I will take every opportunity to learn more about my profession and to improve my services. I will continue to acquire additional skills and knowledge by keeping informed of advances in the field of my employment. I will deal honestly and fairly with the public, and I will not misrepresent my services either knowingly or unknowingly. I will respect the confidentiality of my customers. I will place service to my customers and to my industry above personal gain. I will avoid unfair competitive practices, slander and defamation of my competitors including actions or business practices which would result in dishonour upon, or distrust of, my competitors or of my industry in general. I will never contribute to, or participate in any way, to unethical breeding, breeding practises or breeding for the sole purpose of profit. I will enrol as an MDBA Breeder member and comply with the breeder code of conduct before I breed a litter. I will be respectful of, and co-operate with other professions and trades which operate within the pet industry. I will abide by all applicable federal, state and local laws governing animal care and to my profession. I will operate my business in such a manner as to reflect honour upon my industry and within my local community. I will encouraging responsible pet ownership and strive to advance and cultivate a harmonious relationship between members of the dog owning community and the non dog owning community. I will do this by exemplifying responsible dog ownership and accountability in turn promoting increased public awareness.
  2. Yep we thought the EDBA was doing what they needed to do but we wanted to come at it by showing that if someone was responsible it didnt matter what breed they had .We have never been nor will we ever be EDBA or ANKC competition and our aim is to work with them.
  3. Steve Are you saying that people with a x breed or one of those nasty Restricted Breed dogs can also join MDBA? I thought you were just another purebreed organisation. Not that my dogs aren't purebreeds, they're just not recognised by the ANKC. Good heavens I hope you're not serious! In the beginning all of the original board of the MDBA were members of the EDBA in fact they were office bearers of the EDBA and founding members and part of the reason we set up was to join everyone together to have a united voice. Power in numbers and demonstrate that our members could be trusted to do the right thing by the community and the dogs they owned. Our breeder members are purebred breeders but that includes breeders of breeds which are not recognised by the ANKC. Our pet owner members own all manner of breeds and cross breeds and our rescue members rescue both purebred and mixed breed dogs. We wanted to gather responsible dog owners, breeders, rescue and canine professionals under one umbrella with opt in codes of conduct to be able to ask for exemptions and similar with government because our members have somethings that no other org has - unity where we have dogs in common regardless of breed or part thereof and a voluntary membership.it means when we go in we represent all dog owners and not just those who belong to one group. So in answer to your question we welcome all dog owners who can agree to our codes of conduct. Up until now we have been in and fighting and sometimes we even smell victory in our nostrils but we have been capped at the post by the piddling boys because they have CC support and do deals all over the place because of the numbers. So please x breed and restricted breed owners by all means apply and come join us. Its only $22 .
  4. There's a lot of piddling in pockets going on me thinks. The only way to try to fight back is to have the numbers because voters is the only currency they count and so different people get to use the piddle pot. Join here
  5. What? If so, this is discrimination against other dogs (& their owners). How on earth did such a discriminatory proposal get written into a proposed law that's supposed to deal with 'dangerous' dogs? Which is supposed to be about dogs' behaviour....& especially how certain owners allow their dogs to become 'dangerous'. Membership in any kind of association....& attendance in a show ring at least once a year...have no direct bearing on a dog's behaviour. General dog owners of Victoria should be very annoyed about this. It borders on the farcical. Maybe general dog owners should see if they could get membership for their dogs in the Melbourne Club....& make sure they turn up to the bar for an annual drink (accompanied by their dog). Then, petition the government to get members of the Melbourne Club exempted from these proposed laws. If the Melbourne Club won't cooperate....try the St Vincent de Paul Society. And, if not them, keep trying to find an organisation which will. Doesn't have to have any direct relationship to dogs' behaviour. Farces aside....I wonder if VicDogs realise the law will apply to the dogs they sell to people, as pets (who will then find themselves cut off from VicDogs' mantle of safety under the law). Do they have any concern about this? Mita Ive been beating my drum over this sort of thing now for a long time. In victoria if you are a member of Vic dogs you are able to be exempt form compulsory desexing in shires where thats in and there a whole bunch of other stuff that is disgracefully obviously simply drumming up business for Vic dogs. I hope they pay the government a commission!
