Anyone Else Get Emotional As Your Dog Gets Older?
baifra replied to Muttaburra's topic in General Dog Discussion
Happy Birthday Maxi!! My little Stafford Jessie is 13 now. Her hearing is not what it used to be so she doesn't always greet me at the door when I come home from work ( always scares me a little so I look for her immediately). Her eyes are a little cloudy and her face is a grey mask. She sleeps a lot but boy does she do a bum wiggle dance when she claps eyes on the leads coming out!! She would still happily walk all day long if given the chance trotting along with her big Stafford grin. She sometimes needs to be carried up the stairs to bed at night and her snoring is getting louder and louder I try not to think about the inevitable and just enjoy her for who she is. She's my baby girl to the end. -
Farewell Kassy What a beautiful tribute to such a special little girl. So sorry for the loss of your little one. It sounds like she will leave behind a big hole. Always in your hearts.

How To Keep Snails Away From Vegie Patch!
baifra replied to baifra's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm pretty sure EDTA can still kill cats and dogs so I'm not prepared to risk it. Our Vegie patch will be fully fenced soon(ish) but I'd still worry to be honest. Thanks for the links Chipps -

How To Keep Snails Away From Vegie Patch!

Thanks Annie99. I'm going to give the beer a go but I think I'll leave the pellets out. Watching my parent's Rottweiler die not long ago from snail bait poisoning was heartbreaking and I will Never go through that again. -

I had a good chuckle at Sir Lance A Luck Van Ducksy. We had a Rotty when I was younger called Monsignor McFriab. She was a legend of a dog!! However I'm not sure how practical the duck idea is I believe my Cattle dog may present some problems!! :p -
How To Keep Snails Away From Vegie Patch!
baifra replied to baifra's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most basic technique is to go out at night with a torch and pick them off the plants and squish them! If it's a raised garden bed, you can try the copper tape (one brand name is "Slugga", but there are several) around the perimeter. This also works around pots. Another one to try is placing used coffee grounds around the perimeter or around the plants. You need lots though - see if you can collect from a workplace or cafe. The caffeine is toxic to them. Thirdly, they hate travelling over sawdust, so a sawdust perimeter may help stop new ones from joining the party. Also traps work quite well. You bury them so the lip is level with the soil, and half fill with old beer or vegemite dissolved in water. You can buy traps ready made with lids (work best in rain) or make your own with tin cans or plastic bottles cut up (need to be about 10cm deep). You have to clean then out and put fresh attractant in about every 2 days. Good luck!! Thanks for those tips. I like the coffee idea. Our vegie patch is raised which may help a little. -

Yeah I've done that too but I wanted to ask people here to see what really is effective especially with pets in mind. -
We have just planted vegies in our brand new vegie patch and there are snails everywhere!! I won't use any commercial snail baits as our family lost a dog to the evil stuff a little while ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Oh Raelene, I'm so sorry for your loss of Zoe. I have tears pouring down my face  I know how much you and Malcolm love her and I'm so glad I had the pleasure of meeting her on a couple of occasions. She was divine and such a wonderful character. She looked so much like little Jessie, I could never tell them apart when we visited. Rest easy Zoe... you did your loving family so proud, forever in their hearts. Take care guys, we are thinking of you at such a devastating time. xxxx

And that's all it is..... inflammatory crap!! Using the words dangerous, attack and nasty don't help at all. I own one of those 'nasty' little cattle dogs and she is none of the above. Sadly a lot of people read this shite and take it as gospel.

Yes there are paralysis ticks down this way. Lots of em!! I use advantix every 14 days on my dogs and check them everyday. They haven't had a tick to date thankfully. Your dogs can swim after having advantix applied. Probably best to wait a day or so first.

All the best for you and Chase today!! I'm so glad he is improving. He has been in my thoughts. There is nothing more heartbreaking than not being able to help those you love the most.

If he doesn't look any better by this morning I'd take him to the vet. Poor bugger. Hope he feels better soon. -
