Kirty, I have a 13 year old Grey and she is the same and has ALWAYS been the same....skinny and very hard to get weight on. Some Greys are just that way inclined. But if I were you......take her to your Vet to have her checked for any underlying problem such as pancreas problems etc. If she is free of any problems that could be causing her thinness .......then being thin is just her and there is not much you can do. As long as she is healthy looking with a healthy coat. Five cups seems an awful lot....too much imo for a grey. My girl has two heaped cups of a premium dry food (Artemis) and a 1/4 of a tin of Natures Gift mixed in to the dry. She struggles to eat any more than that in one sitting. She does have treats though.... a couple of chicken necks or brisket bone and she loves bread...so she gets a slice every couple of days. She's skinny...but she's healthy looking.

"Perhaps it is a cynical view. But there's so much skulduggery that goes on in government and what seems to be 'deals' between government and super-orgs, that's it is very difficult to be otherwise. I wish I didn't feel this way and saw the world and all who were in it as wonderful all the time. " The thing is people...its happened.....so what are we all going to do about it? What can we do about it?

"Sounds like a shark attack not a dog attack." That's exactly what the woman's neighbours said when they witnessed the attack after they broke in to her house to rescue her. Dreadful thing to happen to anyone......but I fear this will be the "last" straw for the State Govt and ALL dog owners, regardless of breed, will be suffering the consequences of this attack through more and more legislation.

Spottychick, I couldn't have said it better myself ......I thoroughly agree with everything you have said!!

Whippets and Trisven 13 ,I totally agree with you in what you both have said and doG knows why they ARE out to get purebred registered breeders ....when the greater majority of us look after our dogs better than we look after ourselves sometimes. I even heard there was a raid ;) by the rotten RSPCA on a States governing canine body (?)...the RSPCA looking for breeders who 'might' have debarked dogs . If the b*st*rds focused on REAL cruelty cases such as this topics about and stopped hounding good people who take full care of their animals.....we ALL would be better off...including those poor darling dogs left to starve, die of thirst chained up in appalling conditions. The RSPCA is a bloody disgrace IMO and so are the law makers who allow these puppy farms to exist and operate. Doesn't that stupid man Don Burkless have ties to one or two of the puppy farms? I know he FULLY supports them and what they do. Grrrrrrrr.

'building Better Dogs' Seminar 11 Feb 2010
Tapferhund replied to mlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
"This was the one that grabbed my interest the most and it was about testing how stresssed dogs are when they go from a home to a kennel situation. Obviously the focus for this research was on what happens to guide dog candidates which have been in homes with puppy raisers and then have to come back to a kennel situation for their training etc..." I worked in the kennels at Guide Dogs many years ago and in the time I was there (two years) the one thing I noticed was Labradors don't care where they are as long as there is food ! LOL Seriously though........the dogs never stressed or fretted for their puppy walkers and they bonded very quickly to the trainers who trained/handled them...and then to the clients they were finally assigned to. Guide dogs also had a few other breeds training from time to time.....GSD's , a Boxer and Golden Retrievers........and the three of these breeds, particularly the German Shepherds, stressed and fretted BADLY...as they ALWAYS do when in boarding kennels . I have worked in a fair few of these too and there are certain breeds that should never be boarded because of the stresses it places on them. -
Schutzhund In Victoria
Tapferhund replied to SmoothieGirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
"Breed clubs are the ones who will chuck you for being involved in Schutzhund." Nekhbet, Who ever told you that were doing nothing more than opening up their mouth to let the wind blow their tongue around... It's a load of codswallop. -
Schutzhund In Victoria
Tapferhund replied to SmoothieGirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
ANKC regulation that it is not to be done and that any club or person found to be doing it is in breach of the regulations and can be kicked out. Sorry Dracdog, but that's an "urban myth" that has been going around for years and is simply not true. If it were true then there would have been dozens and dozens of WL breeders (GSD) and Dogsport enthusiasts of all Schutzhund breeds who are also VCA/ANKC members thrown out years ago. NEVER HAPPENED and never will. -
Thanks BC :D

C'mon people.........there must be someone from that area or surrounding areas who can recommend good vets???
-
Hi everyone, Can anyone recommend GOOD and experienced Vets in or near Drouin or surrounding suburbs. thanks Taps

Yes , mine are big grass and grass root eaters too. Must be the buffalo grass...cos they love it ! Its perfectly natural ......so whatever you do don't punish him for it Sticks 1997

Lo Pan, If we go by past experiences, I doubt they will take much notice anyway. Typical Govt going through the motions of looking like they are doing the right thing......but in the end will do what THEY want anyway.

I did the ndtf course and loved all of it bar ADT. I thought ADT were an embarrassment and a disgrace ! The majority, NOT ALL, but the majority of Instructors were so puffed up , strutting around too full of their own importance to know anything on how to help dogs or their owners........and very few knew anything about dogs and how to train them. In the time I had to attend I saw situations that were borderline to downright cruelty....ignorant instructors telling ignorant owners what to do with their dogs. So, on this alone I am glad they have gone belly up !

Elbow Dysplasia - Anybody With Experience?
Tapferhund replied to Paws4Thought's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to hear that P4T, There is not a lot you can do other than no hooning or jumping for the dog or anything else considered high impact ...such as ball chasing etc. Swimming is okay though because the water is carrying the dogs body weight. Other than this...you could try various supplements that help the bones and joints etc. -

Due to slight prostate problems , one of my dogs has a "Supralorin" implant and it works really well. It takes about a month before you will notice an improvement and the only side effect is their testicles seem to shrink in size........but they go back to normal withing weeks of the implant wearing off. Supralorin could help your dog but talk to your Vet about it. Also google for info on it.

Grass is part of their 'natural' diet as they do get a certain amount of nutrients out of it. They also eat it for medicinal reasons, ie if they are feeling a bit crook.....as the grass can irritate the side of the throat which causes them to vomit........much the same as if we were to stick our fingers down our throat.

Thanks Jeff Jones !!! Tell me.....is Tarkoo von Zenith one of the pics and if so....which one? Or is there anywhere I can go (site address) to see a photo of this dog?

Nuhh...I wanted to go and was looking forward to the weekend......until I saw all Interstate Judges and in past experiences, trialing under Interstaters, they all tend to make the competitors do the full heeling routines not only in normal pace......but again in fast pace and slow. Normal and slow don't bother me and the amount of fast our Vic judges do in the pattern just suits me fine as I have stuffed knees. There is no way I could cope doing an entire routine in fast pace.......so I saved me money and didn't enter.

Thanks RottnBullies for posting the pics of the Nats , they are really terrific. A couple of questions though......do you know who is who and who won overall? Also...some of those Sheps look enormous.....were they?...or was the helper just a little guy giving the impression that the dogs were huge? Next years Nationals........where are they going to be???

Training In Other Languages
Tapferhund replied to mersonmalinois's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Years ago I did Schutzhund and trained in both English and German commands. I also did and still do ANKC obedience and use one German word (out of habit) for a particular exercise. I only ever had trouble once with a Judge......he was Dutch and picked it up straight away but was nice about it. He told me to be very careful as it is a definite no no for ANKC.....which I think is absolutely ridiculous. IMO ...as long as it is ONE word.....you should be able to use it. I often used to think what if the dog was trained using swear words.....like sh*t for sit and 'bugga' for drop (being polite here lol)....the Judge would have to accept that because after all it IS English....and yet they won't accept another language such as 'sitz' for sit or 'platz' for drop. Go figure ?
