Thanks Grace! I actually bought kangaroo mince today for him, to use instead of canned food. He's still off his food, but he seems a bit brighter today.
-
Thanks for your advice - I'll switch him over to the lite one. My other dog is a fatty, so they could both benefit from the low fat food!!

AI use a drop of peppermint essential oil diluted with water in a small spray bottle as a natural mozzie repellant for myself. Safe for dogs, but not sure about cats.

My 7yo dog hadn't been his normal playful self for about a month. He'd been going off his food too, and recently had stopped eating altogether. Vet took blood & diagnosed mild pancreatitis. He's fed Optimum dry & a little Optimum wet food mixed in (won't eat dry food otherwise). Vet said that should be OK, but to make sure he doesn't get treats or table scraps cause his diet should be low fat. He really doesn't eat much other than the optimum food & sometimes a bit of cat food that my cat doesn't want, so should I be changing his food to something more low fat? I'm worried he'll get so skinny! (He's a little lean IMO as it is).

I've been knocked back by rescue groups when I volunteered to foster for them (they were different groups, but pleading for fosterers at the time). Reasons were a bit OTT IMO: * I work full time (they only used foster carers that were home most of the time) * I don't have a dog door, so dog can't have 24 hr inside/outside access (this was a requirement) * I don't feed my dogs a BARF diet * my dogs sometimes slept outside if the weather was nice enough (to scare my neighbour's cat away as I kept an a avairy of birds) * they only use foster carers that live within 10mins drive from them (not sure why - animals had vet work done already) I' assume adopters would have to follow these rules too. Luckily other rescues were happy to have me & I've fostered over 20 animals over the years, maybe 30.
-
I wish all rescuers took the time to speak to people, like you have Muttrus. I honestly think rescue groups seem to bite off more than they can chew sometimes, & then get slack with their admin & customer service. That's the thing that needs to be strongest if they want to be a success. The better their PR, the more animals they can save in the long run because word of mouth is a powerful tool.

There's anti-theft dog leashes available (goes around the dog's neck too so thieves can't take the collar off). Called Dog Lock, i think? They have steal cable runiing through so can't be cut, and need a combination to undo it. I still wouldn't leave my dogs though, because I would't want anyone annoying, scaring or hurting them

Remember My Thread About Roxy The Boxer X
Pawfect replied to Pawfect's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hopefully you're right SG!! -
Original thread Well I thought i'd write back to say Roxy has a new friend - an (almost) blind labrador, who happily races around with her  Roxy was thrilled to finally have someone to play with!! (that fact that her playmate is eyesight impaired makes me wonder if it WAS Roxy's looks that put other dogs off. Poor Roxy!).
-
Thanks :) I'm not sure what the leash situation has been like, but no matter who is walking her it's been the same outcome so I don't think it's the owner vibes. Might be a tight leash though, because she'd be in the other dog's face if they didn't hold her back.

Naaawww - that is so sad. Poor munchkin!!
-
Interesting - i would have thought submissive would help the situation!..... Will try to get owner to work on keeping her still. She does still act like a puppy - doesn't read other dogs well at all & doesn't understand their signals.
-
Thanks for all the responses. Sorry it's taken me awhile to get back online!! I'm glad to hear that there's nothing terribly wrong with her to make dogs hate her so much & that she's not the only one to have these problems. She does need lost of training to get her to focus better & calm down a bit, but unfortunately her owner sees things differently so I don't see any dog training on the horizon. He is respectful of new dogs & doesn't allow her to get in their faces. He IS less cautious than i'd be though with meet and greet strategies Thanks for the kind offer milacon, but she's not mine & I only see her randomly. Her owner doesn't know i've posted here (he's a first time dog owner, she is his baby, and he doesn't see the problem or know what she's missing out on!). I'll casually run the idea past him though, and PM u if he's keen....thanks again :D

Oh that's sad - poor Brachy doggies. We'll have to introduce some brachy breeds into the family then so that Roxy can have friends ;)
-
Here's a pic She's actually not mine, so i'm not sure how she's been with Boxers specifically (or if she's ever met any). The owner hasn't had her a long time (maybe 6mths?), but so far no dogs have played with her that I know of. I don't think he takes her to dog parks though - just with friend's & family dogs, plus he takes her for 2-3 long walks a day so she meets other dogs on the street. As i said, she is very bouncy on approach. Her owner doesn't anticipate dogs will hate her (she is the apple of his eye!), but i think he takes her aside to let other dogs pass because of the bounciness. We've fostered & owned bouncy dogs before though, and dogs seem to hate her more than ordinary for some reason...

Roxy is a Boxer x, desexed female, 2yo & doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She loves everyone, & wants nothing more than to have a game with other dogs....but all dogs seem to hate her. Even ones that are totally fine with other dogs! It's really strange, but just the sight of her sets them off! On approach she is excited to see other dogs (bouncy), but is submissive (even to small dogs, she'll roll on her back). She wags her tail madly on approach & can get over-excited, but she is gentle. Over time the family's dogs have accepted her, but she's just DYING for someone to have a game of chasey with & they won't oblige. I feel so bad for her - is there some social etiquette she's lacking? Is there anything we can do to make dogs like her more?

Nail Clipping Using The Scissor Style Ones
Pawfect replied to Pawfect's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
They could prob do with some sharpening perhaps... Thanks for the link Boronia - I've seen those & wondered how they'd be. I'm just not sure she'd be still for it though - she even freaks out when i'm just handling her feet. They're cheap though, so no harm in trying I guess! -
Nail Clipping Using The Scissor Style Ones

Thanks Becks -I thought that was the case, but watching YouTube confused me! The clippers mightn't have been straight (cause of the wriggling), hence the twisting. -
Cost me $700 for my cat- argh!!!

Another Freaky Reaction From A Flea Product
Pawfect replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
They may have licked it off one of the other cats perhaps? -
Hi- I had a quick search & couldn't find the answer to this question so I thought you may be able to help me out! I have the scissor style dog nail clippers with a green handle & curved blade (looks like a guillotine, but in scissor form). As I hold my dog's nail I've been cutting from bottom to top/top to bottom of the nail, but this seems to twist her nail as I cut. Should I be cutting the nails from side to side instead? She has an absolute fear of having her nails cut (had to get a nail ripped out by the vet once), so I want to do it as quickly & pain free as possible. She's a real struggler & no amount of bribing has helped her get over her fear. I'm almost tempted to sedate her to do it TIA

Awww - I don't start my new job until Monday. Do I count?? ;)
