If entire pups are only sold to registered breeders where does the next generation of breeders and showers come from? ANKC registered dogs are already in trouble number wise and attitudes like this just put another nail in the coffin. ETA How do you decide who is ethical and what ethical is? It took me two years to decide to become a breeder and apply for my prefix. As a 'pet owner' prior to that I was able to keep my bitch from mating any dog with testicles that walked down the street!! Why cant someone with no intention of breeding make the decision not to alter their dog. Or alter it at a time of their choosing- both after consultation with the breeder with respect to the risks in their lines of dogs as well as a well informed vet. I am not sure what the difference between an ethical pet owner making an informed choice and an ethical breeder making an informed choice??? Many ethical breeders also think of themselves as ethical pet owners!!

Christine rang me & we chatted for 34 minutes. Plan of attack - see my vet tomorrow, Christine knows her & said to pass on her regards, - get my vet's opinion on what needs doing & see if she thinks he needs to see Christine & if not for my own piece of mind... - go see Christine anyway for a 2nd opinion. My vet feels quite confident that the lateral incisor needs removing. It will be taken out on Monday when he will also get desexed, retained testicles, sooner than I had planned when I first got him. Christine gave her well wishes for the procedure & said to watch how his bite goes once the tooth is removed & frees up the canine that's hitting against the incisor. Positive vibes please for a positive outcome. Oh's not fussed on spending too much on pets nor is my son who talked me into getting Panda in the 1st place he says it's not bothering him so leave well enough alone. Not my feelings as Panda doesn't like you to touch his mouth. I think this means next time the son or husband gets sick/injured you get a free day and tell them that they just need to suck it up like they wanted Panda too!! Positive 'tooth moving into correct space' vibes!!

Grass Eating - Are They Sick?
Jumabaar replied to LOLAFOLATA's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dogs have a "Im feeling sick and HAVE to eat grass right now" dance. They eat it quite urgently. But 90% of the time they go out they will have a bit of a graze, generally being very picky about who gets the best tips. Very cute!! -
I think its very location dependant. There are some flea hot spots here in sydney that it doesnt matter what people do its a constant battle. My mums place gets a flea infestation every November (although this year it happened in Jan) so she gets in during october and treats twice which is usually enough to keep everything under control. I treat for ticks when I go into a tick area- with a large coated breed I want some back up as well as doing tick checks. Your lucky living where you do- safe from so many nasties!!

How will breeding from a Limited Reg dog effect the legacy of a prefix Or introduce defects to the pedigree Main Reg gene pool? Limited Reg are pups that go to homes who do not intend to show or breed. Limited Reg does not nec. mean that puppy is not of show / breed potential. Re the bolded text above: you may want to consider why most of the world dont follow this desex fervor. I was going to highlight exactly the same sentence. Desexing is routine yes........ safe- well not really no GA is considered safe. Also what are the emotional benefits to the dog- I assume you are anthropomorphising as much as the OP on that one. My pups will go out on a desexing contract but that wont mean that I dont talk to the owner. If they can give me a valid reason to not have the procedure and they understand that the dog is not to be bred from then I cant see why a responsible owner cant keep an entire animal. I mean I have for the past 6yrs so why cant someone else?? If I didnt think the owner were responsible enough to do this they wouldnt be getting one of my pups! ETA having an entire male dog does mean they need all the relevant health checks done regularly. I desex bitches after maturity because pyo is scary!

I'd guess there is no genetic test, and it would be good to have more information from the vet opthamologist . . . not filtered by a journalist . . .to make any pronouncement about what happened here. I did do some research regarding testing but everything goes out the window when you start dealing with 'Labtrevers'.......

Also did anyone else notice the strange head bob one of the black pups was doing??

Ring Christine- she is more than happy to chat to you before going in. She is AMAZING and has amazing results. I have gone and seen her and its worth every cent for the service she gives. Full anaesthetic monitoring by a dedicated nurse, amazing surgical technique etc. Also she doesn't cut corners like a few other vets that are offering cheaper treatments.

Blind puppies find homes Link to video http://video.au.msn.com/watch/video/blind-puppies-find-homes/xqjl5eh Does this sound sus to anyone else? Or am I just a synic Breeding two carriers together? Are they even pure because it looks like the parents are a lab and a golden? But they were meant to go into the guide dog program??

Ideally you want the dog to vomit within an hr of ingesting something so if it hasn't worked go to a vet and get something more reliable.

