Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
Kissindra replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
didn't someone have a "no longer matches the new carpet/furniture" surrender last year? There was a rescue returned because the husband was having "panic attacks" because the dog did kick backs on the grass after peeing! That one I think I'll always remember! -
Cavalier Groomer Brisbane Northside.
Kissindra replied to pete cassidy's topic in General Dog Discussion
I believe the groomers Dogues Of Ascot have experience with Cavaliers, you'd have to ring to double check but I do know one of the vets at the attached clinic breeds cavaliers so it is likely. They have a good reputation there from what I've heard. -
when we got Boo his breeder mentioned that we'd learn not to wear black....unfortunately we wear black almost exclusively and so we just deal with looking like hairballs The tumble weeds of hair are noticeably larger now we are in a house with no carpet, I swept today and there were huge clumps of pet hair under the bed and in the corners, you'd think they'd be bald with the amount of hair I found!

At the moment we have two adult Cavalier, a Great Dane puppy and two adult cats....everything is covered in fur, EVERYTHING and I couldn't tell you which one is the biggest culprit but you do kind of learn to live with it....either that or vacuum every day, and sod that really

Thank God Dogs Doesn't Hold Grudges Because...
Kissindra replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
oh dear, had to find this thread again - we've just moved and I can't find anything, but it's cold tonight so I tried in vain to find the dog coats - poor buggers, I *did* however find the dog costumes so Boo is currently dressed as a Japanese drummer, Luna is a Halloween pumpkin and Atticus...well, you see, Dane puppies grow so quickly, we thought we'd just buy a few sizes larger than he is now to leave room to grow....so he has on a coat far too big for him with a hair-tie gathering the loose fabric around his neck while the rest flaps along behind him We are SO not fashionable tonight! -

Are Dogs More Intelligent Than People?
Kissindra replied to furballs's topic in General Dog Discussion
what I think on reading this is sadness that you see no level of good in people to compare, I do and I've seen the worst of us to but my goodness the best of us outshines it in every way, every day....that and perhaps I've spent more time watching Animal Planet than you because rape, murder and assault are no strangers to the animal kingdom! -
dogs need things to occupy themselves, my personal preference is to get at least one of the following types of toy: rope toy soft toy chew toy/teething toy brain teaser - like treat balls ect. something they have to work at for a reward noisy toy ball or frisbee tug toy some toys are dual purpose and your dog probably wont be interested in all of them, but you can work out what they like and get more of the same/similar. Some things you don't need to buy as giving them a bone or long lasting treat has the same purpose. I like to buy toys of good quality made specificly for dogs but I also make use of around the house stuff, empty plastic bottles, empty cardboard boxes ect. which I can put treats in. Hiding treats under bowls or in the yard or in a digging pit. Some toys you do need to supervise, and dogs have gotten their jaw stuck in kongs when left along with them so for me that is a supervise only toy. Have to say though that some dogs wont be interested in anything you can buy them, a palm frond, a plastic pot or a cardboard box ect. might be what attracts them, but certainly with a pup I think it's a good investment to try out different toys and build on what they like because there are some fantastic things out there and an occupied canine is a less destructive canine and a happier canine!

if you haven't already try posting in the training sub forum

thankfully no! We get a lot of sirens being this close to a hospital. Atticus had a few howl-y moments when he first came home and was not allowed to sleep on the bed, the description "dying baby walrus" just about covers the sound EFS

I pointed to the process....not the quality. The quality is decided on longevity & usefulness of what is published. Marked by numbers of citations. It also depends on the level of the journals. There's a gradation of journal types & prestige. Ranging from those with high international reputations thro' to some that are little more than in-house journals to get work 'published. So it will be interesting to read the actual article in the actual journal....& follow any citations. What was it about this journal that leads you to talk about an 'awful lot of crap' in this context? I'm interested why the general media report on this particular article....scarcely a few lines in length....raised your ire??? By the way.....it's not a question of my 'faith'.....it's a question of occupation. 'Faith' seems a strange word to use when talking about science.....where the default position is scepticism. oh terribly sorry, you see this "This study has made it to the level where it'll be published in a peer-reviewed journal. That means its method & findings had to pass extensive independent scrutiny." did rather sound to me like an assumption of quality at that level. data sources cited and the assumption of accurate theoretical basis of those lovely percentage studies do tend to suggest a high probability of skewed findings. I'd have to look at the equivalent human studies to determine if it is relevant, perhaps I would find them equally shoddy sounding, but frankly I can't be arsed. As to why it raised my ire, well I'm afraid that is rather personal but I believe I can share that it is responsible for giving Spotty a nasty wedgie in a dark alley and stealing Sheridan's prized thimble collection - including the rare one with a badger playing poker with a lemming....tsk tsk tsk

Do You Go Out Of Your Way To Give Your Dogs Alone Time?

I didn't with Boo and it led to problems, he's made a heck of a lot of progress but I wont be making the same mistake with Atticus! -

popsicle - I'll let you borrow Trixie, she is not remotely shy about letting us know it is "food-o'clock" and will happily push the point home if we are being tardy in serving her -

Kissindra replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
at our old house both the cats and Boo had on occasion been shut in the walk in pantry accidentally, having followed me in without my knowing. We have a cat tunnel that is made out of crinkly fabric and when they are playing in it it sounds just like someone riffling through plastic bags - I've often mistakenly come running, calling out to the dogs in the "what are you doing" tone of voice only to find it's just the cats playing -
I use cream cheese, a bit of olive oil and honey for icing

Mita your faith in the establishment does you credit but quite frankly and awful lot of pap gets published in peer reviewed journals and it is not what I would call a reasonable indication of the worth of findings.
