Here too- thankful that the pups are all snoozing quietly. I think all the crazy scary sounds playing from 2 weeks of age worked again! Only one dog alerted twice and looked pretty bloody embarrassed when they realised no one else woke up so they piled back on the others and went to sleep!

Good luck for the new year!!

Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
Jumabaar replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think the local vet thought I was dumping a dog that was actually one that I picked up roaming in a local park while the primary school had their sports day (teachers didn't seem to mind a medium sized dog that no one owned wondering around interacting with kids with no supervision ) However after the fourth dog dropped off they know I am just the local do-gooder who always stops and opens the car door when I see a dog on the street. I did make me wonder how many 'strays' are dropped off to the vet by their family who dont want to surrender the dog themselves..... -
I agree with you. Selling (or more to the point, buying) a 4 week old pup is downright idiotic. I wasn't targeting your posts and appologise if it appeared that way. No, its all good. I stuffed up anyway saying it was illegal. I have already included in this thread that it IS ILLEGAL here in NSW to sell a pup prior to 8 weeks of age. It is not just ANKC breeder that must abide by this, it is anyone who partakes in breeding of dogs. For those that did not read the first page: Failure to meet this standard:

If you do look into a Lappie for agility- make sure it is from lines that do some performance work already. There are some very chilled out individuals that do have an 'on switch' but you need to turn yourself inside out to flip it (or go to herding in my girls case), other lines have a much more easily found on switch! My girl is proving not so easy to train for agility- she keeps asking me why we are doing these things, but she is doing better at flyball because the other dogs rev her up more. I looooove the look of a Britany but have not actually managed to meet one in the flesh yet

Not sad at all. We have been looking at caravans, camper trailers, pop top campers and even horse floats for a while now trying to find a floor plan that would best suit four large dog crates. I wish there was a company that made a dog trailer/ camper combination under 20K. Thanks for making me feel a little better!!

I saw an old caravan last night for 2k (that I think would sell for 1k) and if I had ANY faith in myself at all I would have just bought it. But I am simply hopeless at building anything that remains built!! It needed to be gutted which would have suited me fine- it was something about the wheels that I thought was beyond me. Is it sad that I have almost decided on how I want the caravan set up, even though I won't be able to afford one for another few years

Chemical Castration As A Short Term Solution?
Jumabaar replied to samjohn's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree that the aggression is probably not hormone based but I agree that preventing the hormones kicking in is probably a good thing as well. The implant works in three weeks and lasts for 12 mths, so it may very well be a good option to allow him to recover from the tick. So I guess I would suggest talking to a vet about Superlorin and talking to a behaviourist about the aggression- two separate people for two separate problems -
Bugger about the C5 policy though my dogs are only titre tested

Thanks, did the vet recommend this? I cant stand the smell of Epi-otic anymore, especially when it ends up all over you I have 2.5% vinegar in one of my handbooks as a good ear cleaner, in the same list as Epi-otic and PAWS. So yup vets do recommend this.

Oh wow it sounds like you do some amazing things with your dogs!! Do you do exhibitions with them for the Drafting and water training? PS I am seriously jealous about the caravan. I am desperate to try and get a job that will fit in with uni so I can buy one!! Camping is just not cutting it anymore,

I find that I have to go with what my dogs do well on. So buying 4 bags up front would be a big ask as I can't be sure their coats will all stay glossy, that I will be happy with their stools etc. I also found that I couldn't compare how much I was paying per kilo, I had to compare how much I was paying to keep condition on my dogs. Some of the cheaper foods I tried ended up costing as much as the more expensive brands because I had to use more per dog per day to keep weight on them. My dogs do flyball, show and do agility etc so I notice the difference quickly when the food is not giving them enough. Personally I prefer foods with only one meat source- so only chicken or only beef etc. This means if a dog disagrees with their food I can look at changing the protein source and seeing how that goes. I think you need to initially decide on a brand, buy a bag and see how your dogs go with it because they don't read the labels so you can only give it a go!

I didn't get the brown trout kelpie one last year- the pictures just were not that amazing, and I don't think all the kelpies were.... kelpies lol. I am hoping that I can stop being lazy and do my own calendar this year!!

I am not brave enough to look. I have it spread between two houses- which both have two cupboards full of dog stuff. I am too scared to even look at what I have sitting in the car, but off the top of my head I would have 8 leads alone in there, plus three collars, a 5L water container, two water bowls, 3 crates, crate covers, beds, treats, treat bags, long line, tennis balls, a tug or two, two spare harnesses, flyball harnesses...... Yeah waaaaay to scary to open the cupboard None of my old equipment could even be donated to rescue- if I stop using it then its completely trashed and probably been recycled for a few different uses by then!

