Incontinence In 1 Year Old Bitch
StaceyB replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can i ask what age she was spayed? She was a few days over 6 months. I've been reading up in Spay Incontinence and it sounds pretty spot on with whats been going on, I'm going to bring it up with the vet and see what she says. I'm trying not to assume that this it whats going on. I really wish the vets told people about this sort of thing when they take their dog in to get spayed, there is a 30% risk of this developing in bitches over 20kg. That is huge amount!! -

She has been spayed, just under 6 months ago. I'll ask the vet about it this arvo, I have an appointment at 4pm. -
Hi Guys, I'm really worried about Gypsy, she seems to be incontinent. She has recently had a Urinary Tract Infection and finished her anti-biotics 3 weeks ago and everything was fine, but for the last few nights she doesn't seem to notice when she needs to go to the toilet and has wet herself - on my bed tonight! But she doesn't make any attempt to move to go out to wee, nor does she move afterwards unless told to. And it's not just a little bit of urine either, it's a pretty decent amount. This (and obsessive licking) was the symptom that prompted me to take her to the vet when she was diagnosed with the UTI in the first place, but now I'm thinking that the UTI may have comeback and thats what is causing it (hopefully). I'll be taking her back to the vet ASAP, but I was hoping someone might be able to suggest any other causes that I can ask about. This sort of thing is just not normal in a dog her age (11.5 months), and it's got me really worried about her. Oh, and it only ever seems to be at night at around the same time, which seems really weird! I only took her out for a loo break half an hour before it happened tonight and I watched her wee while she was out there. Same thing happened last night, but it was about an hour after her loo break and it's always between about 8.30pm and 10.30pm. Any ideas you guys might have would be really great!

Harminee that is awesome!!! Thank you so much!

Oh, now you're asking all the hard questions! Umm, saying "Monster Dog", I like the colours purple and teal. Maybe something with pics 1, 2 & 4 in the background and a bit fuzzy and pic 3 more focused?
-
Can someone make me a sig? They all looks so awesome and I have no clue about stuff like that! Heres some piccies of the monster to play with...

I love it! She's adorable!!

Is It Safe To Give Dog Human Anti-histamines?
StaceyB replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When I went to the Chemist to get some I told the girl behind the counter it was for the dog, and it turns out she used to work as a vet nurse! She was able to help me out with dosages and some other anti-histamines I could give to Gypsy if the Polaramine doesn't work. She really seemed to know what she was talking about and all the dosage info she gave me corresponded with the website Jaegertheweim posted. -
Have you checked with your council what age they need her registered? Not having a dig, but most local councils require dogs to be registered from 3 months (12 weeks).
-
She's only 2 weeks off being 6 months so I wouldn't think it would cause any problems. I'm sure your vet wouldn't have suggested it if he didn't think she could handle the surgery!

Is It Safe To Give Dog Human Anti-histamines?
StaceyB replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good point about the other causes SAS, I just assumed it was the grass because she has only started scratching excessively since we moved and the new house has a different type of grass. -
The grass in our back yard seems to be cause Gypsy a fair bit of skin irritation and she is always scratching. A friend told me to get some Polarimine(sp?) from the chemist to give her. Is it ok to give that to her? Or would I be better off getting the proper anti-histamine for dogs from the vet? Thanks Stacey ETA - Never mind, I did a search and found the answer!

Have the vets taken any cultures from a urine sample? My girl is just about to finish a course of antibitics for UTI (last tablet with dinner tonight - YAY). They put her on some general AB's while the waited for the culture results, but had to change to stronger ones because the bug she has was more resiliant to the antibiotics she was on - they cleared up the symptoms a bit, but weren't enough to kill the bug. So anyway, the point of that story is, maybe the antibiotics aren't strong enough to get rid of the bug causing the infection completely.

Slightly Off Topic, but you can get minced chicken frames from Leonards at Pheonix Shops for $1.25 a kilo Riverstar, much cheaper than anything in the supermarket. Back on Topic now - I also feed Bonnie dry food. I find it really good, Gypsy likes it and she has a lovely soft shiney coat (provided she's not covered in filth from running around the back yard! ). I also feed minced chicken frames with eggs, pureed apple and pureed veggies mixed in and once a week she gets sardines. I also give her meaty bones when I can get them (the local butcher doesn't have them very often).

I would say theres a bit of JRT in there too. My friend has a Maltese X Shih Tzu and he didn't look much like your girl at her age. Ralph had a much rounder head and was a lot more fluffy than her. His ears were a bit smaller too. She is adorable though, whatever the breed!

The dog club I belong to wont let you to agility training until the dog is 12 months old at least, this is because the don't have the equipment suitable for pups. You can do obedience training as soon as they are fully vaccinated though.

I need Gypsy to be fine having things taken away from her because I have a few friend with young children (todlers), and while I do make sure they are supervised at all times, if the kids were to grab something Gyps has in her mouth I don't want her snapping at them. not to mention all the yucky things dogs seem to be able to find around the place...
-
Stubborn little thing she is. Oh well, I would be quizzing the trainer when you start puppy school!
-
Gypsy had some food aggression when she was about the same age as your boy. The way I stopped it was by hand feeding her and holding her bowl on alternative days and putting my hands in the bowl and moving the food around, if she gowled or snapped her food was taken away. When I give her bones or pig ears I let her chew for about 5 mins and then I go and take whatever she has, hold it for a bit and then give it back to her - but I make sure she sits before she gets anything and she can only take it when I say yes. When I take things away I say "Ta". Now when she has a bone I can call her over with it, say Ta and she will happily let me have it because she trust that she will get it back.
-
My girl only does this with OH because he is an idiot and ignores me when I tell him to make her sit before he says hello to her! I never get wee'd on, I thinks it's because I give her something else to concentrate on and it distracts her from being so excited.
-
Will she walk around the back yard with the lead on? Maybe if you hold onto the lead and someone else stands about a mentre away with her favourite toy to entice her she might move... I'm not really too sure though, we had Gypsy on the lead since the day we brought her home so we never hand problems like this and the lead doesn't faze her at all. Good luck with your little girl.

Choke Chains For Basic Commands. Too Much?
StaceyB replied to IncrediJack's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks, I do take him to obedience. I guess I will just keep doing what I'm doing and not expect too much. A 4 month old pup is not likely to have the greatest attention span too (something akin to a paperclip in my experience :D ) I struggle with Gypsy at training because she is such a social butterfly and just wants to play with all the other dogs, but I follow the trainers instructions during our daily walks and she is pretty good. She is also only 9months old so has an attention span slightly better than a paperclip, but still very short. You just need to be patient and consistent and he'll get the hang of it. What breed is your pup btw? This may effect how quickly he learns/reacts to the comands too as some breeds are a lot more stubborn/independant than others... -
Choke Chains For Basic Commands. Too Much?
StaceyB replied to IncrediJack's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have to ditto this. I have just joined my local club and take Gypsy to obedience classes. It's great socialisation for her, she is learning to do things with distractions and they give us step by step instructions to take home to revise what was taught during the class. I also believe that the dog will respond better for you if you are more hands on with the training rather than taking him away from his home and family and being totally removed from his comfort zone. It will also teach him that you are his pack leader, which makes things easier for you in the long run and will build on his respect for you. -
Gypsy think that pulling washing off the line is the greatest game on the planet! I just keep her inside when I hang out the washing.
