  1. Yes you can get the vacc done at the same time as desexing......We regulary do this for both rescue dogs and 'owned' dogs we also do what is known as the works -desex,vacc and chip all at once. The bonus of having the vacc and/or chip done while they are under GA is they don't know it's being done and it's less painful for them. We have had NO adverse effects doing this from as young as 8 weeks.
  2. Asprin can kill dogs - just like chocolate some dogs seem fine others have an allergic reaction. It is a possibilty that the asprin caused it ................. If I were you I'd see the vet to get some rimadyl for occasions such as these........Much safer.
  3. I have tried one and it would not be my first choice for training purposes. I would never reccomend one. My dog who walks perfectly on a regular collar pulled alot when trying it and he is advanced obedience trained. I think the black dog training halter is by far a better option (NOT the infin8 I found these pretty useless) This may not be everyones opnion but its what I've found while instructing.
  4. Well obviously she had a GA and it took about 40 mins to do as she had a extreamly thin layer just before the pulp would have been open so I was really lucky. so basically there is a glue type mixture which is applied first this is then set using a special light, then the putty stuff is mixed up and applied, this is also set with the light, once this is set a special drill piece is used to shape the tooth. We got some great before and after shots I'm just waiting for them to be emailed to me. I am so happy I chose to try this method I was told it was a bit more expensive than a removal but Matilda is worth every cent!! I will give an update with pix asap. Thanx DFA for your support ;) ETA - funnily enough another dog came in today with the same problem so they are considering the same restoration after seeing how great the result for Matilda was.
  5. Just wanted to let everyone know that both girls are fine- Kirah is on antibiotics Matilda had a tooth restoration - its not the same size as her other canine but looks great, she is also on antibiotics. Will update tomorrow with price and pix for those who are interested as I have not got the final bill yet.
  6. No worries, will update as to what happens and price of a cap tomorrow arvo at around 5. hopefully all will go smoothly for Matilda and Kirah. Kirah should only need antibiotics and possible stitch up if it does not close tonight and pain killers. Matilda may need tooth extraction(highly likely),and antibiotics and pain killers. Junior thank dog does not even bother getting involved with the girls arguments. Thanx once again for your help
  7. Dogsforall and Baifra for sharing your experiences with me. I guess I will just have to get used to the idea of having it removed I wish they had never had that dissagreement :D then they would both still be in 100% health.
  8. She is a purebred Reg Koolie but cannot be shown as they can only be reg on the sporting register.ATM maybe one day! I was just wondering as I have not actually seen it done but have heard of it. More for me I guess so she does not look 'different' to the others
  9. My dogs had a dissagreement eailer today and 2 are booked in to come to work (i am a vet nurse) with me tomorrow........................ Matilda chipped her canine tooth so it will more that likely be removed as the pulp is showing but I was wondering if anyone has had a cap/crown put on their dogs tooth? We have never been asked to do this for the whole 14mths I have been nursing so there are some questions I would like answered if at all possible. 1.How long will a cap stay on for?(i mean will they last with a dog chewing bones etc) 2.cost? 3.do you regret not getting it capped?(those who opted to remove the tooth) 4.do you wish you had just got the tooth removed in the first place?(those who chose to get a cap done) :p in advance
  10. He is claiming you! My dog Junior (black dog) Used to cock his leg on me and everything he could reach before he was desexed. Since he has been castrated when he was 1 (8yrs ago now) he has stopped marking people, other dogs and anything that is considered not his. I also joined dog obedience classes. If you were the ALPHA he would not dare do this to you. It is a dominance problem, you say every time he does it you make him submit - in what way? If your leadership is lacking which it sounds like it is,he will continue to do this even though when he does it you make him submit - by you making him submit when he does it and you not being alpha makes him want to mark you again. If he is entire and not going to be used for breeding DESEX him ASAP. I suggest you do some of the following- 1.Do not let him higher than yourself (If your on the lounge he is on the floor) 2.Do not let him on your bed-if you want him in your room finr but he has his own bed on the floor. 3.feed him after you have eaten 4.do not pat him when he wants to be patted-Only when you want to. 5.make him work for his dinner- get him to sit then you pretend you are eating the food before giving it to him. 6.do NOT let him walk in front of you - This includes doorways, gates and when walking he should heel -I have a release word which is 'go play' this means my dogs can walk ahead or be let off for a run BUT they are also told "working" for the walk home so they know they can walk ahead but when I say so hope some of this helps
  11. Do you have an undercover veranda? If so I would buy a crate and keep him confined unless you can supervise him in the yard - here is the cheapest I've found CHEAP DOG CRATE Until you get one can you confine him to the laundry? DO NOT leave him tied up after de-sexing he could get tangled in the chain and burst his stitches. I also found with my dog who used to jump out of the yard if he had a elisabethan collar on he would not jump out as he could not judge the jump properly. eta - clarify what I meant.
