I have been spending soooo much more time looking at puppies and older dogs and just doing the three main lines. Its amazing how much more I can see after her seminar. As an aside- if anyone uses her method on puppies I would be happy to be a scribe I am really interested to see more litters!

On lead sounds great- I will have a puppy and one of my quiet dogs do that works for me How about 10am. I am fine with either Parra park or Doonside

Really Good luck with the doorstoppers. Honestly, really good luck. (Laughing so hard I am struggling to breath!!) Demi is either left in a house that has NOTHING on the benches (and that includes the 1.5m high TV cabinet)- and I really mean nothing. Or she is left in a crate that has the ends cabletied!!! Yup she believes everything on the benches belongs on the floor and has worked out how to open the solid ends of the crate to escape....... Then there is nothing more joyous than finding a half chewed rawhide bone at the end of your bed. I have never seen her go under the covers but they do end up at feet level And when you squeal she comes to see what is wrong and pats you on the head, followed by a joyous and happy reunion with her bone leaving her to frolic off with it while I recover from the fright! I Lufs Demi sooooo much

Just thought I would let anyone who went to the sydney seminar know that Pat's pick boy and girl from the litter are in their first show this sat at Castle Hill There is even an outside chance that one of them will make gait on all four feet

Oh and the other supplement I use is LIVAMOL. I know a lot of spitz show people use it- I have found that it improves coat and skin but it is also high in protein so adds some extra calories It makes the kelpies nice and dark and since then my other flaky skin girl has been eating whatever I have lying around without any flakes lol. I dont blame you for keeping kibble in the diet- half my dogs are on straight kibble, the other on a mix of kibble and raw because making veggies up for 8 dogs in a monthly batch was getting a bit much I do however still try and give them some steamed veggies once a week which they quite enjoy. Ultimately it will just be a matter of searching around, and finding what works for her......
-
I would be adding flaxseed oil to whatever your feeding. With one of my boys I ended up feeding him raw with eagle pack or artemis kibble when I am lazy. He got dandruff when he was on Black Hawk, and it went dry when I won some advance and used that- my other dog still looked fine so I know it isnt the food. So now he gets meat and veggies in the morning- I do a big batch each month that I add oil too so it is easy to get out in the morning, then Vets all natural and meat/bones of a night. So perhaps adding some elements of raw to her diet might do something?
-
Hmmmm well all the dog toys are currently outside in the rain (Lapphunds) and I have spent all morning looking for the collection of stones that someone has stashed SOMEWHERE in the house (kelpies). Why wont the kelpies bring in the toys and stash them instead????

To All The People Who Are Not Sure About Desexing Under 12 Months
Jumabaar replied to KOE's topic in General Dog Discussion
OLiver was desexed at 6 years and he looks like that no tuck. As I said everyone has their own opinions I agree with early desexing, have 2 with no problems and they are now 7 and 5, so still waiting to see.The DIL's maltese was early desexed and is now 3 and she is a normal size as well. And I never said it proves anything, just putting it out there, everyone is entitled to their opinion and when newbies come to the forum asking advise and get jumped on for mentioning early desexing, that their dog wont grow properly etc etc well they can look at it from another perpective. And saying that bitches WILL be incontintent is a load of pigsfaluky . My old Vizsla desexed at 10 was incontinent from the operation, Kim desexed at about 6 or 7 isnt, DIL's malt is not incontinent either. There are also dogs around and the owners are dol members who did not desex until 14 months and those dogs are oversize etc. But that is their story not mine. And I will stand by the fact that more early desexing will eventually lead to less animals in the pound, because if there were no uterus's and testicles except for breeding animals then there will be less animals. But just because there are less animals around how does that mean that there will be less dumped dogs? As far as I know a large proportion of animals are dumped after puppy stage. So they are finding homes, but people are getting tired of them. This is somewhat because puppies are freely available, but mostly because people have not placed a high enough value on choosing the correct pet, or doing any training with them. I could understand saying that less animals would decrease the numbers in pounds if MOST pound animals were puppies (that couldnt find homes) but I dont think this is the case. More emphasis should be placed on educating the public than focusing on early desexing IMO. -
You might just have to come to another show to meet the little muffins. They were EXHAUSTED by the time we left- they 'manned' the stand so to speak while all the big dogs were being shown lol. I am glad you had a nice day.

