  1. At the end of June Im adding a Cavalier puppy to my crew..an 8 year old Great Dane and an eight month old Staffy. I have no worries as the Dane is gentle yet playful with the little Staffy. Im holding back getting the Cavalier untill hes 10/12 weeks old just to have him a little more robust. I have no worries at all about the Staffy..he loves everyone and was fine with baby puppy we had here for a few days recently. In my view it depends on how you present yourself as leader. Sure there can be outbursts. Only natural..Ive seen large and small breeds coexist happily many times...a lot depends on your confident handling though.....oh and I have an ultra tiny Chi too...nobody crosses her!!!
  2. THinking of Jed and all she has loved and lost. May be gone from her physically but always with her.....
  3. Id like to thank you Mrs Tornsocks for innitiating a very informative thread....Im sure Im not the only one who thinks so...you certainly dont own a rude dog..you do own however....like so many of us..... a young dog who is in the process of learning manners. Disregard the snide remarks from those who arnt able to see the point of all the exchange of views here. No need to apologise. The best and most insightful posts have come from very knowledgable people and contained no negatives. Those who are really knowledgable and effective dog owners can offer advice without self agrandisement and hurtful or belittling remarks. You are very aware that your lovely Lab boy, however endearing, still has a way to go towards well mannered maturity. Same applies to all young dogs walking the earth. 'Lab bashers ' merely show themselves to be ignorant of canine behabviours. All breeds can and do behave badly sometimes. Never owned a Lab..but they have been in my immediate family for 16 years....their behaviour can range from the sublime to the ridiculous....
  4. Oh Horty many hugs to you now....I well remember how quickly it seemed to go when Baron reached this stage....I didnt know you could have the vet come to your home when he died. Doing that would be a continuation of all the preceeding loving things you have done for Kuges. And I do think it would be helpful for his long time companion. It wont be an easy thing to say goodbye...but by making sure everything is familiar and at ease youll know he will be the same. Im thinking of you ....
  5. Everyone is free to choose as they wish..... be it Purebred or Cross.....and really its sometimes pot luck regardless of your dogs origins or background. You can decide on a purebred..do your in depth research on the breed..meet the breeder...or breeders...do everything right and still end up with a dog that out of nowhere develops a deadly disease that kills it in a year or two. Or it develops on going expensive problems that despite all your tender care and thousands of dollers wont be cured. And this from an ethical registered breeder who does all the right things re health testing etc...genetics can be an unpredictable bugger. Then you have your unethical breeders....we have all heard what can happen there...registered too. Then of course your pure bred can be all you hoped for. Your plain old crossbred dog can live a healthy vigorous life with never a problem...or it can suffer like the aforementioned pures. DD breeders are in an evil section unique to their avaricious uncaring attitudes. I would never tar all backyard breeders with the same brush either.....many care for their dogs as well as any so called registered breeder. Ive heard of so many people whove bought a pure bred dog...in my own breed ..only to lose it far too early from something which was not evident when purchased ..and from healthy bloodlines. The opposite of course occurs. My own BYB purebred has had a wonderful run.....I know next to nothing about her background. My old Cross died at nearly 14...only had a few teeth out before old age caught up with him.. So quite often you dont get what you pay for in a pure bred...and cross breed mystery packages live long and behave beautifully. Life is never exactly as you think its going to be. So have what you want..look after your choice as best you can and love what they are regardless.....owning dogs is like a box of chocolates......etc etc.....very often. Ive the greatest respect for registered breeders and their dogs..dont get me wrong..I see the value in that practice....but things can and do go wrong. Ive owned mongrels, purebreds, papered and unpapered, rescues and BYB....over all.... none was better than the other..they were just all loving dogs...just different in their temperaments like any person is in personality.
  6. Well.. Im glad to see all dogs are healthy Rex...my thoughts would be to put a new style of gate that has no footholds for him to climb. Same with any other section of fence or whatever he is climbing..something smooth. Hes not actually jumping anything is he? He is acting driven isnt he..Have to think of something to disrtract him..mightbe deliciious Kongs..you might have to break out the big Kongs when you go out.
  7. For absolute peace of mind a secure run with shelter water and correct flooring is the only way. Have had fence jumpers in the past and the run was the only solution. Oh just saw the concrete dilemmaabove ..what about concrete slabs then? can be removed if necessary.
  8. Yahoo!! Theres three suppliers in my town! Im getting some Thanks JJ....
  9. Can Great Barko/Uncle Albers be got in Sydney?
  10. Ellie youll find a huge range at Petbarn..including all the premium grade kibbles for growing babies. plus everything Ellie Maes heart could desire re toys and bedding. have fun stoc king up!!
  11. I seem to recall being on the same track. when this was first asked about in another thread.....adding some raw..eg mince... to a prem grade kibble and also giving chicken thighs or legs which are bigger and meatier and safer than necks..
  12. We all realises how a public forum operates. What is being objected to is the modus operandi of some. Their points of view are cloaked in snide assumptions and personal observations which have no place in this or any public forum. Those who say they love threads that become poisoned by the the negative slant of the high horse minority reveal in no small way the workings of their own thought patterns.
  13. Ive always fed my deep chested Danes from an elevated bowl...never any trouble. But I do make sure theres no high activity..running etc... round feed time or after.
  14. ...they appeared so quickly too.....
  15. This is Abbie...seven years old which is getting on for a Dane. Never had a real sick day in her life except for a couple of insect stings. Shes still very active and graceful but is a bit lonely at the moment as we just lost two of her lifelong mates to a Brown snake...then Parvo took her new little mate midway through his vacs. When its safe here shell have a new mate.
  16. Once again the RSPCA shows its true colours......
  17. My son lives in suburban Nth Richmond and found a shed brown snake skin in the yard!! Im very wary now when Im out there and also at home. Wouldnt dream of going for a walk in the local paddocks. Rozzie what a shame about Minnie and Peter. Damn brown snakes..they are aggresive buggars.
  18. Thank you....not the Danes...our two others, A Pointer cross and a Mastiff cross. Very distressing end for them though.
  19. Double post...but its the weather conditions I think is the reason.....very warm and humid equals active snakes.
  20. Two of our dogs were killed by an Eastern Brown two weeks ago. In their own back yard and within minutes of each other. It had come from a bushy reserve behind us and was nearly six foot long. The dogs had attacked it and naturally were bitten repeatedly.....no hope. two months earlier..same story next door, but in their garage. Day before yesterday..a black snake killed the same neighbours new pup.
  21. My bet is that she wont be a littlun......
  22. You are more than welcome in the Mutts and Mongrel thread Nixy.....where the posters there own both pure breds and cross breds and we all get along fine. I have a Dane and my sons own Wolfhound crosses. The Wolfy crosses are not as tall as the purebreds of course as smaller breeds were in the mix. Given the mix of tall breeds in your pup Id say it will not be small...come on over to the M@Ms and let us see some pics...
  23. Hes a beauty Tats....looking forward to seeing him grow....and grow...and grow
  24. One on one makes sense to me Rex. and the roar at them if they dont mind their manners..must tell you though Abbie will still barge in between Fergus and me ...jealous girl she is....
