Yes farm collie type dogs are in their background. I am relatively new in the breed (10 years) and initially breeders were testing only for PRA. The CEA test came later and most people are testing for both now. Interesting that in Europe a large majority of breedings are PRA clear to carrier. Intrigued, I asked why and was told that by breeding clear to clear they were limiting themselves with the choice of dogs and were perhaps passing on or doubling up on faults that may only show themselves further down the line. They felt that by discounting carriers they were throwing away some good quality dogs. I do know of a couple of carrier to carrier breedings for which he breeders coped a lot of flack. So in answer to your question, breeders are selecting carriers to breed from. In June last year I imported a 12 week old pup from Norway - he was from a carrier to clear breeding, both parents were CEA clear. I have tested him for PRA and he is clear (so is worth his weight in gold!) Interesting that none of his sibblings have yet been tested. I also have a PRA carrier (from a carrier to clear breeding), she has been steralised due to other health issues. My 4 other kids are all clear for PRA and CEA.

and if they do introduce cross breeding in Germany - what other problems will we see crop up in the breed further down the line that we currently don't have??

So what do you think about it and how it affects your dogs and your breeding program? BTW have you done COI on yor dogs? I am not sure how many generations they used for that 25% rate, do you know how many generations they area talking about? My non science background and the amount of reading I have done on the subject is poor Yes I have done breeding COI on all my kids and have to be honest and say most of them are around 24-25% (we do know of breeders in the US and Canada who go as high as 30-31%) - and the program goes back 10 generations. Our gene pool in Oz is very very small and yes there is a high degree of popular sire syndrome - something I am very mindful of with my Norweign import. There is a huge debate going on at the moment about outcrossing tollers in Germany for this reason, has all the breeders in the US and Canada up in arms.
  11. Yep that is good news. Speaking to the Derm on Tuesday - she would like to close her books because she is so busy and taking on an allergy dog means taking it on for life. She had seen 16 dogs before us on Tuesday . I hope you get him sorted.
  12. I'm with PIA too - can't comment yet because I am yet to make a claim. I too opted for the $250 excess
  13. Sorry to highack the thread .......BUT How long do I need to wait post being in season before having a girls hips x-rayed?
  14. Yeah I did that at one stage too, think I may need to start again. Pity its gonna be so hot today too. Maybe his allergies are worse because I am working now and he is outside for longer periods? Did you manage to get an Urgent Derm appointment??? When did he have his last immunotherapy jab?
  15. ;) Terrific news So can he start doing agility again???
  16. he has come a long way from when he was sore everyday. How did you get on with your ear? It still looks stupid but the antihistamines have kicked in! I did this for Deb but thought I would share: (ETA - it shows the progress of Toby's foot!) That is amazing - look at that squiffy sit in the second photos and how nice and tucked in his back legs are in the next one Deb has been so good to us and she is the reason why Moo is still competing
  17. he has come a long way from when he was sore everyday. How did you get on with your ear?
  18. Beans had her dermatology review this arvo. She hasn't been seen for 11 months - which confirms she is doing really well and we talked about how far she has come since she was first seen as a 4 months old puppy. Photos of her very very red face and bottom taken on her first visit are still used in the dermatology lectures. Beans had never done anything by the book, so for the last 5 years its been a case of suck it and see and change things as required. Over the next 2 months we are going to attempt to cease her anti-histamine and reduce her immunotherapy to every 3rd week for 3 months and then monthly thereafter- so it will be interesting to see how we go. Wish us luck
  19. and in a true elimination diet all the suppliments will have to be individually tested
  20. Soggy Bear can now add CH to the front of her name Now to start working on letters at the end
  21. Cider has now added CH at the front of her name and can officially retire from the show ring. She has asked that all her friends now call her CH Soggy Bear Now to work on adding some letters after her name Thanks to Rally Valley - we couldn't have done it without your help
  22. Was she a little pocket sized toller??? If so, thats Lexi's sister.
  23. It must be something about the colour or name because nobody wants my Moo either. So since I have been unable to trade, and the fact that this morning he did one nice cones sendaway (out of a possible 100 attempts) and his clothes are only semi broken - I have decided to keep him as a potential leg warmer during winter.
  24. Nah sorry mate - I had already included yours as one of the two!!! Maybe we could market them as a matching pair????
