Nothing about the lack of credibility of their expert? Where did it actually say Marie-of-the-dead-puppies was the same Marie as on the site though? Site is based in Vic, Marie is.. either from QLD or just didn't bother to change her location from the default. But did use the word "mom" so.. The profile picture of the acedogclub twitter is the same as the DOL userpic. Hrm.. I glanced through some of the articles though and it didn't really seem like her writing style. Either way, I don't think I'll be buying from that site again. Edited to add.. Although now that I think about it.. my order got sent only a day after I posted in this thread about it so.. yeah..

Just wondering if anyone here knows the person who runs this site?
-
No idea of who they are but I noticed this bit.. What on earth are they feeding dogs that costs $60 per week per dog? I feed very large dogs for $10.50 each per week and they tend to get fat on that amount if I'm not making them exercise every day. Also $250 per week to train a dog.. no wonder they need donations with expenses like that.

Yes. I have noticed that. She never seems to post in the same thread twice. Maybe because she/he is too busy posting things here. I ordered something from them in December 2012 and it still hasn't arrived. So much for the express shipping option.. Also.. wtf at the rat poison thing.. and calling the bitch "mom". And generally being a weirdo. The link I posted appears to be very similar but not the same as the website of Ace Dog Supplies. Yes, weirdo. The first is just a subdomain of the second. Which means whoever owns the second, also created the first. Although the whole thing is regsitered to some guy in Victoria anyway.

I've found that muzzles actually make it worse. People see the big dog can't bite and give their small yappers a full lead to "go and say hello" to the big dog (i.e. go and bark/nip/jump at). It's tempting at times to just pop the muzzle off and see how quickly the owners can reel their dogs back in.. Our clinic is generally pretty good about the waiting area though. If we have a dog with any issues, we wait in the car park and they come out and get us, cats are always kept in carriers and the nurses seem aware of what's going on. Compare that to a much bigger (and very "respectable") clinic we had to use one weekend when our normal vet was booked out.. we had to take a grey in for a C5 and an eye check and in the waiting room.. someone had a rabbit in one of those low, open washing baskets. Very fortunately for us, the greyhound in question had zero prey drive and was more interested in trying to get her head out of an open window.

I have to agree with that. Live export is a questionable practice but will banning it help greyhounds or my rescue generally.. no. Ditto for most of the other stuff, too. Some things I would like to see would be rescues being legislated (unfortunate but necessary), CoPs for rescue/rehoming organisations and.. databases of rehomed animals (so that animals that end in up in pounds can be checked to see if they came from a rescue, along with temp testing results for each animal- using a standard temp test- making rescues accountable, basically). There was other stuff but hell if I can remember if now.

See, this is where I get less supportive. In the case of advocacy groups, where exactly is the money going and who is it -really- helping? I actually had a little bitch/whinge about this on FB a while back, let me see if I can find the post.. Now, that rant was specific to greys but you could apply it to rescue/welfare generally. Do we want to funnel money into an advocacy group when that same money could actually help a dog? What is the advocacy group doing with donated funds, besides raising awareness (which is generally free to do) or promoting the group itself? Those would be my questions. Also, if the group claims donated funds will be used to help members, how are funds distributed? Which also brings up the question of why have the middle man at all, why not direct people to donate to the groups they want to support. There was more but just thinking about it melted a bit of my brain and now the whole thing just seems like a massive potential mess of problems :/

I have one of the committee members on FB, I can PM you her name if you'd like it?
-
I think most groups would agree with that one though, surely.
-
That is the aim for any sort of advocacy group though. If you disagree with how things are done, it'd be better to actually explain what you think needs changing (and why) to help build something that is representative of the expected standards for rescues. Threads like this don't serve any constructive purpose generally- which is a shame because a lot of people here have valuable experience and knowledge that could go a very long way towards creating something really great. If DRAV managed it, I don't see why it can't be done nationally.

Sounds very much like what Pound Rounds professed to be in the beginning. Not to mention that a quick google search on the registrant of the website(s) brings up all sorts of armchair activism references... I would prefer that these people DON'T speak for me or my group without any consultation thank you very much! T. What's the bet that it is someone associated with PR - another money grabbing exercise. If it is them then it's laughable that they call the DOLF the stalkers, because the PR supporters are far worse. A lot of assumptions are being made here based on absolutely no evidence. If people are serious about getting their questions/concerns answered, why not contact the group and invite them to participate in this conversation, instead of the usual bitching/assumptions.

