  1. I have never heard of water diabetes but diabetes insipidus is usually an acute diagnosis in humans caused by a few things, eg head injuries. I have never heard of it as a chronic problem or in dogs. Very interesting. My lab x has diabetes mellitus and requires two injections of insulin a day. alanglen what did you do to treat/ manage it? did u use DDAVP? Thats what we use when a human has it.
  2. Yup, started that today too, forgot to mention it. Their runs are beside the garage, so there's one in there turned up loud enough for them to hear it. Bugger!!
  3. I dont know if this is helpful but my grandmothers dog was a barker and when she went out she left the radio going (talk back radio sadly!!!) This actually worked!! I know your doggies are outside but what about a cheap radio on top or next to the runs? Makes them feel like they are not alone.
  4. They are very cute........ even if they are SWF
  5. Yes trust your instincts. If it is diabetes or kidney dysfunction the dog can get sick very quickly. good luck, i hope he is just thirsty!!!
  6. Your vet is the only person who can diagnose any possible problem as he/she can closely examine them in person. The fact that both of them are unwell would have me up at the vets quick smart. Good luck. I hope they are both fine and healthy.
  7. I'd get him checked out sooner rather than later. The fact that his urine is clear first pee of the day usually means he is not getting rid of his waste products. This pee should look the most concentrated of the day. The fact that he is 8, slightly overweight and drinking too much, points toward diabetes or kidney dysfunction. They are the very same symptoms my lab cross had before she was diagnosed with diabetes nearly 3 years ago. However she became a little urinary incontinent during the night due to all the excess water.
  8. Pigs ears are my dogs favourite snack. They get so excited when they see the box come out of the cupboard!! As with all snacks they are supervised.
  9. RIP lovely man. You touched my heart.
  10. A dog is there for better or for worse i say!! If the doggie seems to enjoy life still, then PTS is not an option. Saying that, sleep deprivation is agony so i really feel for you. Good luck!!
  11. Good luck with your new dog!! He sounds like a handful. Sounds like you have done your homework and will do good by him. I admire you for being such a young mother. Takes a lot of guts to walk away from someone you know can only hurt you. Doing it alone is tough and good luck with midwifery. Nursing is a great profession!!! Like you said, you came here for some advice and not a tongue lashing!! Take the good advice and run with it and ignore the rest. Not worth worrying about. only you know how well you treat your dogs and children and that all that matters in the end.
  12. I was getting that feeling also. Its amazing how she is one minute singing the praises of Cesar and then suddenly Cesar is no longer the flavour of the month. This trainer is painful to watch. As always, her methods will work wonderfully with some dogs but definately not all. She even held up a prong collar and all the audience went Ooohhhh and she said it was like something out of the spanish inquisition. Too touchy feely and playing on peoples emotions for my liking. Yeah i agree, that kind of ''training'' with my red heeler just wouldn''t work. She is quite stubborn and needs the caesar type of training. However, each to their own and whatever works really!! Her use of the prong collar as a prop designed to shock the audience did the trick for her didnt it? Wonder what she will use next???
  13. I get the impression that she is having little digs at caesar milan!
  14. Gorgeous photo's!!! Puppies are just adorable!!! They look like trouble tho. You may need eyes in the back of your head!!!
  15. Iv'e had a diabetic dog for nearly three years now and have had two very supportive vets. However I think that when the owner finally becomes comfortable with the disease, as at first the diagnosis is very overwhelming!!, that the owner's input is very important. I mainly manage my dog's insulin dose although i dont change it very often and when i do i usually take her to the vet for a check up. I keep a diary of her BGL's and write down what we were doing when she was high or low and what symptoms (if any) she was showing. When she was first diagnosed i raced out and bought a glucometer and was taking her blood sugars every five minutes!!! Now i'll do one only if she is "not herself". Im lucky as she has never had a 'hypo' but i always carry a cannister of glucose just in case!! What I'm trying to say is that a good vet/ owner input is very successful. My vet is also happy if the blood sugars are less than 10-12 (she is 12 years old so we are not so strict with her diet) and my dog seems to be her happiest within that range
  16. What a beautiful dog. May he rest in peace.
  17. Thats a beautiful tribute to a dog you obviously loved( and still do ) very much. I dont look forward to letting my oldest go who is now 12 and starting to have 'multiple medical problems' . It's so nice to see how close they are still in your memories after so long.
  18. I was home when the gate was left open and half the house was open to the elements!! short of glueing my dog to my side 'accidents happen' and the tradie who told me that my dog had left the yard saw her leave and waited a while before telling me. I take full responsibility for my dogs and as you so elequently put it.... i dont expect my cake and eat it to!! There are a lot of 'perfect' dog owners out there tonight who feel the need to judge everyone.
  19. Are you kidding me???? Could you be anymore judgemental?? What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. She said she works full time!!! Are full time workers not allowed to have pets?
  20. what peeves me the most is that we had a number of conversations and they did not see it as a problem until the day gggrrrr. I know what you mean. Labourers have let my dogs out leaving gates open and then not bothering to let me know that my dog has gone.!!!! who does that??????
  21. Thats really sad. Poor doggie. Unfortunantly other people dont love our dogs as much as we do. I dont think labourers are obligated to follow instructions that have nothing to do with their duties though. However if they have a problem, they should speak up instead of treating your poor dog in such a way.
  22. The decision should be yours. My dogs have had various lumps checked over the years and i always insist on having the lumps aspirated. My current vets aspirate and the results are available within minutes. And not once have they needed to have surgery for lump removal!! It really is up tp you. Whatever puts your mind at ease. I hope it all works out well. Good luck with your doggie!!!
  23. Oh how sad, our last foster dog was hard to say goodbye to, my heart goes out to you and his adoptive family. What a distressing thing to have to see. May the big beautiful boy rest in peace.
  24. Hi, We are going through a similar situation ourselves with our old lab cross. She has arthritis, diabetes, is going deaf and has a large lump under her chin. After many tears and discussion we decided that quality at her age was far more important than quantity so we wont be stessing her with any more operations. It's a very personal decision and one only you can make. Your doggie has been with you for such a long time and im sure she will let you know when the time has come for her to go. Good luck with your decsion. Your not alone.
  25. Hi there, there is the Australian Cattle Dog, also known as red heeler, blue heeler, queensland heeler or ACD. Then there is a different breed called the Australian stumpy tailed cattle dogs. They are red speclkled or blue speckled with black markings on the head. Considered different breeds but look very similar to the untrained eye!!!
