 You made me laugh out loud with your description and then slinking off in embarrassment. You are a brave woman, and it is good to have all the facts Sorry, this post is not helpful

With my dogs, i am the leader and the dominant one so they are not allowed to be dominant to each other as there is no need. So basically, i am the leader and they are the rest of the pack. No assertions of dominance are allowed and no aggression ever, under any circumstance. It works for us. I would be interested in hearing others opinions though and what works for them.

Herding Training 11th March - Victoria
jesomil replied to whatevah's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know this is a little off topic but i didnt think it was worth starting another thread over as the RSPCA day had been discussed in here. Did anyone else end up going? We went and as we got there they announced Leo who is an aussie shepherd running the agility course. I thought i had heard that name before so i watched beautiful Leo have his run. I recognised him from the pics on here. Well done Leopuppy, he is a beautiful dog. It was a great day ! -
There are many ways of starting dogs working stock, so this is what i would suggest and others will probably suggest their ways. It depends a bit upon how much instinct your dog has for working but you can bring it out in some dogs. I would start giving her a purpose instead of her just running in circles. You should start moving in a straight line and get her to arc back and forth behind the ducks, getting her to bring them to you. When you reach the side, you turn around and walk back the other way. This is balancing, which means that she is always on the other side of the stock. Does she do this naturally at all? I would not be putting sides on her till she was bringing the ducks to you. I would also be teaching her to recall off the ducks and also to sit when she is working them. Once she can balance nicely, sit and come, i would then start teaching side commands. Hope this helps.

Wow, well done !!! You must be thrilled !! By the way, do you only need 2 passes for the title? (I havent trialled since these new classes started, so i dont know what the rules are)

I have a naughty little 6 month old who is just starting training. Lots of fun. There were a couple of Borders at the yard trial i went to last weekend and they went well. -

Hi Superminty, Cash was great. He is an amazing looking dog. I have never seen such a huge Kelpie. I think my dog could have walked under him . Was it the first backing Aussie, or the first tunnelling under Aussie Its really great fun. I have found the people involved to be extremely helpful and friendly which makes it all the more fun. You will have to let us know how you go. -

Hi guys, Glad you all had a great day, i enjoyed it too. It was great watching other people and seeing the different styles breeds have of working. It was great meeting Wagalot, Superminty and CTD. Your dogs are all beautiful. I dont know why videoing wasnt allowed * warning brag alert * Well, i just have to brag as i am soooooooo proud of my boy. The next day we went in a yard trial. It was quite hard as the encourage level had to do the same course as the novice and open just with one gate removed. It was great and we loved the challenge!! My dog worked like a pro and ended up coming equal first so there was a run off and we won on 95 points!!!! I was so on top of the world and still am. I just had to share ;) -
Who Often Do You Train And For How Long?
jesomil replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Pup - about 8 weeks old, 1-2 mins training a couple of times per week. This gradually builds to a few minutes everyday. Adult - 10 - 15mins solid training most days sometimes twice a day. Dogs are finished on a good note and still very keen for more. But this is only talking about training sessions not sessions where the dog is simply working doing what it has been previously taught. -

I reckon we would have been notified before now if it was going to be cancelled. It just means in the hottest part of the day there will be more talking and less working of dogs. -
Interesting question as i know many people differ on ideas with this one. I personally enter a trial when i know we will have a good chance of placing, not before. The trainer who started me in trials said to me years ago, never enter till you know you can win. I dont care about winning or losing and my dogs are my beloved kids whatever the outcome, but i will only go in once i know they will be great. I dont see the point of trialling when your dog is not up to scratch as practise should be done away from the trialling ground, not in the ring. Thats why clubs run mock trials.

Dogs 'burning Out' In Training
jesomil replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
With my first trialling dog, she had her CD at 1yr then her CDX 6 months later. I waited for her to be at a high level and she placed with every pass. I trained her basically from the day i got her and spent alot of time with her. I had alot of spare time back then . I think it has alot to do with the dog and the trainer/ methods used. I used completely fun training and didnt put any kind of pressure on her till before we started trialling. She lived for her training as she got food and toys etc. There was certainly no burn out and she was still as eager to learn when she was 10. I did a heck of a lot with this dog - obedience, agility, flyball, tracking, schutzund, PAT, trick training and even dabbled in a bit of herding with her. I dont think it would be possible to have burn out with fun training but i think you could quite easily burn out a pup applying too much pressure or using harsh methods. You have to work at the individual dogs pace and stay within the capabilities of the handler. -

Thats fantasic, several DOLers going. Wagalot, you will be easy to pick out with an Aussie. I will have a red and tan Kelpie and so will just about everyone else. We will just have to be courageous and walk up to people and ask if they are from DOL so we know who everyone is. -

Multiple Dogs Misbehaving
jesomil replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had an interesting thing happen at the park yesterday with my two. Yesterday, the pup was running around when this other dog took after her. She started to run full pelt as she became scared. My adult saw her becoming distressed and from a fair distance, sprinted over to her and then shoulder slammed this other dog so it fell and rolled over (no harm done). He then stood over it for a few seconds, wagged his tail and walked away. It was amazing as he completely aviods conflict at all times and never behaves like this with other dogs. It was as if he was saying, hey, back off, she is just a pup, cant you see she is distressed. He was amazing. He took a while to warm to this pup after loosing his best friend last year, but now he adores her and wont let her out of his sight. I love watching multiple dogs interact. -
Warragul is for all sheepdogs regardless of whether they actually work for a living or not.

I have nothing to add but I am so sorry that you lost your little sheepdog

Wow, old thread from 18 months ago!! Did anything ever happen with the new idea??

Does anyone know anything about the Parvac vaccination? I assume it only covers parvovirus? Is it short acting? Why is it used instead of the usual vaccines? If a pup has only had parvac, does it then need to have the C5/C3 and booster to cover everything else? Thanks.

Wow, i have never seen it used that hard before. I called it the poly pipe toss because thats the best description i could think of for the manner in which it is thrown. Greg Prince only tosses it. That person must have been doing some serious throwing. I generally cant throw it the distance i need to and it generally doesnt end up in the right place as i am a bit unco with my throwing but there is definately no way a dog could be injured by it.

My dog was taught the cast by leaving him in a stay then walking half way between him and the stock. I then sent him and would step towards him to encourage him to arc out. Then we got to the stage where i would lob my poly pipe at the area i didnt want him to be if he cut in. That worked wonders. Greg Prince showed us how to use the poly pipe toss. Has anyone else used this? Now he does a lovely wide arc but i still use OUT if he gets a bit enthusiastic and tries to cut in. He is a natural forceful, in close dog, so we had to work quite hard on getting him out. I am hoping maturity will settle him also. Thats great that you have booked in, its going to be a great day!!You will be easy to spot . You have to meet a few working line Kelpies. They all look completely different as they have been bred for work not looks. Unlike the show bred dogs which are all bred to a standard and look the same the working dogs come in short/tall, short haired/semi long haired, leggy/stocky ugly/pretty etc etc etc.
