  1. This could definitely be explained better but I’m short on time, so apologies if I’m unclear or confusing in my explanation I was taught whilst studying vet nursing that for a vaccine to be effective you need to have had each component of the vaccination twice. Most puppies will be given a C3 initially, then a C5 then another C5, until they have had that last vaccination they are not covered for every component of the vaccination. There is also the issue of mother’s immunity and when it runs out. Some vets will argue that you should wait to 16 weeks for the last vaccination as in most dogs the mothers immunity will have run out therefore the last vaccination will be effective (as if you vaccinate when the mothers antibodies are still in the pup the reduces the effective of the puppy to create its own immune response to those diseases). We did out last vaccination at 14weeks and took him walking 10 days later, I discussed this matter with my Vet and he did not feel that we had anything to worry about in regards to having him vaccinated at 14 rather then 16 weeks. However I was aware of the risks and decided to take that risk and we have not had any issues. Vets all have differing opionions on vaccinations, there are also many different brands and types of vaccinations so I still feel the best thing you can do is discuss the matter with your vet and see what he/she has to say after all they are the ones trained in this field. I highly recommend also enrolling your puppy in puppy class we found it to be such a wonderful way to socialise Marley, our last dog was not socialised properly and we paid for it… he was terrified of other dogs! Marley is now so confident and friendly with other dogs it was worth the money we paid. They also discussed everything from worming and vaccinations through to grooming.
  2. As everyone has said they molt a fair bit. Brushing weekly will reduce the amont of hair around, during molt brush a few times a week. With my old cav one he got older around 6-7 I used to clip his body short, leaving his ears and tail long I think he looked beautiful still and it reduced the amount of hair around the house. We have a cav puppy now, until he gets his full coat he shouldnt molt too much but i'm brushing him weekly now to get into the routine and so he gets used to it. I use a slicker brush for the whole coat/ears/tail that gives the coat a real good brush out and i use a fine comb and a shedding comb to make sure there arn't any knots ive missed. However it is a good idea to use a softer type brush to begin with as those brushes are quite harsh and most puppys will not like them.
  3. Thankyou very much, I shall try those sites out. The coin in container idea sounds like a good one to me
  4. WA. For starters it’s not me he growls at it’s my Mum, she's too soft on him. We've had dogs before and never had a problem so making the assumption that we're are being soft, inconsistent and such is not a fair or correct assumption. With my Father and I he never growls. Sometimes he’s good and will listen, however the moment there is a distraction he suddenly goes deaf. We aren’t planning on taking him to just one lot of training, we have to start somewhere and we have tried other places and found them to be useless. It was recommended by the vets I work with to go to the RSPCA training and so we are. After that we’ll reassess where to go. What I was hoping to get when posting this message was suggestions on how to gain and keep his attention as that is the biggest problem. As well how to handle situations in which he is refuses to do what he’s told.
  5. Hello Everyone I’m new to this forum, I need some advice. I have a 20week old CKCS puppy named Marley. I love him to bits he's a character and a half! However when Marley doesn’t want to do something Marley will NOT do it! He grumbles when taken of my bed, he'll mouths and bites constantly (and I know he's teething) and I’ve tried redirecting his biting to toys but it doesn’t work if he wants to chew my clothes or my hand he will! He is so stubborn and will bluntly refuse to do things, if he doesn't want to come he wont, even when I’m jumping around like an idiot trying to be more exciting then the thing he's interested in...!!!!!!! He's enrolled in obedience training (the RSPCA course) but it doesn't start till September!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So any advice of what I can do in the meanwhile to make my naughty puppy listen to me?
