I have to agree about the information pack. I was actually thinking about this today (planing future puppy packs LOL) and have decided to include in my puppy pac a little info for the vet re: breed traits (Ideal weights, unusual features etc), what the pup has had done up till then and anything else between now and then. This way they can get the information that I as a breeder need them to know so they can help my puppy owner. I would also include my details so that if they ever needed to contact me about anything genetic they could do it directly with the owners permission. I think that as consumers we should be more proactive in letting vets know WHAT we want. If you want a vet to know about your breed- then give them the information. If they chose not to read it then you know that they are not the vet for you. If you are conserned about your vet not being up to date in current laws- same deal provide them with the infromation in writing and if they chose not to do anything with it again you know to avoid them.

Yep I am in sydney and why am I studying down here!!!! I think it is about 50/50 straight from school and those who have already done previous study and I think it makes a HUGE difference in their ability to cope. At least that is what I have seen in the past two years with school leavers definatly having the brain power to cope easily with the academic work, but with many of the older students having a wider experience base with animal handling. But I am guessing the cohorts would also have a large difference in more than just age- That would be another interesting aspect to consider..... Not that one uni 'teaches' better but that they attracct a different group of people and thus will produce different attributes in their graduates. Sydney wasnt my first choice but when it came down to it location was more negotiable than my final career choice....
-
When I graduate I expect that I will bumble along not knowing EVERYTHING for a few years. I started as in agriculture first so at least have animal handling skills but with what I know now and what I think I can learn in the next three years..... well is it no wonder that as a new grad that I will have to follow how we are taught to treat an animal along the outline that we are given at uni? There are a fair few grads that go directly from school to uni and are just gaining life experience by the time they hit the workforce. I just hope that when my peers and I graduate that someone is willing to give us a go since we will be the future of the profession...... I agree that you cant compare the 'new' vet to an 'old' vet. There are some new grads that are very practical and will slip right into treating animals, others will struggle for a while be it because they think they know everything (which is what we are taught to portray so that ppl will take us seriously). On the other hand there are older vets who have their head stuck in the sand and dont want to evolve with the new information and others have a wealth on knowledge and have kept up to date. Also all those old vets started off not knowing everything at some point and had to build from there to what you see today. I am the first person to admit that I am fussy about my vet- at the moment I dont even have one because mine went overseas (I am hoping dearly she comes back at the end of the year) because I have tried the local ones and am not happy. I pay more for a consult but feel that I get better value to go to my choice clinic (as well as travel about an hour to get there and I live in Sydney so have plenty of choice). In saying that I also have a different vet if it a sports related injury or if it a query about breeding. I defiantly see vets specialising in the future. Mixed practise is almost a thing of the past. There are vets specialising solely in orthopaedic surgery of the knee, elbow and hip in dogs- and if one of my dogs ever needs knee surgery I know who I am going too. I dont really have a problem with someone aiming to go into small animal practise not being comfortable around a cow. I DO have a problem with someone wanting small animal vet being scared of dogs!! Hello fellow vet students!! Glad to see there are a few of us on here- hope you are enjoying your studies. ETA Agree COMPLETELY!!

+1 Oh and poodlefan I know most DOLers are happy to accept that vets have the right charge what they charge- I have seen/been impressed with what people have done to make sure thier pets are well looked after- Its why I keep coming back and reading as I know that I would do the same thing! I know some in real life chosing the more expensive options to ensure quality and lenght of life rather than a short term fix. They go to a dermatologist and walk away knowing that they got what they paid for- a plan to make their dog happier!

