  1. White Stripe boy- he was bleeding from his cord (solved now but he kept on getting his ties off- so already a naughty one!!) so he had a massive white stripe painted on his butt so we could pick him out easily lol Pink boy Yellow boy Nekkid boy
  2. Abby has had 4 girls and 4 boys by C-section. So far all are doing well!!
  3. Congrats on the litter. Check her wound site at least twice a day. I alays have a look at every feed anyway. If her stitches appear red just make sure they arent being restricted. They may stick due to fluid drying. If she appears hot where her stitches are apply cool compresses and monitor the site for infections. Puppies claws can also pull on stitches as they try to get that milk down. They should be alright though. Was she put on antibiotics? I take stitches out myself on surgeries but if anything is amiss call your vet. And in no time it will be a visit to get stitches out. If you have the fishy ungvita cream Vit E) apply this to the wound area to help with healing. No strenuous exercise for her and check for sutures that may of come out. Make sure hands are clean when checking them. And if I have missed anything I am sure someone else can fill in Thanks for the advice!! Will duck out to the chemist tomorrow to get the cream. I have one little miss that insists on burrowing her head in the suture wound so I have marked her hip to keep an eye on her during feeding. Thankfully I have no hesitation in ringing the vet (Quakers Hill) about anything- the receptionist was exceptional on the phone: its wonderful when you ring up a vet and they ask you the RIGHT question!! It was also great to sit there when she was recovering from her GA- I will be having any other surgeries done there for that specific reason. She has been lying down for 3 hrs now letting them feed as they want- one pup is lying under her leg dreaming :D. I have given her some yogurt as she has gone off the biolac (when did it turn bright yellow????) and she will get some yummy red rooster chicken later because its her favourite Its just hard getting pups onto the bottom teats as I dont want to pull the area too much, but she is already starting to role over as they burrow down to make space for them to access the teats. There should be some photos tonight They are just SOOOOOOOOO damn cute!! I am so tired but so energised at the same time- I just cant stop talking about it all!!!
  4. All made it through safe and sound (even the humans feeling sick looking on) 4 boys, 4 girls- which is wonderful since I want to keep a girl For some reason (I think the number and good size of all the pups) she just didnt progress into the second stage of labour. I went to a vet that SAID they had experience and gave her oxytocin- I agreed to it because her cervix was dilated so wanted to try and get things progressing. The vet this afternoon was worried that because it was given early that it may have caused the uterus to tighten and keep the pups in place. So I opted to do a C-section rather than try for another hour. Have learnt a few new lessons!! So a rather EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP Day in the end. Going to miss tomorrows exam because I havent slept in two nights and have made myself sick- totally worth it for my little churplets that are sitting in the whelping box!!! So looking forward to another sleepless night as Abby is still wobbly on her feet and a little worried by the brown furry things that have suddenly appeared. That being said she tried to clean them before she had fully recovered from her GA- her tongue wasn't working so there was a lot of slobber and drool and poking of puppies. She is in the whelping box now giving them their second meal. Any good links to info for looking after bitches post C-section? I figure extra info wont hurt :D
  5. She hasnt progressed past stage 1. Have given oral calcium and am off to my vet soon. Her cervix has dilated so I dont want to leave her too long.
  6. Another update- Abby has stopped playing fetch, couldnt finish her last meal (although she still tried!!) and is in her whelping box looking very uncomfortable. I am currently in here too keeping her company and watching trashy tv. I put Foxtell on the Xbox for a month- the first time I have ever had it but figured it would be a treat since I am going to be in here for so long!!
  7. Quick update. Nothing is happening lol. So much for my prediction that she would have them on the weekend. She now bulges out significantly behind her ribs, she is preferring to lie on her belly and has slowed down A LOT playing fetch- she still wants to but the other dogs are beating her to the ball.
  8. I agree that some would get kick backs. Wouldnt be much different from doing discount desexing for certain pet shops! I think I spent $450 on a Behaviouralist and I still have regular email contact. It was a lot of money for me, but not expensive IMO and certainly worth it knowing that my dog now has a much better quality of life. I had plenty of 'diagnoses' from trainers, however many of their methods didn't work because they were training over the underlying issue. Dealing with the issue itself has given much better results. That being said, I would not have known about dog behaviourists 5 yrs ago, and at no point in any of his visits to vets (where he was uncontrollable in the end) was I advised to see one. I was told to desex him as this would help. I chose to do it chemically so he didn't have to be left in a clinic which would have been detrimental to him, surprise surprise no help. So there would also be people out there that don't know they can get help.
  9. Part of it would also be that many vets don't know the behaviourists/private trainers in their area. Let alone that there would be a difference between them and bark busters. So I guess they would be recommending them because they are a franchise that is well advertised.
  10. LizT- that is 3 sheep herding. She is still a beginner in it so you leave the lead on so you have something to step on if they wont come off the sheep. She does have a nice recall but hadn't seen sheep in 12mths so want sure if the training had stuck!! I am hoping to do more herding with her after this litter because she loves it!! Abby has Conformation, Flyball, Endurance, Herding and Obedience titles- Ch Lyndoor Sleepy Sam ET HT FM CCD I am hoping to add agility titles next year!! She is my first show and performance dog and I really couldn't ask any more from her. She wasnt the easiest dog to learn how to train a dog with (if that makes sense) but she really has taught me so much already Yup I am a bit of a proud mum, regardless of the pups she has! Anyway a quick update- her temp has dropped by a degree this morning. No signs of restlessness or nesting but the pups are on the move. They are getting rather squashed in there now!!
