;) I'm so excited...after 5 weeks of 2 toilet breaks a night my pup went the whole night without going last night!! Best sleep in ages He must be finally learning to hold it, or now that he is out doing walkies he is too tired to be bothered leaving the comfort of his bed

You poor thing! You must be terribly sad RIP Gracie, we are sending happy doggy heaven wishes your way xxxx Have you contacted your vet?

The first product I used was Pet SOX it was from petbarn. It was pricey but great, completely removed stains and odour and had no odour of its own (is an enzyme spray). I decided to try a cheaper product also from per barn second time around but I dont like it as much. It doesn't remove the stain as well plus has a scent to it that smells like cheap toilet deoderiser...if you have bad stains I'd fork out for the first, worth the $$ IMO. Of course if you dont mind being persistent (returning a few times to stain) you could just use vinegar.

I have only just started walkies with my pup but I know when we get home he flops down like he's run a marathon (we walk for 10 mins max) and cant play and can barely be bothered to drag himself over to his water. So maybe your pups just really tired...the door closing thing may be that your pup thinks everyone is gone when the door shuts then notices your OH is still there to play with so gets some renewed energy?? Mine does a very similar thing when the front door shuts, a quick scout around the house and if he finds anyone he plays with his "treasure". Dont feel guilty, your pup probably isn't as complex as you think Food and love, food and love...I'm pretty sure thats all they repeat in their heads.

My pup was getting worse and worse with mouthing when he got excited so we had a crack down last week. Every time he wraps his mouth around our hands we wrap our hand over the top of his snout (without blocking his nose)look him straight in the eye and say BA...it has virtually completely stopped in the space of a week, he will sometimes still have a go at bare feet but even that is slowing down. It didn't take that long really, I was impressed. We are still continuing firmly with it though.

The verdict is in...several times over - even new formula greenies make poos green and runny! Probably because he is only a puppy though and it was his first one.
-
Good news so far Pup has woken up from his nap...done vigorous zoomies and then gobbled down some treats during training...today we refined high 5 and learned gimme 10! Am relieved but will be watching carefully...no more greenies for us though...

I feel like a bad mummy now , and I'm really worried pup is going to get sick....in fact I feel sick He is currently sleeping, hope he is ok when he wakes up

Ooops Had no idea! My pup gets real bones too, I just thought I'd try them because they were there. There was no swallowing in chunks...it took him a couple of hours to eat the smallest version, I guess I won't buy anymore in that case...anyone got a link to the threads so I can have a look? That's scary...

Mazza and I went to the vet today for his 2nd vacc and they were selling greenies at the counter...so I thought I'd get one for Maz to try, coz he was such a good boy at the vets. I gave it to him at 10.00 when we got home and he has been chewing at it religiously for almost 2 hours! Occaisionally he "buries" it in another location of the study for 2 mins and then runs around manically searching for it again so he can have a good old chew...I dont think I've ever seen him so quiet. If you haven't tried them, get some!! I only bought one in case he didn't like it but I'm definitely going to get some more.

I like it!! Will try that today. I did the turn and ignore thing and it increased his barking, but it work with persistence. Pushy lil bugger!

Hi there, I don't know how to glue ears but I'll tell you something I heard the breeder of my pup recommend to an owner of a schnauzer mini with one ear up.... Apparently general consensus is, if you want your pups ears to stand up (if normal for the breed) it is recommended you dont play with them when they are puppies (the ears, not the puppy ). So her logic when ears go up and you want them down is to massage them a few times a day using glycerin, and this should bring them back down again. You could try this as a temporary solution until you work out how to glue...it can't hurt. Good Luck!!

Personally, I'd keep a close eye on it. If it gets worse, changes colour or her behaviour changes...straight to the vet. An infection in that area would be most unpleasant!

Thanks guys ;) Rhi & Jak...It may be a microwave thing, I zap pups mince and rice for 10s to take the chill from the fridge off it and then mix it in with his dry food. Although, I use the microwave at other times and he doesn't bat an eyelid! I've always ignored the barking from the start, this morning I'm ashamed to say I got impatient and yelled sit, it worked for 5-6 s ;) I guess I'll combine distraction and persistence. I'm just amazed he knows specifically its his dinner I'm preparing...I usually try to disguise it by preparing while I'm cooking our own dinner - the food is in the same cupboards and everything, yet he barks as soon as I start on his....spooky - or food obsessed breed, most likely both!
-
Hi again Lately my pup barks everytime I am getting his dinner. The bowl is up on the bench (removed after previous mealtime) and I go to put his food in and he starts barking. I'm sure its just a "hurry up thats my dinner" bark but I'm not a fan... When he barks I ignore him until he is calm, take the food off the bench and walk to his dinner spot and then make him sit before I put the food down. BUT despite doing this everyday he hasn't stopped barking while I'm preparing the food. Does anyone know what he's up to? And also how to stop it? Is it just persistance? I tried getting OH to distract him while I prepare the food to stop the kerfuffle but despite being 2 rooms away he knew what I was doing and came scampering into the room barking loudly...any ideas would be much appreciated ;)

Hi Tim, It really depends on what you plan to do permanently. We put our pup in a bed on our bedroom floor BUT we are happy to have him in our room always. It certainly worked well for us as pup whimpered for 5 mins and when no one answered he nodded off, comforted no doubt by OH's snoring. I suggest you maintain consistency, so if you have a place you want him to sleep, start him in there. You may have a few sleepless nights to start with, but wait it out and it will all be fine. If he does nodd off and you hear whining through the night, you are going to have to take him to the toilet. No playing or conforting at this time though or you will have to go through the whole bed time ritual again...just toilet, treat for correct response and back to bed. If you want to make pup extra comfy if he is sleeping away from you try a snuggle puppy. They are a toy with a heat pack and a battery operated heart beat...the pups feel like they are still sleeping with their mum or their littermates and are much calmer....or you could wrap an old ticking clock up in a blanket and place it in the crate if you are looking for a cheaper option. Good luck and enjoy your pup!!

