  1. Yay for physio!! Clearly you have an awesome vet as its so often forgotten and makes such a big difference!!! Best of luck with her recovery
  2. They do- i think its when you get to three animals. We had to specifically ask about it though.
  3. That is a very common coat for a dilute Kelpie- And is linked to the colour dilute alopecia.
  4. Kelpies suffer from Colour Dilute Alopecia. Finnish Lapphunds don't. There is some study that indicates its not the colour but some genes close to the dilution gene that cause the problem- so not all dilutes will have the problem but it does have a high correlation in breeds where colour dilute alopecia is noted.
  5. I trained my girl to do it as a trick. I am sure others have inadvertently trained their dog to do it too  I trained Ruby to do this too, well, started to. Wanted her between my legs with each paw on my feet, but so far she can only do one paw at a time, bless She won't naturally stand on my feet, and she is quite submissive. Millie just stands on my feet when she jumps into heel position, particularly when she's OTT excited! Abby touches my thigh with her left paw when she is excited and jumps into heel position. I am at a total loss as to how I trained it but my pup has started doing it too That is also assuming its not something hardwired into their thinking as they are mother/daughter but since the pups I haven't trained don't do it I am going to assume its me

  7. If you took your 2kg 8 week old puppy out at 1am to go to the toilet and was presented with a very large amount of blood in their poo, I would imagine you would take it to the only vet that was open at that time of night, regardless of the cost. I didn't care about how much it cost, I was concerned that my dog might die. All specialists were very consistent with their training suggestions so there wasn't a vast range of methods. My judgement may be clouded because I have a vet that is available on call 24 hours to regular clients to make sure I don't have to use a specialist centre just because it is night time. This is vital to breeders. If the breeder was advised the puppy was that ill at 8 weeks they should have requested it be returned the next day for them to deal with at their own vet. I really am shocked too that the breeder didn't ask for the puppy back to assess it for herself re the behaviour as soon as they were advised there was a problem. Have you requested that they take the puppy back and refund the purchase price due to the puppy not being suitable to being an only dog? Not sure how good a relationship the OP has with their vet but for their average puppy owner they wouldn't have the relationship with their vet to have 24hr service. And there are a fair number of vets that even if a pup were admitted during the day with these symptoms would transfer to a specialist hospital for overnight care. I just want to check that the dog has been examined for any neurological problems? If its been to SASH I would assume so but just double checking. It seems unusual for a young pup to have behaviour this bad. Has the pup been otherwise healthy physically since being treated? To answer your question this could all have been bad luck. i.e. with my first litter I had an infestation of fleas hit the litter two days before they left- I had honestly not seen a flea for over 18mths prior to this. Pups were treated and I provided enough treatment for the new owners to keep it up after they went home. On the other hand another breeder may always have a flea problem, not notice it and sell flea infested puppies and not really give a stuff. It doesn't sound like your getting a whole heap of support from the breeder which must be really hard. I hope everything settles for you. Best of luck
  8. Why would they be so hostile against clickers? I don’t understand how it would be a bad way of training? Does anyone know the argument against clickers? We used clicker training for our Frenchie and she picked up all her training so quickly! From my personal experience, it has been an excellent way to train my puppy by targeting the right behaviours. I know my club doesn't allow clickers to be used in class as they feel it could distract other dogs BUT everyone has to have a marker word so its much of a muchness
  9. Cheating just sounds like more fun though Just an aside- I have also found that it makes sense to people when explaining it. Setting a dog up to succeed sounds like hard work. Cheating so they always win sounds much easier.
  10. As a blanket statement, I don't agree. IMO, it would depend on the situation, event, the dog and what you're trying to achieve. Generally speaking though, an appropriate mix of aversives and rewards can work even better than either of these things individually. But again - no blanket statement being made by me .... it depends on the situation, event, the dog and what I'm trying to achieve. Senario- Dog behind fence hits fence. Reward- My dogs begin fence running Punishment- Everyone gets hosed (the only option when you have a moon boot on lol) Result- Dogs don't go near fence. The Aversive in this situation was clearly more powerful than the reward of Fence running. I do agree that one of my dogs likes the aversive (of being told no) because it means she gets to the reward quicker!! For example a sloppy position and she is told no, the next time she does it correctly she earns a treat- generally she locks onto a behaviour pretty quickly. Another of my dogs shuts down with an Aversive so for her unless I am truly trying to extinguish a behaviour its positive all the way. I have trained at a no food club and in all honesty I find using treats such an easy way for me as a trainer to communicate to my dog that they nailed it. But I am a naturally lazy person who likes to cheat when I train my dogs so they always win (but don't tell THEM that )
