Sallson has beagles Welsh Pembroke Corgis and Maremma sheep dog - Its listed under beagles only on your site so you can add the other two if you like. -
I thought the advice given by poodle fan was pretty good even though you have now added some things to clarify. You cant train a pup to do anything if you arent there on the spot to watch it and if you are not consistent. If you cant watch it all the time you can try puppy training mats which you place near the door the pup will need to go out to do a wee. These have a scent which attracts the pup to the mat and then when the pup is using the mat for a while if you take it away the pup will go to the spot each time which can clue you as to when it wants to wee. I dont know how the pup is getting outside but if you are not taking it out on lead so it knows how to get there again and if you dont have a way for the pup to come and go when it wants it makes it all a bit harder. Also you need to stand out there with it until it does a wee before you come back in so you can see that it goes and reward it when it does. If you ever let it back in because its cried to do so it will be telling you what to do for ever. Wait until it stops crying before you let it in.

This is a good start for looking at Aloe for immunity [note the links too at the bottom of the page ] http://health.centreforce.com/health/aloe.html 22kg dog start with 10 mils twice per day for 2 weeks then 5 mils twice per day should do the trick. Wont do any harm any way. Just remember all Aloe juice isnt equal - you need board certified.
-
Raw chicken wings have the right ratio of all of the big minerals and most of the vitamins a growing dog needs .The Board certified Aloe has every amino acid - both essential and non essential and over 100 other nutrients including and most importantly a particular glyconutrient which is the best known and is used to increase the immune system . Its the most bio available in Aloe and is used for treating all immune system reactions [which is what skin conditions are caused by] including aids. The childrens multi vitamin is more likely to be what it says it is on the label without fillers and presevatives as the controls and regs on production of animal meds is less stringent than those on human products. I would suggest that it may be a good idea for you to research the life cycle of the heartworm and the risk factors for your area and reconsider your use of them and possible alternatives while ever your dog is showing these smptoms at least.

I now feed a chicken frame in the morning with a 2x4 dog bikkie when I go to work, then raw and kibble at night. From what you're saying, I would be better to change this around to put the frame with the raw at night, and feed the kibble in the morning (with the bikkie)? yep, just swap it around. the dog wont care. Sorry I didnt see this but I agree with crysti_lei

Theoretically its not real posh because of the time each food takes to move through the digestive tract. Raw meat is out of there much quicker normally than commercial food so any bacteria doesnt get time to brew and cause problems - remember that a dog's digestive tract is shorter than a human's and this [ in the main ] is why they dont suffer the same fate as we do if we eat this much bacteria. When its combined with commercial the risk is that it will stay in the gut longer and therefore potentially cause a problem where it wouldnt if its eaten as it would be in the wild.

If this were my dog - I would feed him nothing else other than raw chicken wings, board certified Aloe Vera Juice,a childs vitamin pill daily for 4 weeks. Under no condition would I feed him any commercial dog foods. I would take him off all meds including and especially heartworm meds,I would take a good look at everything in his life and environment which may cause him stress. No vaccinations. So consider the temperature, draughts, changes in his life etc. I would wash him in nothing else but human baby shampoo (and only if really needed) with a few drops of Lavender oil and rinse him with a cup of Apple cidar vinegar per 4 litres. If his skin appears inflamed I would apply Aloe Vera Gel several times per day. No matter what the reaction to this appeared to be I would stick with this and then reassess at the end of the 4 week period. I would expect that for the first 2 weeks he may appear to get a little worse as he de - toxifies. I would also document everything that is able to be noted in a journal daily. Julie

I can get you one .We are putting together kits which include these for the MDBA's next fundraiser. Ill just look up the price for you. Julie