  6. We are desperately needing someone to foster a grey hound [ex rescue] in Sydney for a few weeks. The owner has been made homeless and has been able to get some temporary accommodation but there is no way she can keep her dog with her. Budi is a greyhound boy - desexed and very well behaved. He is kids, dog and cat friendly though he prefers to keep his distance from little dogs. He is used to being indoors and is house trained. If anyone could help could you please call us on 0269276707 or email info @mdbapacers.org.au asap. All expenses will be paid. Thanks Julie

  14. Over 50 known genetic diseases in the lab - most of which there are no tests for - how do you know anything about whether they are likely to have any of these or carry them? Thats why we have registered papers. Canine hip dysplasia (CHD): is a skeletal problem, an abnormal development of the hip joint where the head of the femur does not fit snugly into the pelvic socket. It is characterized by a shallow acetabulum (the "cup" of the hip joint) and changes in the shape of the femoral head (the "ball" of the hip joint). These changes may occur due to excessive looseness in the hip joint. Hip dysplasia can exist with or without clinical signs. When dogs exhibit symptoms of hip dysplasia they usually are in pain and lame on one or both rear legs. Severe arthritis can develop as a result of the malformation of the hip joint and this results in pain as the disease progresses. Effective arthritis treatment More information. See the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA See the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program PennHIP You don't have to wait until your dog exhibits symptoms. You can take steps now to minimize the chances your dog will suffer arthritic pain due to hip dysplasia. Treating your pet's impending or existing arthritis. Gastric Torsion - or Bloat (Gastric dilatation volvulus GDV): This condition is caused by a twisting of the stomach and thus trapping the stomach contents and gases resulting in a rapid swelling of the abdomen accompanied by pain and eventual death if untreated. It is a top priority emergency with immediate veterinarian action required. This is a predicament most common in large deep chested breeds. Anyone owning a deep chested breed, susceptible to bloat should be prepared by recording and posting the exact emergency procedures for the veterinary hospital they go to - who to call after hours, how to get to emergency clinics or alternative facilities and what payment arrangements those facilities will require. More information. Retinal Dysplasia: This condition is an abnormal development of the retina. A retinoscopic examination can usually reveal retina problems. More information. Muscular Dystrophy: Autosomal Recessive Muscular Dystrophy or ARMD. This condition is a progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles. A blood test, electromyography and muscular biopsies can definitively identify muscular dystrophy. ARMD is not usually fatal. Elbow Dysplasia (ununited anconeal process): Due perhaps to improper development (different growth rates) of the three bones making up the elbow, the joint is lax or loose and in mildly affected dogs leads to painful arthritis. Whereas in severly affected dogs, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), fragmented medial coronoid processes and united anconeal processes can result from the stress in the joint. More information. Treatments involve surgical correction if possible, or medical management using asprin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. See effective Osteoarthritis treatment. Cataracts: As with humans, dogs can get cataracts, but the presence of cataracts in young dogs, called juvenile cataracts, have a hereditary foundation. Cataracts are diagnosed by means of an ophthalmoscopic exam. If the dog is in good health, cataracts can be surgically removed with usually good results. More information. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD): is a degeneration of bone underlying the cartilage layer of joints. It is a condition often seen in young fast growing dogs of the larger breeds. X-rays of suspected joints are often inconclusive. OCD usually appears during the growth phase of a young dog, usually six to nine months of age. OCD can affect the shoulder, ankle or elbow joint. It is painful and the dog limps. Physical impacts, like jumping off high objects and being overweight are contributing factors. Complete rest and limited playful activities for several weeks, often difficult with a young puppy, is effective treatment, or surgical removal of torn away cartilage pieces, is probably the fastest treatment. Controlling diet is important in fast growing breeds. More information. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): is a family of diseases all involving the gradual deterioration of the retina. It is diagnosed by a retinoscopic exam or by means of an electroretinogram (ERG). Early in the disease, affected dogs become nightblind and lack the ability to see in dim light; later on daytime vision also fails. As their vision deteriorates, affected dogs adapt to their handicap very well, as long as their environment remains constant. Certain breeds are affected early in life, whereas in other breeds, PRA develops much later in onset. More information. Other Documented Problems: Existing congenital and hereditary diseases - non prioritized. 3, 7, 9, 9a, 10, 22, 40, 42, 59, 68, 77, 78, 85, 88, 89, 94, 95, 103, 109, 121, 122, 129a, 147, 148, 149, 152, 158, 159a, 160, 166, 197, 204a, 206a, 221, 221a, 244, 245, 256, 258, 269, 270, 276, 282, 315, 330,
  15. Hey, there's others here who are doing the same thing - just pop into the Aussie thread! where?
  16. Im glad you know where every single one of them is going and I hope that as you watch them grow into adult hood that none are blind ,have heart problems or joint problems but considering you used no science and only luck to attempt to make these wonderful loving pets and that the parents come from an unethical breeder who sold their puppies to a pet shop even though they could have gotten more money for them[ in order to avoid responsibility] than if they had sold them personally the chances of that happening are on percentage much lower than they would have been if you had of used the science which is available. The purpose of the papers is to track genetic diseases and health issues because dogs which have good hips on X ray often make babies with horrible hips. Dogs who can see at aged 2 often cannot see at age 5 and even if they can they often make babies who go blind or drop dead from heart problems. You think they only need to be registered and carry papers if they are going to be used for breeding or showing - thats O.K. lots of regsitered breeders think that too however, you are very very wrong and I truly hope your babies live happily ever after.
  17. The reason health checking is done to the standards that they are, is to try to prevent the heartbreaking scenario of pups having horrible diseases like hip displasia. So by not doing all the proper tests, not only do you risk breeding more dogs with the disease, you may be legally liable if the new owner starts to get unhappy about the cost of treatment, because you did nothing to test the dogs for hip displasia, when very specific tests are available. There is nothing stopping you getting both parents dogs hip scored now. Will you be doing that? Or will the pup buyers just have to take a punt? There is no point in having the parents scored now.
  18. Yeah I know and I understand but I think there is more to it all and I believe that with a passion.
  19. So basically, you are agreeing with me. Fact is the OP has this great resource with all sorts of info but chose a certain path. She is a vet nurse and should know the procedure for health testing and some basic idea on rescue through her work. She doesn't come across like a country bumpkin. I'd rather not make it easier for people who chose to have BYB litters, it doesn't tend to discourage them. Actually I dont agree with making it easier for them either but over the last 6 years Ive been able to discourage a fair few away from BYB and bring them into breeding ethically and registered and Ive also disuaded several others from breeding at all - without flogging them.
  20. Shame on you! How do you record the weight? I have never weighed a pup at birth in almost 20 years of breeding so I do not need neck bands. LOL ;)
  21. *nods* It's bloody appalling isn't it? Yep There are so many great registered breeders out there, it's unfortunate that not all of them do the right thing by the pups they breed. Not sure what can be done to change that. Promote the ones who do and hope eventually to educate the public and make em change with peer pressure.