  11. Any chance of a breakdown of numbers? I hope its sunny!!
  12. Do you realise you do not have to stuff all of this into her every day in one meal? Spread it out over the week! One type of protein per day is plenty. Poor dog will end up with a massive dose of indigestion! No wonder she threw up. To be fair my dogs probably get a similar mix (without any pork) on a regular basis. I do a 'mix' of meat and veggies once a month and everything goes in in and gets frozen. If the dogs are used to it its not a big problem. I add in yoghurt and cheese extra, not in my mix based on how chubby the individual dog is. I would be worried about the high fat content over time though. I don't feed my dogs for an hr before or after any real exercise and its just small amounts of chicken during exercise to decrease the risk of indigestion.
  13. Well, he'd probably only try the chilli once! Abby loooooooove chilli- she ended up with diarrhoea when we spread it all over some pots she was chewing!! I haven't had anyone like the bitter spray though.
  14. No, but harsher punishment will make many think twice about their responsibilities as dog owners. Too many idiots get off with a slap on the wrist, don't/can't/wont contain/control their dogs. Too many victims don't bother to complain because they feel nothing will come of it. I think there needs to be a consequence to make a difference. I don't support BSL, but I do support harsher fines and consequences for serial and serious offenders - the owners, not the dogs. I do think increasing fines for repeat offenders is the only way to try and stop the wrong people owning dogs- but once again it doesn't really stop the dogs being out on the street in the first place. I think that generally the culture that we have- where dog ownership is a right, not privilege is only going to mean this continues. There is also an increasing demographic of people who have nothing to do with dogs- not even a small amount of contact as children to allow them to know the basics of body language, and some of these people are then going out and buying a dog for the first time with no experience and not knowing their responsibilities. We need to target the right information to the right demographic so they listen, rather than write of the info as not relevant to them....
  15. Not sure if its possible but I tend to put something over the area/block access for a few days after clean up too. Even just a chair over it tends to give the area enough time to air and be less appealing.
  16. Walking under my gazebo with your dog, causing mine to bark and then having a go at me- even when there is about 6m of space between me and the next gazebo then having a go at my dogs for scaring your dog.......
  17. I know pebbles,it sounds like a drastic step, but I have seen the huge improvement in quality of life it can bring. Just something to discuss with your Vet. I do agree- probably better for the dog in the long run as all the drugs you use will have side effects.....
  18. ... which isn't an elimination diet? The above I probably do agree with this approach. Best in this case to probably wait and see a specialist before going down the path of elimination trials. May as well just make sure the dog is on a great diet and healthy in every other respect so that the derm can really see what is going on.
  19. Nope although I do hope to buy a light weight rain coat for my Lappie in the near future......
  20. Nope it isnt- that was about seeing how people understand their pets nutrition from memory. I don't think it was a silly survey at all- the majority of pet owners could have quite happily gone right through the questions without problem. The DOL demographic is a little different to what the survey was probably thought of for (AKA the honours student may not have really known a group of crazy raw feeding dog sport enthusiasts even exists so it would be hard to cater to us ;) ) ETA- I managed to submit the survey. Not quite accurate but close enough.
  21. What a vet does to a dog under a GA is more extensive than what you do with your dog at home. But brushing and regular maintenance can mean longer time frames before a proper dental is done.
  22. There is some liability insurance attached to my PetPlan pet insurance. I don't know what it coves though because its not really something I expected to use- just an added bonus.
  23. And if everyone were as responsible as you, we wouldn't have problems - but the majority of pet owners are not being responsible I agree the responsible minority shouldn't have to conform to desexing rules just because some people are ruining it for the others - but I also belive things shouldn't stay as they are and continue to allow acts of blatant cruelty to continue. We would be in a whole heap more crap if it were the majority that were being irresponsible. A large number are responsible by recognising they can't comp with an entire animal- they have them desexed A small number a responsible enough to have entire animals- regardless of their desire to breed them A minority are irresponsible and would be irresponsible if their pets had reproductive organs or not. Some have litters, others roam the streets etc. Teach the part of the minority that can understand about their obligations to their pet. Give cheap desexing to the part of the minority who have bought a pet without being able to desex it but will do it if its cheap. Fine/gaol the rest!! I don't need legislation to tell me what I can and can't do with my own dogs. I have breed twice in 7 years. So for a total of 40weeks in that 7 years I have been a pet owner not a breeder in my opinion because I own pets that I breed with (and show and do flyball and obedience with).
  24. I agree. You only want your dog to be eating one starch and one protein. Add in the van after 6 weeks and see if you get a reaction and go from there but don't use it in your food trial.
