  1. I would go with the Hills Diet. I don't think its worth experimenting with other diets if you have a real chance of managing it with diet at this point.
  2. Can that be used at the same time as comfortis?? ETA- looks like other people have Yeap this is what I was thinking considering his so god dam sensitive to everything would it be safe to use both?? If so im off to get it now!! OH said to also bomb the laundry and back yard and wash his bedding in vinegar>? Just check the packaging for any warnings or ring a vet for a more reliable answer

  4. It is depressing to be beaten by a dog with a DQ fault- I do think that it lowers my respect for the judge. They clearly have not refreshed themselves with the standards, and when presented with something unusual they didn't refer back to the standard. What else are they letting slip through?? If I were aiming to promote change I would probably try and get my dog assessed by judges regarding the quality, and also go to a geneticist to indicate that the colour is not a problem. Being awarded by a judge who doesn't know the breed standard doesnt really impress me. But having judges critique the animal (outside the show ring) and acknowledge the colour would speak far more to the quality of the dog, particularly if they were specialist judges!
  5. Thanks very much Jumabaar! That is very reassuring. ETA - just curious - are you in the vet industry? Student :D
  6. I have been to a seminar that Aaron spoke at and he certainly knew what he was doing! The other vets were also positive about him! Good luck and best wishes.
  7. I have seen a young dog who was actually reacting out of fear escalate the behaviour when the warning signs did not 'profit it'. It growled- and it didn't work. When more pressure was applied it air snapped, more pressure was applied and a few weeks later it made contact. It couldn't control its situation and it was trying to communicate how it was feeling but it was ignored so it had to take control of the situation. A dog with a different motivation will have a different reaction- but thats why recommending a behaviourist who will look at the motivation is often the best way to fix a problem. Your method hides the behaviour that you dislike. Working with a behaviourist can get to the motivation behind the behaviour and deal with that so the dog never has the desire to exhibit the problem behaviour.
  8. I own dogs. They sleep on the bed, they get hugs and attention. I train most nights of the week and I am at doggie events most weekend. They do go to the toilet outside, they see a VET, they don't speak english. best of all when I go out I can pop them in crates!! You can't do that with kids
  9. The method you propose sets the dog up to see the owner as the negative reinforcer and the way to make the owner go away is to shut down. So 1- what happens when the human isn't there to shut the dog down and 2- what happens when the owner wants to enjoy their pet?? The dog has been trained to shut down when the owner comes near them?? I don't smack my dogs- if I use an aversive I much prefer it to be gentle and to not be seen as coming from me. I would much prefer the reward for good behaviour to come from me!! I also give warnings that an aversive is coming so the dog has the choice to discontinue the behaviour and come to me and the reward. There is also no chance at the dog nipping- I am not sure why you would ever expect/allow your dog to bite you while you are trying to stop a behaviour?? It may even teach them that nipping is ok and may allow it to escalate to true bites as the bite threshold is lowered..... I agree go to an experienced trainer who will assess the dog and give an appropriate and safe training method.
  10. My advice to the owner would be to invest in a lead and stick with it! Clearly a dog that needs more guidance about appropriate behaviour around other dogs and ultimately it isn't possible to give it guidance when its off lead and out of control.
