  1. I bought a mars comb and that is fabulous, they are not cheap (around $70)but they save you heaps in the long run....i dont know what brand our slicker brush is but i remember it cost about $50, but it has lasted really well and the dog loves it. We also have a hand mitt by the same people and that is fab after using the other brushes to get any loose fur and to smooth the coat out.
  2. Some friends of mine have a georgeous golden retriever, they purchased her from a breeder and paid a lot of money for her. When my friends asked the breeder about up keep of the coat they were told brush once a month and a bath once a year.....now today we went to the beach together it is 32c here in Adelaide and my dogs run amock in the sea weed and in the water...thier dog stayed on the short leash the whole time and she really smells bad....she could have really done with a run in the water then a good bath....i suggested she come back to our place and i would wash all the dogs here and she had a fit...telling me she couldn't possibly wash her dog....that the dogs bath was usually in december and she would ruin the coat if she washed it anymore. Has any one ever heard of this before????
  3. Ok my puppies in order of age Pepsi 7 (photo wont up load will try again) Candy 2 Flash 1
  4. She didn't see our regular vet, she seen a guy who was filling in for him, so he could take some time off. When my vet gets back i will take her back and see what he thinks. I dont think there is anything wrong with her hearing personally, if she is in her kennel and i open the fridge, she is there. same as when i pick up the food bowls, they are no where to be seen, usually up stairs and she is usually the first at my feet. I think she was just being beligerent with the vet. I know her sight is going becasue if we move things she will often bump into them.... so we dont move things any more!! Her health is otherwise very good, she loves her walks and tumbling around with our other dogs, We have gone back to basic training, ( not a bad thing when you have a house full of puppies) switched back to walking her in a gentle leader. she seems very happy... and when that changes i will reassess her future.
  5. Good news... she slept all afternoon and all night but she is like a four pawed eating machine this morning. She has had a bowl of puppy milk, a bowl of porriage and some dry food soaked in hot water. She also went after one of our older dogs breakfast. We are trying to watch what she eats so if she gets an upset tummy we have some idea what it was. she is a very active little dog, when we got up around 6 am she was bouncing around and wagging her little tail, she is asleep again now.
  6. Hi all, today we had a rescue passed onto us from our vet, she is a JRT and she weighs around 400 grams, the vet places her age somewhere about the 4 week mark. She has had a really tough day, when the vet got her she was infested with fleas, the vets surgery has given her a flea bath and treated her with advance, she has very little fur left and no visable fleas. the biggest problem i have is she doesn't want to eat, we have offered milk replacement in a bottle, puppy porriage, royal canin puppy that has been soaked in hot water and she is not interested. At the moment she is asleep in a box by me feet but if any one else has come up against this i would love to know how you dealt with it. thank you
  7. We have just come home from the vet... pepsi has significant hearing loss and is loosing her sight. she has cateracts, the vet has advised me to consider putting her to sleep. Something i do not want to do she is still a young dog. She was taken from her mum at just 4 weeks and had a really tough start in life, now at 7 i dont want to let her down. I suppose these are the things that puppy farmers dont think about, what happens to them in middle age.
  8. thanks erny, i never thought about it but we have had my sisters 2 staffys here and they are not well behaved when they eat, maybe she has leanrt it from them. i will keep an eye on her and see how it goes.... she has also become very clingy ie she hates it if she cant follow me everywhere, which i have read can be an early sign of dementia.
  9. Our poodle cross has always been an excellent dog, she did very well at obedience, and she has always been a joy to train and handle. However in the last few days she has become very temperamental, she is 7, and in very good health. She will not heal, will only sit if bribed and she has begun to steal food off of our other dogs and off of the kitchen bench or table. We have been rescuing dogs for 9 yrs and there have always been dogs coming and going, we have more permanent dogs than we have ever had before but the rules have not changed. Any ideas? thank you
  10. Congratulations on your puppies, i am lucky becasue i work from home i can spend all day with my dogs but what you are trying sounds like you are making a break through, just remember puppy steps. Every time we have a big storm, thunder or fire works our dogs forget a little bit of thier training and we get accidents on the floor. They dont mean to, but they are frightened. There are some fabulous people here on DOL who are always happy to help out. You will find that once you start pre school and then training that everything will become a lot easier. Persevere and you will be rewarded with all the love and affection you can handle. Good Luck.
  11. We have always let our dogs sleep in our bedroom with us, our dogs are not allowed on the bed but they have thier own beds along one wall of our bedroom. When they are really little my OH will put them in a box closer to our bed so if they wake up in the night he can comfort them without having to get up.
  12. i love the way my poodle cross feels after a good going over with the slicker brush, i usually use the mars comb first the strip some of the under coat then give it a good going over with the slicker brush.
  13. preen carpet shot works well, we have our carpet cleaned every 6 months by a professional but for little messes in between. i have never tried the vinegar but i will next time.
  14. Why does Pal smell so bad? I have a situation where a lady whos lost dog ended up with me overnight until she could get her son to pick it up has given me 2 slabs of Pal as a thank you. I opened one can, thinking our older dogs could have Pal and started retching.....it smells terrible.....to the point it didn't give it to the dogs.
  15. Our house has picked up canine cough, does any one have any tips on how to make it pass quicker? Our dogs are all staying inside, no walks to the dog park, we are not showing my sisters dogs at the royal show, all but one of the dogs is fully immunised, the other one's vacinations are up to date but at 16 weeks is the worst hit my the virus. our vet has suggested i keep them warm, have plenty of water and food available and ride it out. Does any one have any other suggestions? thank you in advance
  16. We did the purina challenge and we got great results, we only had 2 dogs then but our poodle cross has a lovely glossy coat and nice firm poos, our jack russell was allergic to something in royal canin so she eneded up on purina, we haven't had any problems. We also feed bucket o beef, the dogs love thier cooked foods and at around $3 a kg it is cheap and home delviered!
  17. one of our dogs gets a seasonal hayfever type of thing, after a few trips to the vet we determined that it is nothing more serious than the sniffles..... it is a bit gross but it clears up by itself.
  18. it doesn't matter what you do they always find a way to get grubby, especially if you are in a hurry. a friend of mine uses talcum powder to get the dirt out, i dont know if it works but she swears by it.
  19. We do the 12 month thing unless something goes wrong. If you have the feeling something is off i might take them to the vet.
  20. Has any one ever seen or heard of human hair dye on a dog? i just picked up a rescue that was coloured copper red and had an earing! The owner was reported to the RSPCA, however there is little they can do becasue the dog had food, shelter and water. She was taken to the vet becasue her earring was infected, and ended up coming to stay with me until a poodle rescuer could come and get her. What is this world coming to?
  21. wow he has already come a huge way.... you should be proud of how far he has come. my dad has suggested paw paw ointment will help it re grow as well, i am fortunate i have never seen this before but he has and said even if the paw paw doens't help the hair it will help the skin from drying out and make the dog less likely to be iritated.
  22. Jack Russells are great dogs, they have a lot of evergy and they can be very head strong, however having said that with enough time you will have a great dog. Jack russells can be trained, it is not that easy but if you have the time it is well worth it. i have 2 jack russells and i wouldn't trade either of them for anything. They are loyal, friendly and fabulous fun.