Medicine? Law? But no one expects a lawyer to work because the love people LOL. I was getting at the fact that bertandsally indicated that grads from accounting, pharmacy and architecture get payed about the same after leaving uni. I know pharmasists get far more, and I believe majority of accountants/architects could earn more two. Just getting frustrated and need to leave well enough allone. I cant wait to graduate and I would like to educate the ppl on here as much as I would like to be educated (yep thats why I come on here to read/listen). It goes both ways I guess. I just get frustrated when ppl imply that vets as a whole dont do enough or charge too much. Go to a vet that does know, try and educate a Vet that doesnt and suck it up about vet fees- it costs what it costs build a bridge and get over it. If you dont like it dont go but DONT expect vets to not want to make a decent living just because you decide they charge too much. I am quite forthright in my belief that I have as much right to earn the same amount to perform surgery on a great dane as it would to perform surgery (without ANY medicare or health care subsidy) as a doctor. It will never happen but there are many times in the future I will do the EXACT same thing as the Dr down the road, charge LESS (more up front but end up with less after medicare and private health puts money in) and still have someone walk out complaining about how much it cost!! This is all sooooooo off topic. I would like to hear more ideas about how to improve how vet students learn. Not all Vets have to be members of the AVA which does have groups for different intrests http://avacms.eseries.hengesystems.com.au/...m?Section=SIGs1. The ava would keep their members up to date with current legislation however as I said not everyone is a member. There is no special intrest group for dog reproduction..... as the repro is more about agricultural animals.

We learn the mechanics of reproduction, ie anatomy, physiology congenital abnormalities for 8hrs/week for 13 weeks. No they did not go into HOW to look at two dogs and decide what two would suit each other. Just as the genetics we learn was about 5hrs/week for 13 weeks. That doesnt mean that what we learn actually pans out in reality simply because as many others have said they are living, breating biological creatures and in the end you deal with the hand you got delt. Well organise medicare for your dog (yep you didnt pay the whole fee to the cardiologist even if you were not in private health care) OR dont take your dog since you dont think that the service was worth it. You are a consumer buying a product- if you decide the product is not worth it then dont buy it! The AVERAGE graduate is LUCKY to get $40,000 what about the unlucky below average? Other professions dont take 5yrs of study+ continued learning after they have graduated....... I will again leave it there because I am guessing that no matter what I say you will still believe that you did not get the product/service you wanted and that is just something that you will have to come to terms with. BUT the specialist did have a right to cover their costs AND make enough money to live on regardless of you opion. That is acutally something that we have to be counciled in lectures quite regluarly because it really messes with alot of vets heads when ppl decide that they dont have a right to make money because they should 'love animals'. Here is a question- does EVERY vet need to know about breeding entirely OR should they know that breeders should go to a specialist? I do however agree that they should at least make an effort to keep up with currentl legislation.

I will start of by saying that I am a third year vet student....... Thanks so in 3yrs time I will automatically SUCK just because I graduated from vet. Well thanks alot. Yep I care about money because I own 5 dogs and would like to be able to afford to take them to agility and flyball, and be able to afford to rescue wildlife etc. How dare I as a so called animal lover dare to charge someone for a SERVICE. So why do vets suck- because you dont value them. You havent BOTHERED to go out and find a half decent vet (I dont deny that some vets are crap but guess what- you get to chose as a consumer wherer you go) and I can tell you there are some bloody awsome vets out there so why not DO something instead whinging and find one??? I will also point out that you have not included in your rant that you accept that not ALL vets suck. You said vets suck with no other qualification thus you HAVE indicated that all vets suck and really do find this QUITE offensive! I will leave it there because I would prob get banned from saying any more.............. whilst i do not agree that all vets 'suck' as i believe there are good and bad in every profession, i do disagree with the amount some charge. recently had to take bert to a dermatologist, was $170 for 1/2 hr consultation that didnt include any testing. she got some sticky tape samples of his paws and left the room for 2-3 mins to put them under a microscope and that cost $60. i understand they are specialists but i had to see a cardiac specialist and paid less than that (and i didnt have private health at the time). whilst you try and plan the funds for vet bills, it doesnt mean that they are always reasonable. if prices were a bit lower perhaps more people would seek vet care for their pets. Once again how do YOU come up with a reasonable fee? that $60 wasnt for the sticky tape or the 2-3 min of time- it was the 5YRS of training that the vet did undergrad to become a vet and then the X more number of yrs that they trained to become a specialist. For all you know they are still paying off debt to have done all this study. The $170 consult fee was for the microscope, and all the other technology that they would have had behind the scenes. So how are the fees not 'reasonable'?????????????????????????? A vet grad will be lucky to earn $35thousand in a year once they graduate!!!! It is the lowest payed white collar profession and yet you say it should be cheaper ON TOPIC after my little rant I agree that there are a lot of vets/vet students that dont actually keep up to date with what is going on in the dog world. Most dont know what flyball is, don’t understand agility and couldn’t tell you their local obedience club. But I guess you just need to look around and find a vet that is appropriate to your needs and stick with them. I cant tell you how to fix it but perhaps contacting the universities to see when they do animal handling and organising your own pets to go in. That way YOU can educate the vet students!! Another way might be to contact societies such as VETSoc (at Sydney uni) and organising to try and educate on different breeds during lunch each week...... That way when they graduate they will have had their ideas challenged and be able to think for themselves instead of just blindly believing what lecturers tell them.