To All The People Who Are Not Sure About Desexing Under 12 Months
Jumabaar replied to KOE's topic in General Dog Discussion
I dont understand- Bitches having a uterus, dogs having testicles does not add to the number of dogs in pound/rescue... Irresponsible owners not keeping said entire animals from having litters but them being entire does not inherently cause them to have puppies. Further I think it is Australian Society's lack of emphasis on pets being a privilege that should be cherished, rather than a right and object that can be disposed of has a far greater effect on pound numbers. I always advocate people to look at their own situation- can they contain/supervise an entire animal till 18mths before the desex. If not they should desex. Although I would also point out if they can not do that then why are they getting a dog because their containment is clearly not adequate and they should invest in a stuffed toy instead...... (disclaimer- I know some bitches that have gone through garage doors so do make it difficult but people have still managed to stop them from becoming pregnant, either through careful supervision or desexing) I dont think emotion should really come into this debate at all- rather the individual situation of each dog and family that they live in. I am not against early desexing for individuals that chose to do it, but I also do not think people should be made feel like it is the only way to solve a very complex issue. I hope this boy finds a loving forever home. -
I was there with my 4 puppies- didnt recognise anyone. It was a little slow where the Kelpie stand was but I still had fun showing the girls off I did walk around a little but didnt make it everywhere.
-
I will have a small tribe of Kelpie pups on the Kelpie club stand. And will have Demi the Finnish Lapphund on the Delta stand. Well at least until puppies get ratty or it becomes to wet....

I had to make the decision to put Yellow to sleep last night. He ended up bleeding into the muscles under his tongue. I thought I could just watch it and hope that it resolved, but it eventually became clear that it wasn't stopping. He had a big dinner, and got to play fetch and bounce of the walls, and generally do everything naughty that we had been trying to stop him from doing. In the end the decision was clear- he wasnt able to shut his mouth and I was worried about asphyxiation. The vet and interns and receptionist were all just as upset- he had really made his mark on everyone he met. All the more hard because he was still a happy puppy but he wasnt in too much pain, so I am glad I didnt wait. RIP Yellow "Jumabaar a Nobel Heart" Run free with Teddy and Red

That was Dante....he's so awesome at costing money. That was cheap..............it cost me way over twice that! That was middle of the night emergency surgery, a couple of plasma transfusions, 3 days in hospital, IV fluids, multiple blood tests, lots of drugs....................... Hope he's okay and it's nothing serious. I am willing to swap vet bills too. My chicken bone cost me many thousands and he will never eat a normal meal again. A lot of complications and a 6mth recovery period makes for very expensive vet bills. It gets to the point where you don't want to keep track. Glad to hear he is feeling better. Sigh...... Tell me about it. I am glad he is interested in food!!

I am not entered but will be moving from the Kelpie stand with four little bubs and the Delta stand. So if you see someone going crazy with four Bubby Kelpies and a Finnish Lapphund in a Bright red top come over and say hello!! I am just putting in their show first entries today- finally got them registered lol so I might see you around ETA- It was reasonably busy last year but not crazy. I was only there for an hour or so as my bitch decided to come on heat part way through the day (they boys kindly let me know and with the public around it just wasnt worth hanging around lol)
-
I am another one that would vote for a Lapphund! There are some very quiet lines around that would be more than suitable. ETA- She is very calm, but always has a wonderful big smile and tail wag for everyone she meets. She likes to be in the same room as me, but not clingy like my kelpies. She is happy to sit at home all day with me studying or going for a wander down to the park for a few hours. I guess she is the dog that I take everywhere with me because she isn't a hassle and just 'hangs out'. I have been well known to forget to put her in her crate at shows because she will curl up in a chair for a snooze. I loves her

If its the same brand dog food, changing over would be fine Its when you use cheaper products and then go to a quality food is the issue Quality dog food takes time for dogs to get used to. They do absorb the food and get the benifits out of it Where the cheaper food goes in one end and comes out the other and there system is not absorbing anything If you feed a cheap brand of dog food and go to a quality brand of dog food you will notice the the difference in the dogs stools they would be less They absorb most of the food Hopes this helps It really isnt the quality of dog food that will cause the issue- particularly not going from crap to good quality!! It really depends on the dog as to how big a reaction they will have to food changes. Does your dog tolerate cooked chicken and rice? If so I would pop him on this for a few days to give his system a little time to settle down and resolve any issues. If not does he tolerate any other food well? It would be better to get his system back to equilibrium so you can actually see if the new food does agree with him. ETA- another vote for adding cooked pumpkin to the mix- I use it for constipation and diarrhoea and it appears to help.