  11. Everyone has their ethics questioned at some point, that's just life in dogs. The key point at issue is whether your practices stand up to reasonable questioning or not. There are people who sell on mains to people that everyone else will not sell to, and that is not something you could describe as being in the dogs' best interests. And yes there are people that will not sell on main to God himself but that doesn't make selling on main to anyone who comes along some kind of virtue. It's just a signal, among all the other signals out there about which breeders you can envisage buying from and which you cannot. When it boils down to comments like this in a gerneralised sense: The point I am making is that people start to believe that the limited reg routine is how things are supposed be done which it isn't, there is absoultely nothing other than a trend set by breeders I term control freaks in the scheme of ethical breeding practices that requires pups for the pet market to registered on limited unless there is serious breed fault evident at the time of registration would be an exception. Personally I would be more cautious of breeders selling supposedly quality pups on limited, are they perhaps not breedworthy examples with non disclosed faults? or if they are breedworthy examples on limited, the breeder is already pulling stunts to restrict your rights of owning a pup with a registered pedigree. I disagree with assumptions that caution should prevail in regard to breeders selling on mains and would advise prospective puppy buyers myself personally to the contrary. IWhat about quality pups that are carriers? I can disclose that a pup is a carrier for X disease but that doesn't mean that the puppy buyer understands genetics and what that means. Thus anything that is a carrier for something would be on the limited register. If someone approached me later wanting to breed/show then I would look at the pup and see if it turned out nicely and discuss any health problems that don't affect their pup, but would need to be thought about when choosing a mate. Also litters might turn out nice but one of the boys is cryptorchid and there has been a few other family members with that problem so the breeder decides to end that line- why would they sell those pups on mains and perpetuate the problem??? Someone who has a bitch on the limited register from that litter doesn't need anything disclosed to them if they are buying a pet on limited because it really doesn't affect them. I can see plenty of reasons why stunning dogs end up on the limited register- and not all of them about being an elitist!! I wonder if people who advertise that all go on mains are wearing rose tinted glasses and genuinely believe all their dogs are show worthy. Or if they are confident they chose amazing owners who won't abuse the rights and know what a good healthy example of the breed is and only breed ethically. Or if they have had a litter that is genetically important for the breed so they want to make sure that as much of the genetics is preserved. Or are they hoping that people will show their pups a few times because it was actually a really stunning litter that they want to show off!! I guess the answer is to ask the breeder. If you get the heebie-jeebies run like the wind!! If they can give you a well thought out answer then it proves that they know what they are doing. ETA- I personally limit any sold as pets. It doesn't mean I won't discuss putting them on the main register at a later date if they want to show/breed if the dog is quality but I like to keep informed so this way I know if their intentions have changed.
  12. My boy showed similar behaviour and ended up being fear aggressive. Go to a behaviourist now and nip it in the bud before it progresses!! Speaking to someone was the best thing I ever did- I just wish I had done it earlier.

  15. A vet is a business like anything else and there are plenty of businesses who can't legally charge when the job is unsuccessful and have to absorb their losses, why is a vet exempt from the same rules of business is what people are referring to? Not all animals are going to be saveable- do you really want vets telling you to euthanise or refusing to work on your dog just incase they can't save your animal after doing 2k of work?? You would be able to recoup costs if the vet was negligent. In all other cases you agree to the costs knowing the risk up front- the same as doctors and lawyers.
  16. I get in early with Chlorhexadine then curash these days and generally manage to keep most of the coat in the area of a hot spot. Just make sure with the Paw Paw that the area really has dried out 100%- I found out the hard way that it makes the perfect environment for bacteria that create the environment (I used it on clipper rash that turned into a hot spot). The Paw Paw is great for the scabs though!
  17. Most vets are in the profession because they love animals!! Find one that you like and stick with them- the good ones have a wealth of knowledge to share to ensure your dog lives an amazing and healthy life. Perhaps you could look for a vet that does holistic therapy? I am a big fan of my vet- she is AMAZING and has always gone far and beyond what I expected. She has emailed international experts when she didn't know answers to my questions. She was positive when my dog was in a crappy situation and compassionate when I needed a shoulder. Find a vet who you can relate to- your dog deserves it.
  18. Mine was vacated at 6 and then 10 weeks and tested positive in her titre test at 15mth of age.
  19. I take my pups for walks with them sitting in a backpack on my chest. They get to experience lots of sights, sounds and smells but the risk is negligible. Doing a few of these should tire your pup mentally which will probably result in more quiet time then her actually doing zoomies :D You could also start doing some trick training with your pup to tire her brain out. A 5minute session morning and night managed to tire my kelpie pup out quite a bit
  20. I would just not talk to your daughter about the dog. Simple Its quite clear she can't learn a lesson so why keep trying? No matter what happens to this dog (re breed legislation) she will probably just go out and buy something else on impulse in the future. Harassing her will only ruin your relationship, talking about the dog will only encourage her so simply don't talk about it. Tell her your disappointed and move on and talk about other things- if she goes back to talking about the dog repeat that your disappointed and that you want to talk about something else.
  21. I drive up Holker st, turn right onto Hill st and then hang a left and the 5b carpark will be on your left. (It is where the P is next to the Holker Busway is on google maps)
  22. Great photos!! You have reminded me that I need to look at the photos I took at dubbo (that I then got grumpy with when I realised I didn't know how to get them to look the way I wanted lol)
  23. Here in a clinic I payed about that for conjunctivitis by the time I payed for the consult, testing and medication- I didn't go back to them but that wasn't because the price was excessive it was because I thought the service was crap!! I would happily pay that for a vet that had excellent service and was really thorough..... It really depends what the tests and medications were because they can add up really thickly. ETA- consults are generally between 60-80 without any testing or medication.
  24. Perhaps investing in a wire muzzle to try and eliminate the initial problem till she grows out of it?