One of your new puppy owners said hello the other night (saw me with Demi). I cant wait to see at least one of these little fluffers here in sydney!!!!!! I think it calls for a sydney lappie picnic!!!

Not sure about the ears and tail. When entering the flyball ring abby (the Kelpie that Nik posted a shot of) will be barking, lunging- eyes wide, ears pricked, tail up BUT when I kneel down and line her up her ears go flat to her head tail drops and she pulls her front feet up close to the body. So I agree that the body is always tense however the other areas of body language will change entirely. She is in drive the whole time and would do a run at any time (and has when she has escaped) however she prepares herself for release. I would actually dissagree that body language for drive is universal. Bluey, another of my kelpies will sit with ears back when getting ready to do flyball. He is only just 'getting' flyball so I would not say is in full drive yet however will pull on his harness to be let go. He looks no different to any other time he sits, unless you feel how tense his body is to an outsider he often does not look very drivey at all. His ears are back because he is listening to me and he keeps his ears back the entire way he is running away from me. So I guess what I am saying is that there it is more about the dogs energy rather than their physical position that would indicate when the dog is TID because their body language will be influenced my what is going on around them. ie drive with acutal prey (sheep) looks different to a dog working for a tug at obedience. ETA- LOVE the shot Kelpie-i!!!!!!!!!! And I know a Kelpie is in drive when I start dreading the vet bills....

Vets All Natural Complete Mix
Jumabaar replied to Prydenjoy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use it and love it. I do find that it is very energy rich and can put condition on dogs very quickly so just watch your dogs weight using it. It works well for my Kelpies though who love it as well and will quite happily train for little bits of it too! I dont play "chef" either but I spent 4hrs yesterday preparing raw meals for a month for 5 dogs!! All I have to do is rip open a bag chuck it in their bowl and walk away. I spend less time poop scooping for them so the 4hrs is well worth it in my books! -
5 Month Kelpie With Fear Agression And Love Of Barking
Jumabaar replied to je33ie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am glad things are working out! Many kelpies come from the pound frustrated and it takes someone to put in the time and effort to get them going in the right direction!! You are doing a great job and Zulu is lucky to have you looking out for her!! -
One of my dogs was making a 'clicking' sound in his hind leg- stifle region. He was never lame or showed any weakness. I took him to the chiro who couldnt find anything majorly out but did some light work through his hips and the clicking stopped....

OK I am still waiting for my funky new lens to arrive and I wasnt going to start until I got it but..... When you have had a hard night partying- and they didnt get to bed till 2am ... You just need to put your feet up and have a snooze The puppy foot cushion -
For a pup I would always recommend an airline crate or collapsible crate. Most pups tend to chew things for a while and though the K9 crates look much nicer it may not survive puppy teeth and claws. I also agree- hard crate for a dachshund (I have seen them chew out of these two LOL). My soft crate no longer has a front door so it now a den. Since getting the pup there has been some additions- I just put the bed in there!! toys, waterbowl (was full 5min before the pic was taken), phone (hiding under the bed), slipper, drink bottle, socks, mail........ There was really nothing left in the house by the end!! She is a bit of a bower bird and the Kelpies have to ask permission to take their toys back LOL

5 Month Kelpie With Fear Agression And Love Of Barking
Jumabaar replied to je33ie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Completely agree All I wanted to add was that this has not actually been diagnosed as being fear agression. The OP needs to see someone who can look at the dog and Identify what the problem actually is- fear agression or frustration which I have also seen look like agression in Kelpies.
