Persistence And Extinction Curves
Jumabaar replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Demi's extinction curve is a plummet straight down. I have had to reteach soooo many behaviours because there is no extinction burst, she just stops doing them if they are left more than a few days without reinforcement. i.e.- I have taught drop 6 times in the past 2 years and unless I am continually practicing it just disappears and I have to reteach. This can happen in the space of a weeks so Really frustrating! Abby's extinction curve.... well there isn't one. Once a behaviour has been taught thats it- I don't have a choice that is the way the behaviour remains regardless of me every rewarding it again. It is useful because there is never any retraining, painful because any bad habits have to eliminated by punishment rather than ignored, and even then she generally only stops temporarily before starting again. i.e. walking on the table- I taught her to get on the bed via a small coffee table and she generalised this to ALL tables and 3years later I am still embarrassed to go to a friends house and have abby get on their table! Abby has no trouble coping with novel stimuli. Nor does Demi. I much prefer most of my other dogs with more moderate extinction curves. Long enough to capture a behaviour reliably and fix it over a few weeks and have it last for a few months. But not so long that annoying traits and things that I want to retrain are impossible. -
Just wondering how people have found the Jafco with ventilation? I had suggested it to a friend, but was reconsidering suggesting this one http://www.k9pro.com.au/products/Lightweight-Plastic-Basket-muzzle-.html because it would give better ventilation.

I don't think a person has to be a judge to be a 'face', to me it is a person who has a reputation of winning. --------------- Yes, I see face judging happening, particularly noticeable when you have judges who will be doing your breed in the next few months hanging around the breed ring to see who is getting put up But I don't think that story reflects badly on the person who originally wore green IMO. It reflects poorly on the judge who just assumed that they BC person in the Green suit always wins so I will put them up. That judge should have looked at the dogs he was judging and realised it was not quality. Sometimes it isn't the exhibitors fault that they are being positively face judged either I guess. Your friend doesn't look for it but enough GOOD judges have seen her dogs quality so the ones who are not as good don't bother to think for themselves. I think face judging can also reflect judges who don't know breed standards, are a little lazy or not confident in their own opinion.

The vet isn't certifying that the dog is not a Dangerous Dog, they would only be commenting on the breed. So that should not be a problem. I have always thought along your lines. If a council worker is accepted as being able to pick a breed or cross, why would the word of a vet not be taken! Same idea, just the other way around. It is actually very honest of AVA to say that they can't pick a breed as we know. They seem to be the ones telling the facts here I think. I was more thinking if a victim suing a vet for incorrect identification if there was a dog attack if they could get another witness to say it should not have been identified as a non-restircted breed. It has nothing to do with it being dangerous. I agree about the AVA being honest. Its a shame when so many animal bodies- AVA, individual vets and trainers all saying the same thing but no one appears to be listening!!
-
I am just guessing but what the AVA is doing might help a law suit? I mean if a Vet who has spent 5 years studying dogs says they can not say if a dog is a restricted breed then surely a lawyer can use this when a ranger ID's a dog? I am guessing they are just trying to make it clear as an Association they do not support the legislation in any way and will not help the govt. I do however think individual vets will still sign these certs to say that the dog is not a restricted breed- honestly they will want to keep their clients alive!! What are the repercussions of a vet who says it is not a restricted breed, then the animal does attack someone and someone else identifies it differently AKA another vet?? Its just a mess!

I found the same thing. I was missing heaps of shots (out of focus) when I borrowed a 7D that I could easily get on a 50D. 6mths on and I have improved out of sight! Good luck- jealous!! I want my own one!
-
I agree with this too!! I think a judge is facy when completely different types are put up, and you see a handler suddenly handle breeds (I counted 6 at one show) that they have never shown before and they all get BOB.... Although I think shame on that exhibitor as much as the judge. I have probably only seen blatant face judging 7 or 8 times in the past 5 years so not all that common.
-
The worst example I know was when a breed club was told their Judge was going to face judge and they chose to do nothing about it. It was a complete waste of entries for all involved. It was not the judges opinion on the day

How Do You Know When The Time Is Right
Jumabaar replied to nattiej1976's topic in General Dog Discussion
nattiej- big hugs. What your feeling is perfectly fine. You are not replacing Kato by any means, if you have done the research it means that on some level you are ready and your right, fate might just be bumping things your way. Even if this pup doesn't work out you will still get some puppy love when you visit! This pup isn't a replacement, it is a new experience that won't fill the gap that kato left, but worm into your heart just the same. -
WONDERFUL NEWS!!!