(snipped) This used to irritate the hell out of me (owning/ showing a giant breed) - not being able to walk near the toy ring without dogs going off simply because he walked past. My giant actually did have an issue with the trolleys full of abuse but many toy owners seem to have no issue with their dog's behaviour. In my breed your dog gets roused on pretty damn quick if it barks at another. I could not agree with you more!!! Another massive agreement with this!! Mine is a medium sized breed, and sometimes I NEED to go through the toy area and it is horrid!! Give me one pet dog to deal with over a trolly full of undisciplined show dogs around the toy ring any day.

I hope everything is OK

Hd On A Pup Who Is Only 16 Weeks Old?
Jumabaar replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I dont think that this can be a blanket statement!! There would be some cases where this surgery is required- and I am sure in some cases it would be clear from x-rays done by the local vet that it is necessary. As a general rule though I do believe pups should be looked at by a specialist before this type of surgery. I have found that specialists do a much better job at stressing post operative care than local vets!! You have to remember that often it is not about the money for these vets- but trying to prevent pain/suffering later in life. Perhaps misguided, but until the general public become educated, and start asking for referrals then this will continue. I think vets also need to be educated- that they should send x-rays off for second opinions, that they need to make sure the x-rays are good quality and that they should be offering referrals for these surgeries. Not sure how this happens, but I guess by breeders doing a good job and keeping up to date, and educating their vets, and their puppy owners vets it is a start. -
I am leaving half an hour to pick up the little bloke. We have renovated the back yard to make a small outdoor pen for him so he is separated from my other dogs, and will be crated when no one is home. My older dogs are very calm, so he can interact with them supervised in the house. I am second guessing my decisions, but feel that I need to give him a chance at a life. The focus will be on Quality..... Bloods are going to be sent off on monday to test a whole range of factors- just incase it is Haemophilia B and a factor 9 deficiency (a possibility with how sever the first two boys conditions were) which can not be tested here in Aus. It will also tell me which of the girls are carriers, and means that if they are carriers I can inform owners. There is a very small risk of extended bleeding with carriers during extensive surgeries, so something good for their vet to be aware off.

When I posted this idea it was to generate discussion and it has,it has never been my aim to disadvantage any clubs and I am aware that some areas' are already disadvantaged to some degree ,purely by their location. We have all had our fair share of judges that we would not wish to revisit and I understand the problem and as you commented, bad judging can also give you the personal motivation to further achieve.Grooming certain breeds can be a very hard and long process and finally to arrive and be badly judged is sadly all part of the process that we have to accept.I agree with your comment re the quality of the consistent winning dogs' and the idea was born from the regular results in our journal showing a lot of these quality dogs' being carted about the countryside blatantly following a particular judge. If the dog is so good and some are. why not show against the best competition. Why do we have to accept it? The only way I know of to get rid of bad judges is to not enter under them. I figure if they keep getting low entires show secs will realise using them is not doing their club any favours money wise. By taking away my right to not enter judges, I am losing my form of protesting against them!! Note- this may not mean they are a face judge, but a judge that handles exhibits roughly for example. IMO bad judging is bad judging. It doesnt motivate me, it makes me avoid the judge!! If you do not know who is judging, dont ' you think that may go some way to prevent "those faces " following judges? all over the country.By simply not showing again under a bad judge does' nothing to halt 'face judging ' simply neither the club or the judge would know that you were displeased, because another exhibitor simply takes your place, and so it goes' on. Because its not just face judging that I am worried about!! Nothing is ever going to stop that, because people who are faces, generally also have friends everywhere so they are going to find out about it all anyway!! I am MORE concerned about judges that truly do not know a good example of my breed. So they may award a complete nobody, and I can see better dogs on the day so I wont enter under them again because I do not value their opinion. Or judges that just award the fastest dog in the ring, judges that are rough with my dogs. I know that some judges have not been used for shows because people know that they wont get big entries under them. Perhaps we should be recording how many enter under judges so that we can track their 'popularity' so to speak. So when people avoid a judge it will become apparent to show secs and they can chose judges that are more popular with the majority of competitors?? Sounds like a better method to increase numbers and weed out bad judges than not listing them.

A quick update. Yellow is spending a few days in hospital to let his system settle down and try and eliminate the risk of any further injuries while his clotting product levels are really low. His cut in his month is quite a bad one and is still oozing a little bit at times. Our vet is thinking about stitching it but we will see how he goes. We have arranged to send blood samples for all the dogs to Cornell University on Monday and will have results back by the end of the week. Crossing fingers and paws that when we get those back they are good.
