OK I would probably go for a Cavalier for a childs pet :D But if you were after a working breed I would get a Koolie koolies are great all round dogs, happy to be with their family , you can get various lengths of coat and colours and they have an OFF switch. I can recommend you breeders in your area if you are interested in meeting some. CLICK for koolie info

Do You Have To Put The Anti-tick Stuff On The Back Of The Neck?
sheree_e4 replied to Jennt's topic in General Dog Discussion
Best idea is to keep him clipped short .... no longer than a #7 that way if he gets a tick its much easier to find (this means all over not just his body, his face and ears clipped short too) .... No tick protection is 100% effective you need to check him every day. Also maybe switch to frontline spray - you will need to wet him all over with it ,pay attention to his face and feet aswell ...must be covered EVERYWHERE better to have too much than not enough and it lasts 3 weeks for paralysis ticks. Also most ticks are found FORWARD of the front legs but this does not mean they will not attach elsewhere. -

without a photo its impossible to say - I would register him as a terrier mix.

Its not that the frontline is not working its the fact the dog is being re-infected . I would be looking at getting your house sprayed and making sure all pets are treated at the same time including cats if you have them. Frontline spray works alot better than the top spot as it adhears to the coat, the top spot travels in the oil glands in the dogs skin. If all else fails comfortis works very well but does not cover against ticks.

Just thought I would add Koolies registered with the Koolie Club of Australia, are able to be registered on the VCA, RNSWCC & CCCQ state sporting registers. This allows koolies to compete in dog sports run by those governing bodies and be recognized as Koolies on awards etc. Koolies are not able to be bench shown. Dogs are NOT required to be de-sexed to be registered on Sporting Registers. I was under the belief that "mutts " had to be desexed to compete ???

jerojath - can I ask which "breed" you would be refering too ?

I have used with great success a remote vibrate collar, it works for barking, digging or any other unwanted behaviour so long as you are there to see whats happening and press the button. He may also be doing it for attention, he humps you yell and he gets the attention he is seeking - negative reinforcement. I have also used it with 2 dogs who would not come when offlead,I would call them and if they kept going the oppisite direction to me one vibrate was enough to get them to come back. They no longer wear the collars but they do come every time they are called With the collar on I do not say anything just one vibrate and the behaviour stops, this may take awhile before it stops completely but it works very quickly on the koolies Remote vibrate collar

Treatment For Ticks Only (not Fleas)
sheree_e4 replied to Malamum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Proban kills both fleas and ticks however if treating for ticks you give it every second day. The only product I can think of that only kills ticks is a preventic collar and I would not reccomend one. The last bottle of frontline spray (500ml) I brought sprayed 8 puppies and 1 small dog and 5 med dogs (koolies) and I had a tiny bit left .... I do go through a bottle every 3 weeks ($118) - Just to give you an idea on how long a bottle would last you. -

Can I suggest Frontline SPRAY .... I am a vet nurse and if you spray him every 3 weeks it protects against paralysis ticks aswell as being so much better than the top spot. I use frontline spray on my flea allergic cat and he has not had any bald patches since swapping over from the top spot to the spray. Just remember with the spray to cover (wet) the whole dog, feet and face etc. you cannot overdose but if you underdose it won't be very effective against the ticks I can also say there have been many dogs come into work with severe flea allergy and comfortis works wonders you will not be doing any harm useing top spots with comfortis as they have different active ingredients. However if it were me id use frontline spray as it adhears to the coat .... while the comfortis is in the bloodstream . -
Ok I would get your dogs frontline sprayed this will last for 3 weeks against paralysis ticks longer for fleas ... the difference between the top spot and the spray is the spray adheres to the coat where the top spot goes through the oil glands in the skin - and then if they are swimming everyday I would be giving them proban every 2nd day. Tick collars / topspots would be a waste of money, they would not be effective at all. Also if you have a long coated dog think about getting the dog clipped before coming down, when I say clip I mean a #7 all over leaving the tail but all fur on the head and ears clipped short as most ticks are found forward of the front legs but this does not mean they won't attach in other areas.