My first litter was vaccinated at 8 and 12. I did it at 6 weeks this time because there is a small benefit and I wanted pups to be fully vaccinated at 10 weeks and with a requirement of four weeks between vaccination I had to do it at 6. It is actually possible to wait till 10weeks and just give one nobivac vaccination, which I will be seriously considering with my next litter although it will mean owners have to wait till 10weeks and 3 days to get their pups.

6 weeks C3 10 weeks C5 15mths C5 then every three years using Nobivac. *C7 is only required in certain regions in australia

Wow the ones found in homes must be extra deadly- you know because they are actually being contained and looked after  RIP poor dogs

Plus one for a martingale for walking. If you also want a harness then look at the Ruff wear Web Master harness http://www.caninespirit.com.au/master_products/web-master-harness. My girl used to slip out of her harness in the car and since swapping onto this she has not managed to escape. It is also handy if you need to pick them up to keep them dry etc. It is often cheaper to get them in the US even with shipping.

Council Shocked As Dog Owners Offer Pit Bulls For Death
Jumabaar replied to silentchild's topic in In The News
Even if the owners didn't want the dogs living under the shadow of the "dangerous dog" tag they should still have had the courage to have the dogs humanely killed by a vet rather than dumping them at the pound. I agree with this I would NEVER let one of mine go without me, and not for something like this- must not have read it properly. Although it is still better than them being poorly treated for the rest of their life in a cage with the owner ignoring them because it is too hard to get them out. -
Council Shocked As Dog Owners Offer Pit Bulls For Death
Jumabaar replied to silentchild's topic in In The News
It may also be that the owner didn't want these dogs living a life as a 'dangerous dog'. Yes it is possible for someone to put the time into dogs with this label and all the associated restrictions, but if that is not possible for them then perhaps they did the right thing. Shame on COUNCIL for putting silly restrictions like this on dogs because of who their parents are! -
Client Showed Up At The Door With Dog -
Jumabaar replied to Andisa's topic in General Dog Discussion
Abuse? Big call for someone who wasn't there I think. If a scruffing and a yelling ONCE delivers the goods, it sure beats hell out of having to have the dog rendered incapable of moving in a grooming harness or sedated to groom it. Exactly HOW else would you recommend any groomer groom a dog that won't stand? Have you got any experience at all in dog grooming? I think I know the answer. It's dangerous to groomer and dog to try to clip a squirming animal. Perhaps a few hours in a grooming salon might be educative. It also beats the animal being so matted it can't walk or soiled pants creating the perfect environment for it to become fly blown?? That is much more painful than what a good groomer will do to an unruly animal! And who says an owner won't be turned away from every groomer? where does it leave to poor dog?? To the OP- Let it all out!! -
Scales- although it is unlikely to be a female affected it IS possible. Males that are only slightly affected may be bred from to a carrier bitch to produce an affected female. It has happened in the past so please do not say that females can not be affected with Haemophillia. Also it is possible for it to be a mutation- as I believe has happened in my bitch resulting in me having a litter that had affected males. I am waiting on blood results to know that my four year old dogs are not affected before I use them at stud because they have never had surgery so it is a slim possibility that they have enough factor 8 to live their everyday life- once again unlikely but I never want to put another happy puppy to sleep . It has NEVER been recorded in my breed before- 30% of cases are caused by a mutation and there is no prior history so it can pop up out of nowhere regardless of a clear history. I only included it to allow the breeder to test and I acknowledge that it is a slim chance of it being factor 8. It sounds like the real cause of death will never be ascertained so giving the breeder as much chance to check their lines for their own peace of mind is only fair. The OP didn't sound like they were accusing the breeder- genetics is not clear cut but informing the breeder of a list of possible causes of death be they environment or congenital (and then if they are heritable or not) is the only way for the breeder to make their own informed decisions on what to do with the parents of this dog. It is NOT about accusations, it is about sharing information and learning. Ltigher773- your breeder will completely understand your pain. Don't be afraid of crying or that you didn't save her. You sound like a wonderful caring owner and that your girl was loved, which is all a breeder can ask for. I hope you find some closure when you go back and talk to your vet. It will take time to get through this so don't pressure yourself.

German Shepherds may suffer from a disease known as Haemophillia A. In these dogs there is insufficient amounts of the clotting factor 8 and it is possible for dog to bleed out at any age. It is uncommon for it to show up in female puppies as it is sex linked and usually only seen in males It should be possible for the breeder to test for this and (von willerbrands factor) to ensure their dogs are not carriers of these genes to preserve their lines. I do not think von willerbrands of Haemophillia B are common in GS but are also differentials for dogs that bleed out. I am in no way saying this is what happened but when you let your breeder know about the differential diagnosis these should be included- they are testable and can offer the breeder great peace of mind about preventing this happening to any future puppy owners. My condolences for your loss- make sure that your partner knows that it is perfectly normal to grieve, and you too!
