Obedience Club/training Knox / Se Melbourne Area
Paulp replied to Snowball's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Depending on where you are Berwick or Croydon may also be options. Both clubs use positive training methods. Berwick starts up again on the first Saturday of February. There is also a club that trains at Belgrave but I don't know much about them. Too early in the morning, I misread your title, thought you were asking about knox , not that you are in knox. We do have a number of handlers at Berwick from that far afield and Croydon is probably a similar distance so they are alternatives to Knox. -
Flyball Team Sunshine Coast Qld
Paulp replied to blackborder's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Good luck with the team. Do you have team colours yet? If you go navy and gold and ever meet Berwick at the nationals it could be confusing as our motto is the same a your name! We'll get to see who is faster and more furious -
The Rogz frisbee may be better but Ebon just loves his Kong, I have other frisbees and they just don't have the same attraction for him.
-
Yes I do have a problem, he won't swap if he won't go for the ball in the first place!
-
Is there something that you play with at home that she really loves to grab a hold of? When I first started flyball with my dog I had a similar problem, he just didn't want to give the ball back. At home his favourite toy was a kong frisbee so I bought that to training and problem solved, he will take the frisbee (now known as the donut as he has torn the middle out of the "indestructible" kong) over a ball anyday to the extent that I have created a monster and the frisbee was banned by our captain at the last comp as he decided he didn't want to go for the ball at all!

When my lab was about 5 months old I got him a new cushion to sleep on and he suddenly starting humping it. We thought it was hilarious and would laugh at him and he seemed to stop it but then one day I busted him doing it when he thought we weren't around, it was as if he was embarassed when we laughed at him! Then he entered a destructive phase and the cushion got destroyed and I've never caught him humping anything aver again. That was the only thing he ever seemed to hump and we assumed he just enjoyed the nice velour feel of it.

I'm not sure where I got them from. They either were the straps from some older harnesses I had or I bought them seperately. They are made from seatbelt type webbing with a heavy bulldog clip at one end for clipping to the harness and a metal clip at the other which is intended to be inserted in the seatbelt buckle but I use a mountaineering typ clip to secure it to the child restraint bolt. It is much stronger than a leash and you can adjust its length.
-
The black dog harness is actually quite easy to use and I wouldn't worry too much about the webbing being too thin, it is very strong. The buckle that holds it all together is metal and very strong. I have always hated the seatbelt attachments as they allow too much give. I use a short strap to secure the harness to the child seat bolt on the rear parcel shelf. Because the parcel shelf is up relatively high the strap stays above the dogs back and doesn't get under its feet as it moves about and there is no give, when the dog reaches the limit of its movement, it stops (ie can't wiggle its way in between the front seats). If you want to make the sling more stable get a couple of those foam rubber camping mats and trim them so that they fit snugly between the back of the front seat and the rear seat, gives a fairly flat surface that doesn't dip into the footwell.
-
Two very energetic labradors (when they are not lying around doinf stuff all). Our backyard would be around 300-350m2 and runs the length of the house and around behind it so the doggies have plenty of length to build up lots of speed when they zoom. The dogs are out there all day when we are not home and when they get a bit too willing inside the house they get put out for a spell.
-
My 2 labradors (one 32kgs, the other 24kgs) go through an 18kg bag of active advance in about 45 days and 2-3 chuck bones a week so that averages out to about $3-3.50 a day.

The flyball demo is still on ( an call went out for available dogs the other day) but it will probably be a bit restricted on numbers as there is a comp on the same day at Berwick. The Berwick comp is a limited entry competition so there should still be some team dogs available and it is always a good opportunity to run new dogs.
-
I bought a cheap back seat sling then cut up a couple of those foam rubber camping mats to fit between the backs of the front seats and the rear seat and between the arm rests on either door. Placed on top of the sling this gives a nice firm and relatively flat surface for the dogs to be on. I then cut a piece of rubber backed marine carpet (cut a bit oversized so the edges are curled up) to go over this which gives a nice non slip, waterproof and durable surface. I harness my 2 labs with black dog harnesses belted to the anchor bolt on the rear parcel shelf and adjusted so that they cant quite get to the front seats.

Quick Question About Training In Drive
Paulp replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't think Eddie has a concept of embarassment, you should of seen his 5 minute pee right in front of the "grandstand" at the Dandenong flyball comp! -
World Dog Games On Ch 7 Right Now
Paulp replied to shoemonster's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Go Moses, he's not dumb, why jump when there is a perfectly good ramp Those dancing dogs have some great crowd pleasing tricks to bring to the diving. Those flyball dogs were very fast, whoever was running the finish dog for the hellfire hounds judged two beautiful crosses. Would have been nice to know what the times were. Did Shaun like the commentators Shoemonster? -
If you like coffee you will like T'keilor, they take their own espresso coffee machine to the comps. They even had a chrissie tree and decorations in their marquee at the last comp. If you join up ask someone there about the silly black lab in the opposition team in their last race of the day at the Santa Ball comp.......

Sometimes in class we have a dog that won't follow the treat to the ground and the handler keeps trying over and over without success. Instead of immediately trying again I get the handler to take the treat to the ground and then wait with the treat in hand on the ground (held so the dog can't get it out until you release it of course!). Most dogs will eventually drop down if the treat doesn't keep coming back up, you just have to outwait them. At first don't give the command until after they have dropped then do it immediately release the treat and praise. When they get the idea that they are not getting the treat until they do it then start giving the command as you initiate the drop.

I am a trainee instructor at my club and the way we are learning to go about it is to break up the heel work with other aspects of training (eg focus, socialisation, recalls, even games) depending on what level is being taught. There is still a fair bit of heel work. especially at the higher levels where you start teaching trial standard, but we try not to do too much at a time.

Is the official photographer going to make her photos available anywhere? The web address supplied by Norwest (www.tammywatts.net) doesn't seem to exist. -
2009 Australian Flyball Championships
Paulp replied to wherezaball's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
41 teams all up across 8 divisions and 243 races over 2 days...the biggest flyball competition ever held in Australia... With 8 divisions I imagine that the seed times in each division are quite tight so there should be close competition within each division. It's mine and Ebons first natiuonals and I can hardly wait,....... as long as the silly so and so doesn't get two yellow cards on Saturday morning! -

A What Age Did Your Dog First Compete
Paulp replied to nickojoy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He certainly does! Ebons first flyball comp was just before his second b'day. I would have started him earlier but I was mistaken about what age he could start flyball. -
We had a lady join up with a shiba inu puppy this month. I took them in the off-lead areas to teach off lead recalls and it was great.
