Thanks heaps for the replies everyone, has given me a lot to think about! We've got a couple in Seville, and quite a few in Macclesfield to look at, so fingers crossed we find what we want. I'm hoping for Macclesfield as it's closer to KCC and friends.

Surrogate Mother Possibly Needed In Melbourne

My girls' breeders had a bitch who tried to have a go at hers after a caesar. They sedated her as a last resort and she ended up accepting them. -
Surrogate Mother Possibly Needed In Melbourne

Tried to pm you but you're not receiving any new pms. -
Yeah, price has helped narrow down areas. We have some properties to look at around Seville, Wandin and Macclesfield. Guess I was just hoping to find out how reasonable the councils were? From the sounds of it, Cardinia are quite reasonable. I guess we have to suss out the neighbours before we buy a place too! No point buying one if they're dead against allowing permits for extra dogs, especially if the council refuse an application based on their opinions (although I know they do grant permits even if some neighbours object). From what I can gather they all do a home check, which wouldn't be a problem.

Cool, thanks JulesP. Think I better ring them and ask them what the likelihood of getting a permit is before we buy anything. The other area we are looking at is Kangaroo Ground/ St Andrews area. Who would they come under? Is there anywhere I can just look up to find out what council an area comes under?
-
Great, thanks guys! I have 4 so that won't be a problem. We're looking at around 20 acres. Also have to consider if I get more dogs, but that's not going to happen any time soon. Do Yarra Ranges allow 4 on acreage as well?

I've already found out how many dogs I can have. They all say 2, any more require permits. Guess I'm just hoping to hear from people who have actually applied for permits, and how easy they are to obtain. From what I can gather they'll ask your neighbours, and check where you plan on housing them. It's the approval part that I'm concerned with. I have a friend in Cardinia shire who has a 3 dog permit in a suburban block, so I'm thinking they shouldn't be too much of a problem. I suppose Yarra Ranges is the main one.

My mum and I are currently in the process of buying acreage together, and one thing I have to consider is that I currently have 4 dogs (well one is nearly 2 weeks old, but he still needs to be counted for the future). I'm wondering if people on here can give me an idea of different councils and how easy it is to get permits for extra dogs. The areas we're looking are Gembrook, Packenham Upper and Macclesfield (so I think Cardinia), Seville, Wandin area(which I think falls under Maroondah or Yarra Ranges??? I could be wrong, I don't know the councils in that area very well). So to sum it up, the councils possible could include; Cardinia Yarra Ranges Maroondah Knox How easy is it to get a permit for extra dogs within these different councils? Is there like a "kennel" or breeders permit that can be obtained?

I heard my pup's heart beat when she was around 6-7 weeks in whelp I think, but wasn't easy to hear with digestive noises, etc. Would be easier with more than one though! Once he dropped down at around 8 weeks he was a lot easier to hear. I've got a good quality stethescope as I bought it for uni, and haven't used it for anything but my animals since graduating!

Saw My First South African Boerboel Today!

There is a breeder who has been importing these magnificent dogs on a horse forum I also frequent. They put up a whole thread with pics of their new imports, and they were massive! -
Gorgeous oakeydoak1!!! :D

Gosh everything I was going to suggest you've tried. Probably the only other thing I tried is that I was expressing to stimulate her supply, but you have more babies than me to stimulate her supply. I have the opposite problem now, too much milk and my boy is getting porky.

I can't help with the age to vaccinate, as that's something I'm very interested to hear for my own pup. From a medical background myself, however, I'd think that 36 hours really isn't long enough for the body to create antibodies. Isn't it the pup's body and how quickly they produce antibodies that determine how quickly they're covered for the diseases vaccinated for?

For those that haven't been into the August litter thread, my GSD bitch had a singleton pup last week. If I can, I thought I'd see if I can help someone out with a litter (either orphaned or excessively large) that would otherwise require hand raising to put them on her. Am thinking preferable medium to large breed, similar age (under a week old) for it to work best. I'm in Bendigo, Victoria. My bitch is fed artemis, and the pup/s will most probably fed the same (unless you had a specific objection to this), and I'm on 12 acres, so plenty of room to move here. I also have children available and cats for socialisation. My girl is inside with this baby, and will remain so (with outside time once big enough) for socialisation purposes.

They do look lovely don't they Jackofhearts?? Well my lil guy is going great guns now. Mum's milk is in, so just her milk overnight and up more than 40g in 13 hours! Think we have a piggy on our hands!
-
All you have to do is look at how extremely different 2 different dogs of exactly the same cross are. If they're that different physically, he can also expect a massive different temperament wise as well. A GSD pup goes for around $1,200, and they come with a health guarantee. What about a sable GSD? The colour might be what he likes if he doesn't want the standard black and tan.

There should be laws against breeding dogs with health defects. It is not fair on the pups who usually end up getting PTS. I thought there actually was a newish law about this?? Can't puppy buyers come back and have some sort of recourse if a person breeds a dog with heritable defects?

Yeah that weight loss had me quite worried, but even moreso was the dehydration. I'll now make sure I always have saline and some needles and syringes on hand in future (thank goodness I had the wombaroo). He's looking a lot more pot bellied, and I'm thinking now he's going to turn into a fatty! He's currently snuggled into mum's tummy so all he has to do is wake, suck, go back to sleep! He wasn't all that interested when I gave him some expressed colostrum, and he's now quiet when he feeds so I'd say his tummy is filling up a lot more now. :D

Having moved out to a country town, the amount of work colleagues (who are senior and I try to nicely say something but find it very hard with them being senior) and sometimes patients that I speak to who have bred a litter just cos, or that are looking for a male dog to breed their SWF with. It's just amazing, and they don't see anything wrong with it. One person's bitch has just had yet another litter because it's too hard to keep her male and female separate and she "feels bad" at the idea of taking him to the vet to desex the male (umm, what about the female?? ). Drives me nuts!

Thanks Chocolate. I had a lovely breeder friend who I was on the phone to yesterday morning who gave me some wonderful advice. The lil man has now gained 22g, and looks like mum's milk has come in, so seeing how he goes without a supplement feed for tonight's weight. He's starting to look filled out again, and his tummy looked full after he fed off her last time (plus I was able to get about 4-5ml off her and she now looks full and some are squirting ).
-
Ok, so looking at my little boy this morning, he'd lost more weight (down to 501g, so has lost 114g), and he was clearly dehydrated by his skin. I rang a breeder friend, and she suggested some sugary water and to start supplementing him until her milk comes in. He's had 1ml of the water and 3ml of wombaroo and is a MUCH happier baby now. He's now looking well hydrated again. Going to head into town and get her some fenugrek shortly, and will ring the vet to see if they recommend anything else.
-
So how would you make the decision to supplement feed? My man has lost a little weight, but is active and skin is nice and tight. I'm worried she may not have as much milk as I thought, and it's still colostrum. I'm getting a bit worried waiting for it to come in properly. At the same time, I know of the slippery slope of supply once comp feeds are given, so am very wary of it. ETA- the weight loss is 70g so far. He's active and feeding around 1 1/2 hours, sucking well, etc. At this point thinking I'll wait until morning and see what his weight is doing then.

Great news Sirsniffalot!!! Nice numbers too! :D

That's great to hear Sharon!! :D I hope I'm as lucky as you to get such a special man in a singleton litter. Good point about sirsniffalot. His/her girl was due yesterday like mine. Good luck with yours oakeydoak1.
