Oh dear! Chief has been vomiting and had diorrhea since yesterday and Turtle has just diorrhea. I don't know what's wrong - maybe they have eaten something bad? But both of them? Chief was up during the night a couple of times too. I'm worried. He's 8 and getting old for a Newfie. Turtle usually has an iron stomach. If I were in a normal situation I would take them straight to the vet, but I am 3 hours from my vet and wanted to sound things out here first. I can take them in tomorrow...has anyone experienced this before and are there any remedies I could help them with? I know there's not many details, I just don't know many - we went into town yesterday arvo and left the dogs and they've been like this since.

Great advice. We get some crazy storms unlike anything I've ever seen here in the Kimberley. We did the exact same thing with Turtle last year and it worked a treat. He doesn't even flinch now, which is good as we're in the build up to the wet now

My sister in law's pug does the same thing - she waits for everyone to clap ...she still does it at 16 months old

Just a quick update: We've had Chief for about two months and we weighed him about three weeks ago and he had lost 2 KILOS!!! :rolleyes: He's now 52kgs. I think since then he's probably lost another kilo too, he's starting to look a little less porky He also has a lot more energy on our walks and during the day which is awesome. We've been feeding him diet senior food, roo meat, sardines (for his skin). He only eats once a day, we tried for twice but he's not hungry in the morning. He was a bit hungry at first but now is going great guns! I'm so proud of the little porker...good work Chief!!

Excellent suggestions...thanks guys! As far as I can tell he doesn't have any serious joint problems (when I viewed him he was walking and moving quite well), but having said that if he stays porky for too much longer, he will have problems! We've always kept Turtle on the lean side while he was growing (he still is at 13 MO), and it's done him very well. He's in fab condition. I'm so determined to get this weight off him and give him real quality for the remainder of his life with us.

Thanks for the help guys - some great suggestions! Yeah, he's a little cutie, but a fat one! We've decided to change his name to Chief (if he lets us)...so now it's Turtle and The Chief...oh dear :D :D

Hi there, I am adopting a rescue Newfie and he is fat fat fat He's 8 years old and weighs 55kgs. We think he has some BC in him, so he's definitely not meant to be this big. We went to see him on the weekend and I couldn't feel his ribs. Apart from this he is in good health for an 8 yo. Can you guys suggest anything to get the weight off him? He's used to going for 1.5km walks everyday, but something tells me that maybe this wasn't EVERY day I mean, obviously it's diet and exercise, but what sort of diet? I have Turtle on Eukanubah and mince, just so you know. Thanks in advance He's been shaved in this one

yes, I must agree with that sentiment! Turtle always farts when you tell him to sit - it must do something to his muscles in that area kind of like when you're doing yoga sometimes ....anyone? come on, you know what I'm talking about :D

I know big dogs are known for their farting, but recently Turtle has started burping aswell...I'm a bit concerned as the breed are prone to bloat. We feed him twice a day instead of one big meal and he's a healthy weight. (he's a 1 year old Newfoundland). We're going into Broome on wednesday so there's the option of the vet... What do you guys think? Any thoughts?

Did you talk to the vet about her appetite? Agree that it's not a great diet, especially if it's not appealing to her. I'd say talk to your vet before making any decisions, it can't hurt. What about her breeder? Could you talk to him/her? They would know the pup better than the vet - maybe they could help.

Turtle LOVES strawberries - usually he's such a gutz with food, but he's so gentle and careful with strawbs, he takes ages to eat them. He also loves blueberries - will kill for them actually! Our old dog, Susie the pap, hated any fruit!

For memory, Turtle was around $250? But that was for a hernia on his belly aswell - can't remember what the straight cost was for desex. This was when we were visiting in Melbourne though, where we live in the Kimberley there is one vet - great :shakehead:
