  1. Gave that particular man and his stall a large berth. I managed to see from quite a distance away that they appeared to be just as *cough* minature *cough* as some of the exceptionally well bred ones that I have seen. I guess its not just teacup dogs that the general public are after these days
  2. Talk to all the nurses, doctors, police, fireman and other workers who do night shift and don't get much compensation for staying up all night. It's called doing it because you have a love of the job. I'd love to get double time for night shift! I do think (know) nurses and other human workers start on a significantly higher wage bracket than a vet nurse. So the penalties for night duty for a vet nurse probably just bring them in line with your nightshift penalties. Based on a midwifes salary and what I the vet nurses where I have worked were paid here in NSW. I dont actually think I could survive on a vet nurses salary- which is part of the reason veterinary work is cheaper than human medicine :)
  3. Comparing the Costs of Human vs. Animal Health Care By Dr. Doug Mader Alot has been discussed about the cost of veterinary care in my column over the last couple of months. I have been pushing for preventive health care -- it is always less expensive than treating a problem once it happens. But sometimes, things happen and we may not get a choice when we can seek the care. I was in a serious auto accident many years ago. I have had more than my share of surgeries as a result of that event. Nary a body part that hasn't been cut on, but the record, by far, is my left elbow. The most recent of the seven surgeries was just last month. Interestingly, just prior to this last surgery, I performed a similar surgery on one of my patients. I weigh 175 pounds. My patient was an adult, male golden retriever named Rover weighing in at an even 100 pounds. He and I are about the same age in dog years. I had an olecranon bursectomy. I did an elbow hygroma repair on my quadrupedal counterpart -- a very similar surgical procedure. Note the photo for a comparison. Boxed is a breakdown of the two parallel procedures. I received fantastic care during my surgery and brief stay at the hospital. I guarantee that Rover got just as good a quality of care as I did. I think service and compassion were a wash in this comparison. I know for a fact that many pet owners think veterinarians charge too much. I hear that all the time. Take a look at this side-by-side fee comparison. The same surgery, one-tenth the cost. Dr. Mader is an ABVP board certified veterinary specialist practicing in the Keys. 4. I would love it if one of my puppy owners asked about this!! So not in anyway unreasonable :)
  5. Regardless of what the breeder says maybe see if an obedience club near you is doing Rally O, as that is probably something else your kids could compete in and it doesnt matter what register they are on Also you cant compete in junior handlers with a dog under 12mths of age- so perhaps ask your breeder if they could transfer her onto the main register after assessing her at 10mths?
  6. I used to live on the same property as my grandparents, and my dog spent the day with them while I was at Uni. I however took her to agility and flyball and made sure she had a heap of fun with me most nights of the week !! She ended up bonding with me exceptionally well, as have all subsequent dogs brought up in the same situation. That being said I did lose one dog to my grandpatents when I moved out because they missed her too much so we now share her and she visits between both houses .
  7. I would just say that now that he has reached his 'old man' it might be worth looking at a change in diet for him to address his changing needs- so no need to comment on the old diet at all, just indicate that his needs have changed. You can then suggest a different meal plan and explain why this will address his changing requirements ie higher in oils which are good for old joints etc. I would explain that you didn't have time to get his normal food and so you put him on your senior doggie diet and he really liked it and perhaps provide him with a day or two for when he goes home so his owner can see him enjoying it too. I would also make it super easy and provide all the contact details via email so they cant get lost ;) I am guesing he is on this diet because its easy to buy and the dog eats it. If you provide another easy to source food that the dog eats I am sure there wont be a problem
  8. Oh I dont have a problem with the link. Very clearly marked as a do not open. I just cant understand how someone could do it. Truly beyond comprehension
  9. I opened the link and am lost for words.
  10. Shutzhund involves obedience as well as bite work. And i think obstacle work (so their version of agility). If the dog gets paid for something its just a new 'trick' so I cant see why they couldnt do 'tricks' that become a different dog sport. They dont understand that its something different.
  11. So long as you keep reinforcing the different disciplines its no trouble. Abby does flyball and obedience without a problem. I did add in doggie dancing which caused a few obedience issues as she kept doing spins instead of returning to heel- purely because I rewarded the spins sooooo much more than the return to heel because I was teaching a spin. As soon as I started rewarding the heel again she was fine. She knew the difference between the two moves- but she was doing the one that had a better payment schedule  Abby looooooooorves learning new tricks but she also loooooooooves to run fast at flyball and do the same thing over and over again.
  12. Show homes are not alllllll that common. There are dogs that are not shown but either have a large genetic value, or are run on to see how they turn out and used if they are worthy/desexed if they are not. The title per se doesnt make them any better so a local pet home where the breeder can do a proper assessment as the pup grows regarding structure and temperament may be the best thing for that individual. As a breeder I am not to fussed if the dog I use over my bitch is not a champion- its much better for me to know the dog well and know how he will match with my bitch. Two champion dogs do not always make champion puppies. My first girl came from two dogs shown very little (not titled) and she is a champion and produced champions. I boils down to the fact that if its a great dog it will be a great dog regardless of being shown. Other breeders get their puppy owners to just come to the occasional big event (2-3 times per yr) rather than showing regularly and that pup might still end up with a title if they are good enough without being to onerous on their owners.
  13. I was going to say the exact same thing stans mum. I know you love this puppy Donatella but this co ownership thing doesn't sound very fair to me & I wouldn't be entering into it at all.I am not an experienced breeder but you would be surprised how many "lovely little puppies" you could fall in love with with a lot less baggage than this one if you bide your time & keep looking. That's if you can't own him outright. And I will say wait and really say what the breeder is like- this may be a very genuine case of the breeder wanting to keep genetics available but not being able to do it themselves. If it seems all one sided then run away but if they are happy to give you stud fees, freeze semen early and you get a say about when and who he is used over then it may be very equitable.
  14. This map is pretty good re distribution. There are pockets inland as well as coastal regions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ixodes_holocyclus_distribtion_map.png
  15. They are now also doing large animal rescue training for both the rescue crews AND the vets!! Much safer than DIY rescues (and free here in NSW so joe blow doesnt end up needing rescue as well as the animal) with better outcomes for the animals.
  16. Good luck!! I hope its something that R&R can fix.
  17. I sold a boy on terms because I couldnt keep him myself. He was significantly reduced cost wise (more so than your dog). I only needed him to be entire until 12-18mths so I could get some semen samples and I was going to pay for health tests although it was expected that he would remain entire for longer. All null and void due to health issues but the owner was happy with that situation- he was very much her dog! It is VERY common in some breeds (if you look at most Finnish Lapphund breeders sites for example you will see a large number that are co-owned) and other breeds it almost never happens.
  18. I have only one thing to add to this conversation Kelpies are EXCEPTIONAL human trainers!!! At this point you can retrain everything so just work on a good communication/reward system. Once your dog knows how to get what they really really want (the reward that you are going to give) AND they know what the cue really means (and that might mean that they have to learn that 'sit' means bottom on ground in front of the big green chair, in the lounge room while you have slippers on as well as bottom on ground when you are in the kitchen with sneakers on and all other places since we dont know what the dog thinks is a cue the first time it learns something) then you will have a dog that will turn itself inside out to do what you want!!
  19. I tend to tweak the diet of my dogs when they get scurffy- it doesnt always fix it but it is something to consider.
  20. You may be able to get in contact with a Canine Physiotherapist who can put you in the right direction regarding exercise. I suggest getting in contact even if you do have surgery as they can work magic!
  21. There are tablets that a vet can prescribe here in Australia if other methods havent worked. Here is a website about car travel and the medication http://www.carsickfree.com.au
  22. I also keep an eye on the salt content of my treats- so try to mix chicken in with my more valuable/salty treats. It picks up the yummy taste but bulks out the amount a fair bit. I use a HEAP of treats when I am out- so for people using less its not an issue.
  23. Was goat tested for? (I cant remember if it would be covered by the beef test)
  24. It says flea "bomb" and I know all the ones I have seen have required the animals and humans to be removed from the area being done. So it may not have been the combination- it may have been misuse of a product. Just speculation. He may not have used a flea bomb- it may just be his terminology.
  25. Epilepsy!!! Genetic tests galore!! Stem cells- the how, much, when, where and how to deliver it for dogs specifically More on how raising pups affects their future temperaments