  12. I'm a vet nurse and I would reccomend that you keep him quiet for a couple of days - no jumping for toys etc, regular walking is fine. Don't let him lick too much as he may try to pull the stitches out so may need an elizabethan collar. Treat him like normal just no excessive running and jumping. Males get over desexing usually within 24hrs you would not even know they have been done. If nylon stitches are put in these are generally removed in 10 days. GOODLUCK. oh and don't let him eat anything after 6pm tonight only fluids. eta - most vets will give a long acting pain killer when they are sedated and will send home a pain pack with rimadyl or something similer
  13. I'm a vet nurse and I reccomend that you take your dog to a vet to make sure the pulp is not exposed as this will cause a emmence amount of pain. The canine tooth has a very large root and this will need to be removed or you will get and infection which can spread in the jaw causing it to breakdown and result in more teeth needing to be removed. Either way your dog IS in pain.
  14. FRONTLINE SPRAY does not go into the bloodstream - it adhears to the fur! It is safe to use on pregnant bitches and puppies which is why I reccomended it for a chi. It will not make any puppies deformed.
  15. If your dog is allergic to fleas they don't need to have fleas to have flea allergy - all they need is 1 flea to jump on bite and jump off to start the scratching.
  16. Sounds like your dog has a flea allergy,You don't need to see fleas to have the allergy. Some dogs all it takes is one bite for them to start itching. Try using a flea product like Frontline in conjuction with PERMOXIN as it will repel fleas and is excellent for treating dogs with allergies. Try using the ALOVEEN shampoo and leave in con with the above. If you are using Malaseb shampoo it MUST stay on for 10mins before rinsing off or it will have no effect, you are also better off using Pyohex conditioner with the malaseb shampoo.
  17. I think 3 is great, just make sure you can have 3 in your local council though. I recently got my 3rd dog and everyone loves her even Kirah who is dog aggressive!!
  18. Hate to scare you but I am a vet nurse and we had a dog come in with what we thought was most likely a grass seed,we opened up the lump but could not find anything. We then rang the owner for permission to take x-rays which she agreed to. After devoloping the x-rays I saw the strangest thing I have ever seen - It was not a grass seed but a sewing needle! It had travelled from near his elbow to near the shoulder,we actually had to "look" for it as it had travelled so far. My advice is find a way to get the dog to the vet, maybe arrange a payment plan...........I know GE money do credit cards for pets.
  19. Animalsluvbree - I think that has to be the best post I have ever read couldn't say it better myself!! Fontline DOES work it's just you have a bigger flea problem than you think. ALL fleas which jump on your dog will die,but the dog is constantly being re-infested. You need to spray your entire house ALL rooms, anywhere the dog goes even the garage, block off any access under the house. To have total coverage use FRONTLINE in conjuction with PERMOXIN and always wash your dog in a soap free,ph balanced shampoo and conditioner eg Aloveen or Natural by dermcare. eta- you also need to treat EVERY animal in your house including the cat or rabbit at the same time!!
  20. Yes,All the dogs that have played up have been with the owners present btw the majority of the dogs we see have owners who treat them like kids and the dogs have no respect for them,Take the owner out of the picture and have someone come in who won't put up with sillyness and they are totally different. BTW I'm not implying that jeffncel does baby her dogs, but from experience dogs who misbehave with owners present usually behave fantastically without their owners. I have even had a lady drop her dog off to me and warned me that he bites when he is being bathed HE WAS GREAT,no owner no problem, when he was picked up he started growling at everyone ;)
  21. just a question? where you watching while she was being bathed? I am a vet nurse and we do hydrobathing and I have found through experience that if owners are around the dogs play up something shocking,However get the same dogs dropped off and owners go away (shopping etc) and pick them up later you would think that they had swapped dogs. Maybe take her and drop her off and see if this makes a difference.
  22. I would use a shampoo and conditioner on your puppy fortnightly at the most.Mine are done maybe every 2 months but they are not allowed on beds or furniture. ALOVEEN shampoo(by dermcare) is great ,as is the leave in conditioner which helps with the oils lost due to bathing.ALOVEEN is ph balanced and will not interfere with frontline.Natural shampoo also by Dermcare is good too I use frontline plus top spot on my dogs, but for a chi frontline spray would be econmonical, however if you use frontline it is reccomended you wait at least 24hrs after a bath before applying. PRICELESS PETS is a good cheap site for flea products. eta- Frontline plus top spot is monthly for fleas,FORTNIGHTLY for ticks if you are in a tick area. Fronline spray will kill fleas for 6 weeks, APPLY every 3 weeks for ticks. The more you bath the dog the less effective the produts will be.If you use a soap free shampoo and con like ALOVEEN it won't remove as much of the product.