I 100% agree with this. The thing to remember when feeding a raw diet is that while it involves changing what you feed, it more than anything involves changing HOW YOU THINK about feeding. Raw diets are NOT about recipes. They are not one size fits all or follow the plan on the bag type diets. Instead they involve a set of principles on which you can base how you feed your dogs. You need to understand the principles first as they will guide everything you do. I fully understand that some people need their hand held a lot more than that. It can take time to change the way you think about how you feed and it is not always easy (although reading at least one book and following the principles in it is a good way to start). But in the end, when it comes to a raw diet, you HAVE to do the reading and understand WHY you are feeding like that as well as knowing the types of things you can feed. Well said. Because we have been educated by dog food companies we stress more over feeding our dogs than we do about feeding our kids. How much do we feed our dogs? Some people stress like mad over this and they want a set amount per weight and feel they cant do this until they have the formula. So we give them a formula but is not really the formula because the formula doesnt really exist because every dog is different and needs its own formula. How much do we feed a 5 year old child ? Ive had 8 kids, 2 step kids, a couple of foster kids and 13 grand kids and I couldn't tell you how much a 5 year old eats as a percentage of their body weight. Ive got an 11 year old now who I think is a bottomless pit and Ive no idea how much he eats in a day . How much per percentae of your bodyy weight did you eat today? You know people at different life stages need different energy levels but we want a formula for dogs Then we worry that we havent got everything they need covered so we want recipes and plans which we want to stick to rigidly to be sure we're doing the right thing yet we know we cant do that for a child or for us - we know we have to feed them variety ,lots of different foods in small amounts . If I had one recipe I fed myself and my kids I know its a stupid thing to do but yet some people feed the same food or recipe every single feed because they think this way they can give them every thing they need every time. The biggest problem that you get when ever you start talking about this is that some people advise others and they dont have it all themselves. There's an article coming up in the MDBA newsletter this month re some of the mistakes people make in feeding BARF instigated by some threads here on dogz where people are sure they have it right. We also have courses on Feeding the family Dog and Advanced Canine Nutrition.

A digital thermometer is only around $10 sometimes less. With some Vaseline on it they don’t even feel the thing in their anus and its something that you need to get the dog a bit used to in case its stressed and you need to do it without causing more stress. Get one that beeps when is ready. Best way with most issues is to know what’s normal .Your dogs Temp will be lowest early morning and up to a degree higher in latte afternoon. It’s unaffected by weather unless he's so cold he's shivering or he has just exercised in hot weather. To get a base line, record the temp morning, midday and late afternoon, for a week then average the reading for each time of day. Exercise causes the temp to rise and it can take up to 2 hours to normalise again to be sure you take the temp every 15 mins to see if its due to illness or exercise. Exercise it will slowly come down - illness it will stay constant or rise. It’s a good idea to have 2 thermometers so if you get a high with one you can check that the thermometer isn’t wrong. You need to know and record what a normal heart rate is Pulse rate at rest - young dogs 110 - 120 bpm, large breed adult 60-80 bpm, small breed adult 80 - 120 bpm Respiratory rate is 30 to 80 breaths per minute [ slower for large faster for small] you want to see no effort; breathing slow in normal breaths. Gum colour - bubble gum pink. Capillary refill time - 1 to 2 seconds - faster means the blood pressure is up probably due to exercise, anxiety or excitement. Slow - illness poisoning or shock. Pull up your dog's lip and look at his gums. Place your index finger firmly against the gums so that they appear white. Remove your finger and see how quickly the blood returns to the gums (they will become pink in that area again). This is called capillary refill time. If you do this when everything is normal, you will have a basis upon which to compare. The gums of a normal dog refill immediately, the gums of a dehydrated dog could take 3 seconds or so to return to their pink state. If you know what’s normal then when something is abnormal it’s very obvious and it will stop you being concerned when you don’t need to be.

If you're trying for recipes as an alternative for commercial dog food - its not as easy as it sounds. You need to do a blurb to make people understand that they cant just single one out and use it every day because often this is what people are looking for .They want to choose one and feed that all the time and that makes the risk high that they are either over feeding or under feeding something which will have a long term health problem. This one for example is lacking as a base diet unless you specifically use chicken pet mince any other will make it deficient in many of the big deal minerals. This is one I use about once a fortnight. PORRIDGE MEAL Use rolled oats, quick cooking, soak for an hour or two. Serve at body temperature. 1 Cup oatmeal , 1 or 2 teaspoons , honey, 1 teaspoon olive oil or cod liver oil if it is winter ,1 teaspoon brewers yeast several spoons of minced vegetables prepared from using a juicer to separate pulp from juice and reconstituted. Fresh and dried fruits, apples, pineapple, banana etc.shredded, unsweetened coconut, 1/2 teaspoon kelp powder ,2 whole eggs,a teaspoon of egg shell powder for extra protein. This is a high energy, high fiber, high protein meal which all of the dogs and pups here just really enjoy. How far do you want to go? I have some recipes on how to make your own herbal tonics, medicines and salves ,soap for dogs, home made shampoo for dogs, your own flea collars ,herbal pillows pretty well any thing you can think of actually.I also have an article here you can include on common mistakes people make when feeding their dogs home made diets if you wantt to use it as part of your intro or preface. If its good enough Im happy to include it in our nutrition courses and help you promote it . I think its a great idea.