Thankyou Juice. Just away to head to the homebush clinic now. Just like you said, I'm just not sure if it is an ear infection with the lack of smell. I tried to wipe it a little just now but it's obviously painfull, deffinatly not a laceration and deffinatly coming from somewhere deep in the canal. I'll post back when I know. Thanks for the offer juice, much appreciated You couldn't be heading towards a nicer bunch of people (having spent a fair amount of time there this year). I hope they are able to get the bottom of this!

Hi mace. Its a very interesting point that you make about. Now that I think about it our dogs never saw the inside of a Veterinary Clinic either. If fact, I can't tell you where the Veterinary Clinics were or if there were any other than The Lort Smith. Nowadays, there's practically a Vet on every corner. I can't count the number in Lismore/Goonellabah and there are only about six people in the whole town. (I don't know who all the other people are. I think they're like the grey wanderers :D) Px In those days did you remove a dogs tooth if it was fractured? Did you get bitches desexed? Were there as MANY cars on the road, and people willing to pay to get their dog treated if they were hit? I think there are more reasons for vets because people are willing to pay to keep their dogs in optimal welfare ;) Also back in the good old days was there as much 'junk' in dog kibble- the products that they used to use in them were cheaper and profit margins not so huge.

Just checking- I don't vaccinate for kennel cough (and titre test the rest). 1- so long as I get a vet to say that they recommend this it should be fine 2- what about my 'non' breeding dogs. the ones who are desexed- do they need to live under the same 'conditions' as my breeding animals. What about breeding prospects, that may end up desexed without having had or sired a litter?? My dogs are pets, in 6.5 years I have had two litters, and under these rules I can't own a cat because I don't have a cattery and would want it to be part of the family in with the dogs (assuming dogs and cat were happy with this). I KNOW I don't comply with all these things- but my vets can all tell you that my animals welfare come first (well and truly before my bank balance and myself!). But at the same time- for all the numptys out there I am glad. I mean I was able to quote the code in here. And I will be tempted to print it out for all the future numptys I meet. If they were policed by breeders who understood what happens and vets who have worked with breeders then this code could work. But I doubt it will be- so I will be going through it with a fine tooth comb to make sure I can tick all the boxes...
-
The above is directly quoted from the NSW code. It has has always been highly recommended to wait till 8 weeks for socialisation purposes. Also if the dog is registered DogsNSW code indicate 8 weeks minimum for the pup to leave home, and at least two weeks after its first vaccination. Please pass this on to your cousin as they are in breach of the code of ethics that is set out to protect buyers and the dogs themselves.
-
Nope my last litter was in Feb and I received this a few weeks ago. Its a bit of a joke for small time breeders but fair enough for anyone who runs a business.
-
According to the NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice- Breeding dogs and cats your cousin should not have let this pup leave the litter Failure to meet this standard: Also from the code You should have received information regarding the exercise requirements of your pup. Perhaps suggest to your cousin they do a little more research before their next litter.

Oh nooooooes I can't have the light on anymore after 8:30pm!! That will make studying next year rather difficult. That or I need to kick the sleeping dog off the bed next to me and crate them in a room with the light off

Aloysha we were going to try to do a show between the breed and group at The Roayl in Canberra but sadly I cant find one, I am hoping that we may be lucky enough to get to a few NSW shows this year. The breed and Group Specials are on the same day at Canberra Royal. If you don't get through to General Specials you can do the Wollongong Shows on Saturday and Sunday http://ozentries.com.au/schedule/0312wollongong.pdf Thanks Havasneeze I worded it wrong, we are at The Sydney Royal and I was looking for a show on the Friday or Sat in April 13th 14th, was looking for a show in Canberra area or Sydney but could not find any, sorry for the confusion. That time of year is all specialties so no all breed shows on.

I second a quick visit to the vet for a health check and some advice. Has the pup had its first vaccination and has it been wormed? Up till about 5mths of age my kelpies mostly romp around the back yard as opposed to actually going for walks- we go out but it is mostly about letting them sniff and teaching them that I am an amazing treat vending machine if they stay close to me . You little mate would probably be the same.

Ok that's a best case scenario!!! My last dog took 12 months to learn how to learn before she started training (what was I thinking with a rescue dog) and then took 12 months to get it right, but as I have said before the time was well spent her box turns belong on a spring loaded DVD and her very first run was 4.6 seconds!!! Our super smart Aussie is so blond he took 2 years...... On the other hand we have a new JRT at beginner class that picked it up in less than 2 months (just to annoy us all)....But my much better half has been doing this a LONG time and she tells me it should take 6 - 12 months (did I mention the Aussie above is her dog). Its always the people new to flyball that manage to get their dog running quick. The Kelpies have all learnt it in a month or two then spent months proofing (or testing me as I think they are actually doing). Bluey can run 4.2 in a team in any position, but can't run NEXT to a team so is being trained form scratch! The Lapphund...... Well lets just not talk about that one
-
Yup I tell people my boys have been chemically castrated. Saves the idiots following me although with kelpies its not a problem and I tell people my female Finnish Lapphund is desexed.