  11. I have always had Kelpies, and have added a Lappie into the mix Future dream breeds breeds- Lapponian Herder Swedish Lapphund Maremma (want livestock to go with it ) Malinois Rescue Terrier Doubt I will get through the list, with so many kelpies around
  12. I think you just summed up Demi in regards to having a high drive threshold. On sheep she has been known to send them over the fence (her second go on them), but take her to obedience and she starts to nod off in class, even when I am going crazy to try and get her into drive. She has been described by some, incorrectly I feel as low drive, but I dont believe she is- her drive would be moderate, if I could initiate it more successfully. I started private agility lessons with her to try and sort out her problems with some equipment, but in that environment has no drive whats so ever. In a communal class with lots going on I can get her into drive and working enthusiastically. At flyball I don't have to do anything to trigger her into drive- she has amazing focus, is very reliable to commands that at home, undistracted have a 50% rate of success. So my job is now to try and find a method to trigger her (difficult for ME, because I have only owned dogs with a very low threshold before). I do think that I suppressed this earlier on and am now working to fix it- have started crate games and driving towards targets for food. I believe as she is now she could compete in flyball, and Obedience, but not agility because without triggering drive I am unable to fix her problems.
  13. I was just on a farm where all the 'working' kelpies went from paddock to paddock on the back of the quad bike. They were rarely needed as the sheep are handled regularly. They had three dogs and between them didn't spend a lot of time running around at all. And on some days no stock work was performed so they just slept around the house. Yes they got the mental stimulation from working the sheep but they were not bouncing off the walls when they were not used for a week. If they were the wouldn't be kept on the property because they would cause to much trouble!!! So yes kelpies need exercise and mental stimulation, but not as much as people who have never experienced the breed would think. Particularly if you ask for a quiet puppy! One of my dogs lives with my elderly grandparents- he doesn't get walked an awful lot (aka probably less than one walk a day, and when he does get walked it is at their very slow pace), because they are not up to it but he comes to shows with me on weekends and does an obedience class every few weeks etc. And he is more than happy, even as a pup although I did take him out more. They live in suburbia- I just made sure they didn't get a particularly high drive dog. He is a cuddle pot and just loves spending the day following them round, and sitting under tables so he isn't a trip hazard etc. He is happy there which is what is important. This breed thrives more on pleasing owners then they do on simply exercise. I also know one lady with three kelpies and not one of them will go out and be her jogging companion- they all much prefer to be patrolling the back yard etc. So I guess what I am saying there is a lot of breed variation, so asking around a few breeders for a pup that would suit, or getting a rescue adult would be my recommendation, same as a GR or Lab. I dont normally recommend kelpies, but it would certainly be an option in this case.
  14. If he wants a dog that WANTS attention, I dont think you can reliably get that from a Lapphund. I barely see Demi all day because she is little miss independent, but appart from that I think it would be a good fit. She likes to greet new people, but wouldnt call her a dog that wants attention at home. It just depends if he does want a velcro dog, or a dog that is more independent. Kelpie- would depend on how much time he wants to give it. I have an injury so mine haven't been walk for over a week and they dont really care, so long as they can be in the same room as me so would thrive being able to go to work. Generally they get walked when I have time, play fetch everyday in the back yard, and go to training 1-2 times per week. Two of the dogs I have bred go to doggy day care and they are very happy and social there. They also have quite a high tolerance level- I grew up with one and it dealt with pegs on its ears (i think i was 3 at the time), being ridden because I wanted a pony, being 'trained' by me, having me play with her food etc. So from a good breeder I could defiantly say kelpies are great with kids. My current Kelpies have not had much socialisation with kids, but all know to stand quietly around miniature humans, lie down with the miniature miniature humans (babies), and they will all find me if they have had enough of what the kids are doing to them. Kelpies are also 'dobbers'. I was forever being found doing something naughty because Kala would run inside and bark at my mum and bring her out to me!!!! With good advice I think a kelpie can be owned by someone not dog savvy. You just need someone to let you know when they see the dog training YOU to do something for them, instead of you training the dog!!
  15. I dislike it for more reasons than just the smoke. I have nearly had a dog burnt when someone was holding a cigarette and the dog thought it was a treat and went to take it. I also dislike seeing people with a cigarette in one hand and a dog going crazy in the other (at agility or flyball). I think its a recipe for disaster. I might be influenced by the fact that I walked into a cigarette when I was about 5yrs old and got burnt!!!
  16. Oh one I missed You are watching TV and you get pawed for an hr because you are not 1- watching their tricks 2- throwing their ball 3- training them I regret ever teaching Abby and Demi how to paw!!
  17. I have ordered 2 sets of the toy ones I figure I can mark the second set with permanent markers if necessary, and if she only has 7 then I have some for next time. No nerves Mollipop!! Happy Happy thoughts only I am hoping for solid chocolates this time (the white markings are undesirable) so 9 chocolate kelpies will defiantly need ID. In the end the boys were told apart because one grew in 8 white hairs in-between underneath his back left foot when he was 4 weeks old LMAO. Bluey got his name because he wore red nail polish for the first three weeks of his life. Found out red isnt a good colour as I had a few freak out moments when I thought someone was bleeding but it was just him flashing his nails. I might crack out the nailpolish again for the first couple of days (yay more shopping)
  18. You still go to training a few days after ankle surgery and are on crutches to watch a class so you don't miss out on learning anything for them When you set up a crate and leave the door closed and you have three dogs bashing on it to try and get in (only up to step 3 of crate games lol)
  19. THANK YOU!!!! Did you put them on straight away as they were born?
  20. I am completely paranoid about puppies being squished. She was a good mum but would jump up when people went into the kitchen, and not look where she was going in order to see if she was getting food. All of her toys had to be confiscated and replaced with light ones because she would drop them in the box for us to throw when we were looking at the pups. Mind you when pups got older and we put them in a play pen we would wake up in the morning and she would have jumped in and out to get ALL their toys and stash them in her crate!!!