I agree with you I wouldnt place any breeding plans around eye colour either.
-
Re eye colour and gene linkages - a good place to start to look with your reseach into potential correlations with problems and eye colour maybe with Heterochromia and Homologous chromosomes.
-
Quote As far as eye colour goes - It is something that you really can't "breed" in or out. Blue eyes are not recessive in Siberian Huskies the way they are in humans. You can put 2 blue eyed dogs together and get brown eyes, or bi eyes, which is impossible in humans. The eye specialists I have spoken to have said that blue eyes really aren't the issue as far as the real nasty eye diseases go. Blue, brown, bi, parti they can all have good or bad eyes. I wouldn't base any breeding plans on eye colour. JMO Maybe not . http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/node/1062

Our info came from discussions with the people who do the scoring in WA and no - BYB are not part of the story simply because BYB dont score and the scores arent entered or stats taken unless the dog is registered . I dont know enough about Husky's without going after specific info to make educated comment re scores but I dont think hips have ever been a real issue in the breed .The results of stats of breeds though both here and in the states is telling us that even though we have been testing for a hell of a long time over all we havent improved on scores .So if Husky's have got reasonable hips its because they always have had and its not because of us scoring. If we were the breed average would come down.Hip scoring is a whole new topic and it would be good to have a yak about it without needing to be politically correct so we could openly talk about the issues. Seems on a world wide basis most Husky people agree eyes are your biggest challenge. The danger comes in just racing in and taking anything out of the gene pool because it fails a particular test .The test results should be a tool and part of what the breeder needs to take into account depending on the mode of inheritance and many other things because we dont know what genes may be linked together and eliminating one may make another problem rarely seen or never seen in the breed float to the surface. It sounds simple - test the dogs eyes - if it fails the eye test dont use it for breeding. However, this constantly narrows the gene pool and history and science teaches us that when we take one problematic gene out we usually find we have another we begin to see emerging which may be fatal or have more serious consequences. Simple way of trying to explain it is. If we decide we wont allow humans to breed if they have brown eyes or carry the gene for brown eyes we would see an over night increase in the population which has blue eyes and an increase in skin cancer, red haired people and the incidence of an inability of humans to synthesise phenyanaline [PKU]. If we take out all the people who have blue eyes we would have to eventually see a higher incidence of humans who have an inability to synthesise zinc. In dogs we will see the results of our breeding decisions quickly in comparison but many will be things which dont show up at birh or cant be tested until much later in life and many will cause much more suffering than being blind does. If in fact blue eyes in the husky is linked to corneal problems you may end up with no genes for blue eyes left in the gene pool if we only take out dogs with corneal problems from the breeding program - no big deal - maybe - but what else is the gene linked to? There's much more to talk about but in this discussion - dont assume that the staining isnt something which needs to be taken into account in your breeding programs. Get it looked at and diagnosed by a vet and make your breeding decisions based on knowledge not by peer pressure or what you are told you should be selecting for or against.
-
Yep I agree Ian .Some lines in some breeds may have better hip scores but according to reports we've looked at we havent done anything over all to bring them down or eradicate it.
-
Look I dont want to carry this on and cause anyone any grief but the fact of the matter is that some SH have been diagnosed with . Distichia. It has been noted here that dogs in several countries have been diagnosed with it. It is also known to be a heritable issue. Therefore it is a genetic disorder known to occur in the breed .Whether you are being notified about it officially or not shouldnt make any difference .If a dog has the complaint - regardless of what breed it is or whether its the only dog ever known to have had it in the breed its still something that has to be taken into account when you do your breeding programs. There isnt any point in bringing in an overseas study to try to show its not there because the one in 1991 was conducted in Australia and there were at least 20 percent of them which had the condition and you state that you are aware that some others in various countries have got the thing but they are still passing eye exams and they are still being used for breeding .Knowing its heritable how can you think that its not something that needs to be checked and considered when dogs are being bred. I can see this is a new discussion but its not logical to tell us that some dogs have been noted as having it but its not a genetic issue for the breed .If its not seen as being an issue for the breed and is allowed to go unchecked eventually its going to be a huge problem for the breed. Just because its not something a specialist eye vet doesnt test for doesnt mean we shouldnt be getting it checked and trying not to breed it in any more than it is now.

