With the neutralisation training, what would be the ideal age to start that training, and is there any other information about it out there? I'm very interested in learning more about it. As for the OP, I'm a total newbie when it comes to the issue (I've never owned a young puppy) but I'm under the impression that dogs ignoring other dogs probably comes down to a combination of breed, genetics, socialisation (probably especially while a puppy) and training. It's something that shelter dogs often struggle with, especially at first, because if a dog ends up at a shelter they may not have been considered part of the family, so they might not be well trained, socialised or taken on many outings so the dog could develop socialisation skills. There will probably always be exceptions at the shelters though.

Is that the term for it? It's front two paws were facing more inwards than outwards, one more than the other, and it seemed hard for it to walk.

I was in town today and saw a dog that kind of looks like a french bulldog X (although im not 100% sure) and it had turned in front feet and it was hobbling like it was painful to walk What would cause this? A genetic defect? I felt so sad seeing the poor dog like that

The dog always eats/licks the cat's left overs out of their bowl in the morning. It's never been a problem. ETA thanks Clyde

With VAN if you want to try it, see if you can get a sample pack first and introduce it slowly. Some people here said their dogs wouldn't eat it.

It was just from the local supermarket. It doesn't smell funny or anything, and it's not close to the use by date. I agree, a pet's health is way more important. It just seems weird though! It wasn't even pet mince and it wasn't from a dodgy shop or anything. Thanks for the advice.

Luke, I feed my dog VAN, chicken frames, wings, mince, canned makeral (ok so that's not raw), offal and natural yoghurt and raw eggs occasionally. The VAN website has a lot of info on raw feeding Vets All Natural Just make sure that you supervise whenever he's eating bones. I also don't feed necks anymore because I've heard of too many instances of dogs choking.

We raw feed my cats on human grade mince. Yesterday we bought a fresh batch (not close to expiry or anything) and fed them last night. When we woke up this morning, the mince had hardly been touched (unusual, because they're used to mince.) My dog normally eats the cat's left overs, so this morning he ate the mince. But then within an hour, he had vomited it all back up again twice. Since vomitting he just hasn't been himself. He's not following me around the house, and just wanting to rest. So I guess there are two issues. Do I need to worry about my dog? Is there anything I can give him to give him back his energy? Do I assume the rest of the mince is bad? I'm hesitant to throw the lot out, it was around $40 worth (2 bulk packs.) Divided up as soon as we got home and then it was frozen.

I spoke to them but they couldn't give me much info because of legal issues I think. They said they don't recommend it be used with frontline because it hasn't been tested. And they said some people do use it with other products and they haven't heard of any bad affects. They told me to wash my hands after handling my dog, before I handle my cat. I got the feeling they weren't allowed to tell me anything else. Because if something went wrong they could be liable.

Normally I use Frontline Plus fortnightly on my dog for ticks, but I was given a Preventic collar so I decided to use that instead this time. So he was due for his Frontline today (his last Frontline was 14 days ago) and instead of applying it I put the collar on him. I'm a bit nervous as I don't know if I've put it on too loose or too tight. I followed the directions that said to fit 2 or 3 fingers under the collar. But he is half poodle and has all these loose flaps of skin under his neck. So I put the collar on so 2 or 3 fingers can fit after I allowed for the loose skin, I figured that would be more comfortable. But now I'm worried it might be too loose and fall of, and he could chew it I didn't know how much length to leave on it before cutting off the excess, I only left maybe 1cm, I hope that was enough. It says toxic etc on the packaging. And I know it's bad for cats. But how careful do I have to be? If I put another collar on my dog and accidentally come into contact with the Preventic, do I then have to wash my hands immediately? Can I pat my cat after handling my dog's collars and coming into contact with the Preventic? What about when my dog and cat play, if it brushes against my cat? When my dog needs a correction I sometimes grab the collar directly, instead of correcting through the lead. What happens if I touch the Preventic but can't wash my hands right away (like if we are out.) How does the Preventic work on coated breeds? It's meant to go through the skin I think, so how does it work if the furr around the collar is really thick? Is it meant to smell so strong, and will the smell go away after a while? Can somebody who has used Preventic a lot on their dogs please reassure me or advise me on some of those things? Has anybody used Frontline Plus (fortnightly) at the same time as a Preventic? Is that too much? Thanks for any help. I'm really nervous about it, probably being silly but I've never used a tick collar before.

i always wondered about that...my boy loves kibble so we use it sometimes in training as treats, but he might also get a raw bone as dessert that night. is there any evidence that feeding both at the same time is really bad? and would it be better to say, if you feed kibble don't feed raw for 24 hours..? or is it just don't feed the two together at all? Sorry I don't know. I was just repeating what was told to me. I also use kibble as training treats (though he doesn't get them very often anymore) but normally when using them, he wouldn't get them past say 3pm. And then he doesn't get fed his raw until say 8pm. I would like to know the answer to your question too though from someone who knows.

I would try breaking the patties up and mixing them with something you know she does well on and loves, like raw egg, yoghurt, mince meat etc. The trick I think, is to make them smell like something she's familiar with and loves. And don't give up too soon. It takes some dogs two weeks or so to accept new food. Just go slower for her, add a little more each day and combine it with food she already likes. Then as she accepts it, add more BARF and less of the other food you're mixing it with. You could also try breaking them up and stuffing them into her chicken frames. Some people warn against feeding raw food at the same time as feeding cooked food (eg kibble) due to different digestion rates, so that's something to consider too.

Curly1 I'm confused... so it needs to be frozen and you have to give your dog a special wormer if feeding liver, kidney etc? Is Heartguard once a month ok as the wormer? Thanks!! And I can't find roo tails anywhere, where does everyone get them from? :D

We use kibble (a small handful goes a long way), small pieces of cheese and pieces of cooked carrot. Occasionally I will use a cocktail frankfurt, and cut it up really tiny and mix it with kibble. The frankfurts aren't really good for them though so I wouldn't use them regularly, but it's handy because the kibble gets the smell from the frankfurt and then he is more interested in the kibble than he would normally be.

Thanks guys. Besides, people eat that stuff don't they anyway? Beef liver and kidney. Though maybe it's a different 'grade' to the stuff you find with the dog bones at the supermarket. At the moment I'm giving dried liver treats but I want to start feeding fresh to make sure he's getting a balanced raw diet