Oh dear funny how that is the same quote that was psoted on Greylvr's facebook page. The people who run this group are not greylvr or her partner. So yes, it is a coincidence- perhaps posted by someone who has had less than positive experiences with people here (which is more than just one person and certainly not limited to dodgy types).

As far as I know.. the organisation was (is?) based in QLD but because of QLD laws, they couldn't have a secretary who resided in Tasmania (which was Rachael) and I suggested they look into incorporating in a state with less restrictive laws for their committee. They may have done that but I'm not sure. They're definitely not related to greylvr in any way and as I understand, they were looking to create something similar to DRAV in Victoria- which (if they can make it work) would be a really good thing for rescue. Edited to add.. I'm not entirely up-to-date with the politics and current ins/outs of mainland groups so when I first looked at the site, there was nothing there that concerned me. Although obviously a group must be able to verify members for the heart system so perhaps that needs to be suggested to them? As far as the heart ratings.. from what I can recall of the questions, it was things relating to welfare (five Fs, etc) and euth policies (under what circumstances are animals in care PTS, etc). I think it might be worth suggesting a system where adopters can rate their experience to help ensure both sides of the adoption story are being told.

We have a hard time rehoming black greyhounds, definitely. What a lot of people don't realise is that black is easier to keep clean, seems to shed less (in my experience, anyway) and can look really amazing for fairly minimal work. Keep a black greyhound reasonably trim and the light reflects off movements in the muscles, looks beautiful. My absolute favourite is black greyhounds with white socks.. Look at his fancy feets :D (Panterka's ff, Spanna) Beautiful boy, I am fostering a black greyhound here ATM but she is blowing all her coat out so not very shiny. Yeah, saw the pic you posted. That's an awful lot of kennel coat- your brushing arm is going to be muscley by the time you're done with that :p Some black shampoo, a furminator and some Essential 6 definitely help.

Black :D There's nothing more satisfying than turning a scruffy brownish dog into a glossy black beauty. When I went to pick up the teenage hellhound, the breeder walked me over to a pen filled with wiggly black puppies and I was so excited.. and then he reaches in and yanks out a mostly white puppy with a couple of black patches on his head :p So much much for "My next grey will be a black". He did develop fairly heavy ticking but it's not quite the same thing. Fawn is my least favourite colour, especially if kennel coat is involved. So hard to make that look really amazing (without a bit of cheating, anyway)

Meals For Mutts Kangaroo And Lamb
Maddy replied to goldenluv's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
to me that is expensive for something full of rice Mhrm. ToTW is $19.95 here for 2kg and in terms of ingredients, looks far better for a fairly small amount extra. Edited to add.. Meals for Mutts looks very similar to Black Hawk- which in my opinion (having used it to supplement feeding raw) is a rubbish food. I'd stick to ToTW or Ziwipeak, if you can afford it. -
What Shampoo Do You Use And Why?

What's the Hartz like? I saw Pet Deals (or whatever it's called) had it half price and was considering getting a few bottles to try. -

Linkie? Apparently the cheapest place to get it http://maandpaws.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=948&cPath=121&m1track=googlebase It looks like it might be a bit cheaper than ToTW but in terms of quality.. definitely not worth the price. -

doesn't look too babd, but for me it is not grain free if it contains rice! Yeah, I'd be immediately wary of any food that is marketed so dishonestly. That aside, the ingredient list really isn't all that great. Two meats listed together, probably to bump them to the top of the list, ahead of the rice (the grain-free rice, no less). Which means your first ingredient is probably rice :/ -
Same here. We have several lots of drinking water for them (some are designed to be harder to stuff dirty paws into) and in summer, it gets changed (emptied completely and refilled, not just topped up) at least twice a day and the buckets/bowls given a scrub out at the end of the day to keep algae out- I wouldn't expect them to drink out of anything I wouldn't drink out of myself. Suggesting that water just be topped up seems not just unhygenic but potentially very dangerous for the dog's health. Considering some of the stuff I've seen mine eat, I wouldn't be too concerned about a dirty water bowl! That said, ours get emptied and washed out at least once a day, more often if it's hot and the water starts to warm up. They also have several different containers to choose from, so they always drink out of the manky wading pool that they've been playing and splashing in with their filthy paws! :) There's a difference between a water bowl with a bit of day-old dirty paw water in it and a water bowl that hasn't been cleaned in two months (which is the recommended time to replace the dog rocks) and not even had a proper water change during that time. I can't believe anyone would willingly use Dog Rocks as per the manufacturers instructions*. That's just.. disgusting. *Of course, if you don't use them per instructions and they don't work, you're SOL if you want a refund. Funny, that.