This is a peer reviewed study. http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/1....1991.tb03168.x According to this study , distichia is the most prevalent eye disease in Siberian Husky Dogs. Considering how they define a known genetic disorder in a breed I would say that Distichia is a known genetic issue in the breed. This means that there is a one in 5 chance of it showing in the breed in 1991.If breeders havent taken note of this and bred affected and carrier animals anyway by now statistically it would be a much higher ratio.
Australian Veterinary Journal
Volume 68 Issue 5 Page 161-162, May 1991 To cite this article: RG STANLEY, JR BLOGG (1991) Eye diseases in Siberian husky dogs Australian Veterinary Journal 68 (5) , 161–162 doi:10.1111/j.1751-0813.1991.tb03168.x A full ophthalmic examination was performed on 40 Siberian husky dogs using direct and Indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonloscopy and nasolacrimal cannulation. Eight (20%) of the dogs were found to have distichia, 10 (25%) had excessive medial caruncular hairs, 8 (20%) had absence, displacement, or narrowing of the nasolacrimal puncta, 2 (5%) had bilateral corneal crystalline opacities, and 2 (5%) had unilateral areas of lateral corneal lipidosis. Fifty percent of the dogs had some abnormality of the Lridocorneal (drainage) angle. However, In only one of these was the deformity severe enough to require glaucoma prophylaxis. An association between blue lris colour and malformation of the lridocorneal angle was noted.

Quote Distichia is NOT a hereditary condition of the Siberian Husky. In fact there are dogs in Australia, US and Canada of which have been diagnosed with Distichia of which have all passed their respective countries eye exams. How does a dog pass an eye exam with Distichia ? Do you mean they are still breeding with dogs with Distichia because they dont have any of the things a specialist vet needs to look at ?
-
maybe you misunderstood or i did, what i am saying is failing an eye test before or after eye staining occurs have absolutely nothing to do with each other. maybe as you got this information through someone else the information was muddled somewhere along the line. i am not sure that the person that has this dog if you tell her maybe would not appreciate everyone talking about their dog. Have to agree with you Sue isn't that against forum rules?? No this isnt against forum rules because in this case the owner has given permission for the thing to be spoken about but even if they hadnt nothing has been said here to identify the owner or the dog. well I find that very interesting as there were a couple of posts removed from the sibe thread even though, no kennel, website or person's name was ever mentioned. I don't see the difference? As I dont have a clue what posts you're talking about I cant comment on them but often the person who is being spoken about will report the thread and request they be removed. As no one has done that this time and the person in question has given approval for the dog to be spoken about its hardly the same situation. Really the whole point is that you cant know whats going on behind the scenes and all the things that need to be taken into account when a decision is made so critising why a post is removed or edited and being upset because either Troy or I are taking sides is a no argument. I have never known Troy to just take sides when he's making a call about taking posts out and I think its quite strange that both sides accuse us of the same thing.
-
Doubtful - unless its a known genetic disorder in the breed - which clearly its not - there are too many variables and just because one or two are caused by one thing it will have little bearing on the topic of staining in huskies.
-
Well thank you to all of the sibe people who have PM'd me .I will answer here so everyone gets the same answer For the record - I have some vague recollection of moderating a couple of posts ONCE in the sibe thread several months ago and once making a comment because someone had quoted me from another thread so if any moderating has occurred there which you feel is unfair talk to Troy but like me Troy will only come in if something is happening which breaches forum rules anyway. Rather than accuse me or Troy of playing favourites perhaps you should stand back and look at your posting style. And if you think there's more moderating in the sibe thread than any other breed threads - you're wrong there's problems in ALL of them from time to time. Time to empty my in box again.

Quote Actually Steve, I am the one who is not sure what is going on here...... Why are you responding to my post or any of the posts on here?? Surely you have more important things to do as a forum moderator?...... it feels to me like playing favourites..... I have no idea why you would feel I was playing favourites and for the record I post in response to any thread I like on this forum just as anyone else does. I dont get paid to moderate and I play by the rules just as anyone else does. If Im involved in a thread and Im in the middle of it or I think I might play favourites I stand back and let Troy moderate - not that Ive ever been asked to do that but to prevent anyone thinking Im playing favourites. I would hope most people here would know I wouldnt just go with someone if I thought they were wrong no matter who they were. Considering the OP said it was O.K. for anyone to make comment it amazes me that you would make any comment or question why Im coming into this thread or any thread. Believe me - you would know if I was being sarcastic or nasty when I write something - it would leave NO doubt. Thats still how some of the comments felt to me - not specifically yours but the tone of several were out of my comfort level and felt like bullying. ....and I like to be able to have my say, in my way without feeling like people are going to run off and tell on me......this is just too weird Rae Well if you want to have your say as long as your way doesnt breach forum rules you're welcome to do that - but if - when you have your say - it crosses the line people are expeced to tell on you whether thats weird or not.
