Strauss Mouse, the stud boy was very good this morning winning novice with 194 - this was his title He did bring me back to earth with a loud thud this afternoon by missing 3 sits in the heelwork and also the down in distance control .

Sorry I was being lazy Here's the link http://dogscouts.org/Dog_Activ-_Scent_Discrim.html A lot of the obedience people use this method for teaching scent discrimination We usually have multiple sets of scent articles and with my experienced kids I can use the articles every day without causing a problem. When I begin teaching the exercise I tend to keep using the same article over and over so it is really really heavily scented. The wash cloths - I have probably 10 sets (10 cloths in each set) and I just keep rotating them and nope they have never been washed or unrolled Remember if you wash them you then have to roll them up again so they will all have your scent on them and I don't want this, also we all tend to use washing powder which is heavily scented which again I don't want to make it hard for the dog.

In formal obedience competitions (UD - Utility Dog) we use metal, wood and leather articles (5 of each article) and the dog is taught to bring back the one with the handlers scent. In UDX we use face washes which have been rolled and the steward puts down 8 clothes with their scent on them and the judge handles 2 cloths and puts one in the pack and gives one to the handler for the dog to scent and the dog needs to bring back the judges scent. We also do a seekback with decoy where one of the UD articles has our scent on it and the other has another persons scent and the dog needs to find ours....... Clear as mud??? Check out the dog scout website for teaching scent

Are you x-raying at your vet visit lappiemum?

For those of you not a friend on FB - meet my new girl Chica - who decided to show off her talents in hole digging before mum went to work

No cardiologists in WA as far as I know. I had an ultrasound done on Cider (organised through Champion Lakes) which showed no heart issues.
-
Mine all love Mydog too - I hate the smell Have you tried all the usual things like yoghurt, egg, cheese, mixed with her chicken? Congrats Mystiqview No long until April.........
-
I have to second this - you being home is great they will chill with you but the moment you stand up they will be ready to do something and they do have a high prey drive, although I think if you bring a puppy into an environment with cats you might have half a chance as the cats will be boss. You can be waiting up to 12 months to get a toller puppy too.

Tapau my boy would do that too but that isn't much help when he isn't the one that is pregnant. The girl who is is my best obedience dog who has had a run of visits to the vet over the last 6-12 months and seems to be getting worse with each one. She was very uncooperative last week when my vet (who treats dogs outside tried to palpate to see if she was pregnant), so I can't even blame the inside effect. Maybe I need to bring the clicker out and start training dead dog - I have 3 weeks to perfect it
-
Good luck Taupa and experiencefun - not long for either of you now and thanks for your thoughts on the x-ray and what you do with the feeding as you get closer to delivery. I think I would like to go down the path of having an x-ray so I know how many to expect and when she has finished delivering - but doubt very much she would lay still enough to have it done. Spoke to the vet who is prepared to give it a go so will see - have still got a couple of weeks before I have to make a final decision.
-
CC as I said you are much braver than I am - and it does look good Thanks for the offer of the translation book - but she is just going to have to learn English!
-
I can now tick feet trimming off her list - she layed across my legs and went to sleep bless her..... Maybe you need to take Gibbs down to the vets or City Farmers every weekend for a weigh in - the last thing you need is for him to put on weight.
-
Chica will be 3 in July.

I have got all my kids from pups - so training has started at 8 weeks of age - all except Strauss who didn't didn't escape from quarantine until 17 weeks. If I only had 1 or 2 dogs then I think it could be done because I would have the time to spend with her, but working full time makes it a bit more difficult. Rally might be a possibility, but at this stage I will be happy to take her on outings and let her settle in. Actually I noticed yesterday that she didn't like being brushed and I had already been warned that she didn't like her feet been trimmed and toenails being cut - so maybe some life skills to begin with.

Think Ptolomy is going to have her work cut out with her new little girl who doesn't speak any English - well other than sit and come which are the same in both English and Norwegian. Having said this - Chica is a sweetie - nothing phases her, the vacuum cleaner, dogs barking, meeting my 7 kids, going in the crate and for a dog who has only been fed dry food - she has licked her bowl clean and seems to be enjoying her change to raw food. She is a typical nosey toller and she has fitted in so well - couldn't ask for more than that