Tick Treatment , What Do U Reccomend?
sheree_e4 replied to springdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have to agree with frontline 'top spot' not being very good, my cats still had fleas while being treated every 2 weeks and they are indoor only cats. BUT Frontline SPRAY is excellent you just have to remember to spray the whole dog /cat every 3 weeks for ticks . eta - indoor only cats -

Had several people in our area have used them and their dog got tick paralysis and are covered in fleas, one GSD had tick paralysis within 2 weeks of being treated - they now get frontline sprayed every 3 weeks and have not had a tick since. Paralysis ticks kill more dogs and cats than any of the preventions available. Frontline spray adhears to the coat so once the dog sheds the coat it falls off. Just so you know fipronil the active ingredient in frontline spray is used on the vege's we eat - Registered crops range from row crops such as rice, corn, potatoes and small grains to specialty crops such as ornamentals, mangoes and chili peppers. -
It is true that some dogs are immune to Paralysis ticks BUT they do not develop immunity to ticks. They either are or arn't immune. If your dog has tick paralysis and recovers and then gets another tick it is actually more comprimised. They can develop immunity from exposure - let me know if you want me to find sources but there have been studies where the exposure to paralysis tick was built up over time and immunity developed. It might not last forever but it does happen. I think it is not helpful for information being posted that is not true - not every dog/cat will get immunity from ticks Immunity SOME dogs and cats will develop immunity to ticks overseveral years of low grade exposure. If an animal is affected and recovers from a case of tick paralysis this does NOT make them immune. In fact, if they are affected within a few weeks of the initial case they will suffer more seriously the second time. LINK Do animals develop immunity to the tick paralysis toxin? Native animals which are the natural hosts of Ixodes holocyclus appear, (when in their natural environment), to develop an immunity to the harmful effects of the tick toxin, and can carry large numbers of ticks without ill effect. Dogs and cats which live in areas where they regularly pick up ticks will also tend to develop their own immunity. This depends on them gettingsmall doses of tick toxin initially, not enough to cause severe illness, but enough to start the production of antibodies by the animal's immune system. As they pick up more ticks and are injected by gradually increasing doses of toxin this immunity can become quite strong. Unfortunately this immunity is not long lasting and can be lost from one season to the next if there are no ticks on the animal in the time between. A previously immune dog can therefore suddenly become affected by tick paralysis. Owners should be aware of this risk. Owners are also commonly misled by the fact that a dog frequently carries ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis (Bush Ticks) which resemble Ixodes to some degree but do not inject a toxin. These dogs may have no immunity at all to the Ixodes toxin and can easily be affected by tick paralysis. Dogs or cats which have been given Anti-Tick Serum as treatment for tick paralysis should not be expected to have any increased immunity after treatment. LINK I could post many more links but it boils down to the fact that, you should treat your dog reguardless if you believe it has any immunity.

I would not reccomend shoo tags for paralysis ticks.... I personally find frontline spray the best for paralysis ticks, Once applied lasts for 3 weeks and if you see a tick you can kill it by spraying with the frontline. The spray adhears to the coat and is quick drying - I believe the safest thing to use around kids as there is no oily residue on the dogs coat like there is after using a top spot.Remember you must apply the spray all over your dog. If you decide on using a top spot (Advantix /frontline plus)please note you need to apply at least 2 days before you leave and apply every 2 weeks. -
She should be ok if she shows no symptoms today , that being said I would not leave her for more than 4hrs without someone checking in on her, just in case she does have a missed tick

NO this would not work, I have heard so many "natural tick control" crap to last a life time. This definatly DOES NOT work for paralysis ticks. Please remember alot of these sites are American and our ticks are alot different to theirs. I have been told when they did tests for advantix and frontline in America they had to change their way do conducting them as the paralysis ticks would walk on the glass rods used lol.

Dogs with tick paralysis can/will vomit - once they vomit or start getting gurgly this is a bad sign . The reason for no food or water is if the throat becomes paralised your dog could choke and/or get pneumonia.
-
I would check her a couple of times, but do not rev her up,its best she stays calm and quiet. Once they get excited they go downhill quick. REMEMBER NO food and NO water.

Yes I have a pinned thread HERE

I am a vet nurse from a very bad paralysis tick area from experience lol , a newly attached tick is not a fat so to speak , much smaller and different coloured.
-
Keep her quiet - LOCKED IN A CRATE. NO food or water for 24hrs if no symptoms. She will go downhill after the tick is removed. only out to toilet on lead. any change of breathing or bark , wobbly back leg STRAIGHT TO VET do not wait till morning. Check her all over again, there could be more than one tick, and if she does not have frontline/ advantix or permoxin on do it now. Most dogs who have no protection will go down hill.
