossed.) We will keep trying though. Cheers, Moggy.