I agree, it is incredibly hard and I'm fortunate that I only see it from the relatively safe distance of an Uncle. What I find absolutely amazing in all of this is that it appears quite OK for this forum to diagnose a child as autistic from the scant details in the intial post and then judge the parent/carer accordingly. On the other hand if anyone dares to make a suggestion about animal behaviour without the benefit of a behavioural consult it seems that the sky is about to fall. I think a lot of members on this forum need a good dose of perspective, reality and compassion for people - they are not all bad. I can understand the OP's perspective and would have felt similarly, but I think some of the comments in this thread show a complete lack of understanding. I only judge the parent/carer for not coming over once it became apparent that the OP didnt want the child near the dog. I believe its my responsibility to stop anyone approaching my dog so the initial greeting from the child is neither here nor there. I have a dog who is scared of adults (thankfully not kids although I still dont let him interact with them) but he can cope with people running/walking toward me- its only the patting he cant deal with. So if children approach you pop the dog behind you and body block the child. At this point I expect the adult responsible for the child to come and help me make the interaction safe. I dont allow any child to interact with my dogs without a guardian there. To me the childs status is irrelevant the guardian should have gone into damage control. It is quite clear that Lynn would have been over like jack flash to take control of the situation had it been her own child but thats not what the OP described.

What if any child wanted to play with someone working heavy machinery or sharp equipment or a hole in the ground? There are plenty of non doggie dangers that this child would need to be protected from. I think there is a perception by adults that dogs are not dangerous (and thats generally right). Heavy dangerous machinery used outside will generally have a kill switch but parents take that risk more seriously than a dog that doesnt have an off button!! Also what if it were not agression but an injury that heavy handling could cause further damage? Does this make the senario any different as the child is in no danger but the dogs welfare is put at risk?? I generally dont blame the children (young ones) for coming near my dogs, but I do correct their behaviour and ensure that I try and educate their parents too. It is more difficult where children do not understand body language and I think that the parent in this case should have at least tried to involve themselves in the situation once they saw the OP trying to prevent the interaction even if they missed the child initially going toward the dog. It is nice to see the reaction of some of these kids when I can let them pat my therapy dog, even then I get them or their guardian to ask if they can touch her- just to try and make sure that its all safe and to try and set up a routine.

What Do You Teach First?
Jumabaar replied to Rilla-My-Rilla's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hmmmm Its hard because I tend to name a whole heap of things and pups generally learn them by blindly following the older dogs 1- Name (If I say their name it equals free food, I use names as recalls so it covers that too) 2- Release command- happens when going through doors etc 3- Out (to get out of any room I am in because it covers any emergencies like glass on floor or naughty puppies trying to steal stuff. Usually taught by following the older dogs with pup having no idea what it means) 4- "In crate" 5- And probably the only real thing they learn is to target my hand. In the first week they probably know a hell of a lot more commands than that- my phone ringing means I will get up (so I regularly change the sound). That the laptop coming out means that I am not going to be playing with them for a while. That lights out means sleep time. I dont think its possible not to start training as soon as you get home- simply because you are constantly giving cues to your dog about what your planning etc. I put cues on lots of stuff around the house simply to make my life easier with a few dogs running around. -
Hmmm it now looks like I will be showing my dogs in between flyball races with my mum pulling out of going. Dont laugh TOO hard when you see a muddy grotty girl with blue hair taking in the primped kelpie and Lappie in the show ring. Although I can hope that I havent stacked it by that point-I ALWAYS stack it at Canberra Royal!

I almost tripped on the pug puppy where it was tethered

Franky loves stealing anything off the table- Only when I am looking so I will follow her and take it off her. She doesn't usually go more than a few steps before I tell her to leave it. She LOVES hair ties because she can flip them over her snout and has a 'favourite' one that she will go to great lengths to 'steal' in front of me.

I wasn't meaning that I expected them to cover everything etc, just worried that it would be an excuse for them to knock back everything (thus waste my money). Was pet insurance even around 8 years ago??? If it was, it was far from normal. TBH I've always been more than willing to foot the bill myself. Thesedays it seems that vet's prices are being plumped up nicely thanks to insurance becoming more common and 'real' people not actually having to foot the bill... thus they are becoming less and less affordable. I doubt it has anything to do with insurance becoming more common- It seems to me everything has become more expensive. Why not veterinary services? I don't even think pet insurance is all that common ETA- I had to actually ring up to insure my girl because she was 6.5yrs at the time so probably best to ring and see what they will/won't cover in an 8yr old dog.

Coated and its undesirable to clip them because the coat keeps them cool in summer and warm in winter. -

OT- If you want to do agility then make sure you go to a breeder that already has titles in the sport! My Finnish Lapphund is..... well very interesting to train she is my 'pretty' dog, while the kelpies are sports dogs :) I can't think of anything else MS- all my other suggestions would be double coated breeds so I think you have it covered. -
Thats epic!! Why are you down in Vic I wish I had access to something like that here!!

Christine (Agentvee linked to her website earlier in the thread) would be able to recommend someone to you. Her phone number is on the website.