Hi guys, I am beginning to get to know my new little pup quite well now...well so I should we spent our whole lives side by side practically! Anyway, this is going to sound crazy, but at about 7.15 every morning he gets the hiccups for about 10 minutes, I could almost set my watch by it! Should I be worried about this, is it a sign of bad health? He hasn't eaten when it happens he is just snuggled on the bed for morning cuddles...could it just be excitement that his human is waking up for a day of fun? Just thought I should check in case it is bad for him...if its not thats great, I think its adorable

Hi Angelblaze, if she is going everywhere and anywhere could it be that she is sooo excited to have you home that she doesn't want to leave the house in case you're gone again so just does her business wherever she is at the time? I'm no expert but maybe you could contain her within your sight range when you have stuff to do so that if she is going to go you can shift her outside. Its almost impossible to make changes if you cant catch her in the act. Also if you take her every hour or so and she doesn't go, I'd keep trying every 15 mins after that until she does. It's a pain going so often but it certainly does stop weeing in the house She has a one room den all day and then when the whole house is opened up to her it perhaps becomes a little bit confusing. My pup is 11 weeks and he is always confined to the same area as me if I cant watch him like a hawk...e.g. dinner time. Sure enough, if he suddenly becomes quiet or tries to leave the confined area he usually needs to wee, works like a charm. Good Luck! I hope this helps a little.

Horror First Night - 8 Week Old Ridgeback Puppy
schnauzer_luv replied to Miss Monster's topic in Puppy Chat
Ahahhahahaa, I just spat out my coffee that was so funny That is funny! Im never far away from my pups toilet because he has a pet loo inside. For the first couple of days I would take him there and he would "get busy" then get tonnes of praise...this is his 4th day with us and he is now going by himself but afterwards will come and take me to the loo to show me what he's been up to and then looks at me expectantly for hugs -

Im not sure glen 20 will do it. If it contains ammonia it definitely wont. You can get some products from pet stores specifically designed for eliminating the urine odour...or if you're feeling home makerish 50/50 white vinegar and water solution sprayed on the spot and blotted up will do it. -

Thats fair enough....for some magical mystical reason our pup came pretty much toilet trained. He hates going anywhere near his "den" so if he gets up suddenly and bolts toward the door we put him straight on the loo...or he is heading to it himself. Im no expert here but I would suggest trying to stop him before he starts going...if he sniffs, circles, scratches at the ground or suddenly wanders away from you take him outside...if he does pee outside go wild with excitement and affection, once you can get his scent out there it will be much easier. Also make sure you've gotten rid of his smell inside, he may be holding out for that spot because he can still smell its "his". Next time he pees on the tiles, wipe it up with paper towel and put it outside, its one way of getting his scent outside which is a start. Next time you take him outside take him to the spot where the paper towel is and wait it out. -
I have been training Mazza a little bit today. I initially started with dry treats but it was taking about 3 mins for him to chew it and then the stream of concentration was lost. At lunchtime I boiled some chicken breast and broke it up into small pieces...he sat on command 5 times for chicken!!! I think its a combination of the fact that its soft and easy to guzzle down and that for some reason dogs lurve chicken Saying that, I was only giving him the tiniest bit at a time, he probably ate 2 tablespoons worth altogether and I will subtract that portion of mince from his dinner tonight. If you're worried about scud becoming addicted to treats than chicken isnt a bad way to go if its boiled IMO...its not fatty atleast.

Horror First Night - 8 Week Old Ridgeback Puppy
schnauzer_luv replied to Miss Monster's topic in Puppy Chat
I am no expert at this and Im truly sorry to hear the problem your experiencing but what seems to be working for us is warmth and noise. Our pup is in our room with us (no crate) and isnt allowed on the bed but doesnt seem to mind because he can hear us (OH snores like a trooper) and has a snuggle puppy plus our body warmth in the room. If OH stops snoring pup wakes up...so I get two sets of snoring at a time or a puppy who is awake...maybe you should put a recording of snoring on repeat?? I really hope things pick up soon, you must be exhausted! -
Thanks everyone....I might do a wait and see. Perhaps the fact that he will be primarily using a pet loo when he comes home will result in him squatting anyway...there really isnt anything for him to cock his leg at. I'll chat to the breeder and the vet when he gets his 2nd vacc re desexing and move on from there. Thanks for the tree advice showdog, I always shake my head at that too, there is a big difference between the dog relieving itself during a walk and scent marking every vertical object it passes IMO :D I will post some pics of my lil one when he arrives. Cheers!
