Doggy Chiropractors
BaaabyFlynn replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sway- might need to hook up with you, the guy I go too is simply getting too old to lift large dogs -
Off to the specialist on Thursday - first time we could get in to see him. Dog is now panting like he is overheating - soon as he gets up and has a drink he is fine - i think it has more to do with his nose being crusted over (lesions bleed, blood clots, he gets crusty, clear the crust, lesions bleed, etc) he is playing and eating but is losing weight at a somewhat alarming rate. I think part of it is that ive put him on a pure meat diet for a few days - to try and get his stomach right - seems to have worked on that part - smallish firm poos just like I like them. I can put him back on his proper food now but I think the weight loss is also from stress - he lost 900gm in 5 days - possibly a little less 850gm - for a 37kg dog that is a fair amount - he needs to be around 38 He wont die of starvation any time soon but it is an alarming thing nonetheless coupled with all the other factors Hopefully specialist can put us on the right track Wish us luck We are going with fungus/infection from a foreign object/lupus/tumor in the nose

If it were me I would go the chemo in a heartbeat If you are in Victoria Charles Kuntz is the doctor to see. He is an oncologist and works out of Highett referral centre.

Ill ask re cushings when i go in tomorrow

Cortisone is a fab drug short term you need to find hte cause of the allergy and see if you can get rid of it
-
they did a general blood test on him - not a fasting blood test for glucose etc - but the vet has said basicall y- it is not diabetes - I will wait and see what the specialist says- his dose of cortisone today was huge - reducing it tomorrow and the next day etc
-
he sleeps with me most of the time so I will be able to keep an eye on him. right now he is demolishing a rawhide - good sign
-
he seems ok now - has woken up and gone for a drink and is now lying down and licking his feet and the carpet - all my dogs lick the carpet - they're mental
-
his heart seems to be beating awfully hard right now - as in I can SEE it - he has had cortisone today - could that have done it?
-
no this is where the specialist will come in

teeth are ok there is blood but its from the ulcerated areas my dog hasnt been "sexually active" in his life - he was desexed early and no one has mounted him and nor has he mounted anyone else - he doesnt socialise with other dogs outside my own dogs vet doesnt think the teeth ae a problem he had a dose of cortisone this morning - a high dose - and seems very happy tonight - will see how he is over the next coupld of days we are leaning towards discoid lupus at this stage but ideas are welcomed

Ok these are the symptoms my dog has 1. Bilateral discharge from the nose - yellow and clear - not profuse but it is there - and discharge from one eye 2. lesions on the inside of the nose - nowhere else at all 3. Drinking and urinating more 4. Very interested - almost obsessed by his own urine - drinking it 5. Lethargy - depression - he is still playing outside but if he was 100% before he is 70% outside and 50% inside the house 6. Monocyte count that indicates tumor/growth or infection It makes me think diabetes but urine tests TWICE have ruled it out Off to the specialist as soon as we can - perhaps he can shed light on this

reaction was sneezing and a snotty nose and behaviour as if something was up there - but not scratching it seems to be improving now we are off the food we were on pro plan salmon for a couple of years and the chicken and rice before that - he is on Purina ONE now til i get round to getting more pro plan. -

Sooky Dog, Distraction Class?
BaaabyFlynn replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
have you got something that really jazzes him up - a ball? I also believe in building a dogs self confidence through exercises where they win This is no no in general but to build up one dog I would let him win at tug of war ocassionally. from a dog that wouldnt play tug he became a dog that wouldnt let go unless giving a release command You've hit a plateau - if you had hit Plato he wouldn't be very happy - and you would be a time traveller I would build his confidence with small victories and stop sooking him when he is scared - just be cool calm and collected -
PurinaONE over supercoat here

vet said it was allergies - gave him a shot of anti histamine and some cream for his eye poor dog copped a ball in the face from mum - not on purpose - ended up with a blood nose which has stopped thankfully - not a running bloody nose just knocked the crust from his nose and voila blood. he also has the runs but they all went on vets all natural for their hips and all have the runs so i need to stop it - sashas blend had the same effect his appetite is fine, he is energetic - well right now he is stuffed as we have been out and about all day Im keeping an eye on him - will take his temp tonight again mum is coming over to watch him tomorrow Im hoping that this has all come to a head and with the antihistamines the sneezing etc go away for good no sneezing this arvo, even the snotty nose is sounding better thanks for all the info guys

so the problem was beyond your control then. good luck in future
-
vet took a look - not a terrible intensive look - wtf is it with vets these days? theyre becoming like doctors on medicare!! gave him a shot of anti histamines. some ointment for his eye - third eyelid is infected and some anti histamines to try this week - if all goes well we should be good thanks for the replies

Ive had a look over the net the only things that involve sneezing and discharge are 1. allergies 2. respiratory infections Ill pop into the vet tomorrow if i get a chance cause he seems to be a little listless - much like i am when i get my hay fever His symptoms are a lot like mine actually except the crust eye which is always full of dirt - but i dont dig in the ground with my nose AND I dont like in the dirt hehe
