If you don't already own a crate for Teddy, I'd suggest you get one and crate train him. He can be crated safely inside while other dogs are visiting.

What Did You Feed Your Dogs
poodlefan replied to ShesaLikeableBiBear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ted is 13.5 years old so he's my oldest dog. I started him on chicken wings, lamb shanks and necks and an Australian brand of kibble called Eureka that is no longer made. It was chicken and rice based and had Steve Austin on the pack. -
I understand that. But every time you put him in a situation where he aggresses, you reinforce the behaviour. He can be walked without being allowed close enough to people to bite them and kept away from your friend's dogs so he can't start fights. Its not fun having an aggressive dog but you can prevent a lot of his behaviour with sensible preventative management. Go see K9Pro - he's who I'd recommend for anyone having dog aggression issues.

I wonder if she had an allergic reaction to the sutures. Has the vet offered any more explanation?

How's her paw looking now?

No mention of a domestic call out? What's this then? Tralee: You think completion of a first aid course makes you an expert in law enforcement responses? Riiiight. Yeah, police just LOVE attending domestic violence incidents.. can't wait to get to them. NOT. More legislation that is relevent (same Act as before) Someone called the cops remember. If the call came from within the house, the police had the power to enter the house without a warrant.
-
I tend to wonder how realistic that aim is. You may be able to learn to manage his behaviour but perhaps only in limited environments. If you know he's a handful and he doesn't enjoy the company of other dogs, why don't you leave him at home?
-
But he was "weally, weally bwave." Or perhaps he was weally weally concerned for the welfare of someone in the house - this was a call to a domestic violence incident remember. And no, a policeman doesn't need owner permission to enter property in all circumstances. Domestic violence call out - this guy had breached an AVO.. I think there were grounds to enter the property don't you? Pays to check your facts before asserting that police have no more powers of entry than anyone else.
-
Seriously, you think any dog bite to the face results from deliberately getting close to dog's mouth??? From the words of the story the cop didn't even make it THROUGH the front gate. Dogs can jump you know. A man is having facial surgery as a result of this attack and you have to put the boot in. Classy.

You should be able to feel the ribs with the flat of your hand without pressure. For a lot of dogs that means you'll be able to see the last few. A Labrador should still have a waist and an obvious tuck. Here's a good example. And another. Labs shouldn't look like beef cattle.

Close Encounter With A Brown Snake
poodlefan replied to mumtoshelley's topic in General Dog Discussion
My guess is you'd have seen symptoms by now. A friend of mine's dog was bitten by a brown and died within 30 minutes. Keep an eye on her though - juveniles are just as, if not more deadly than, adults. -
Who Feeds Canned Dog Food?
poodlefan replied to shepherdpower's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It smells bad enough on the way in. On the way out? Dogs fed on it tend to really stink too. The Hills I/D cans are literally chicken and rice - very firm. I can stomach those. -
Rebanne if you plan to make regular payments would you consider some kind of debit card like Visa debit? The GE card is fine IF you pay it off in the interest free period. A lot of folk don't and that's how GE gets its profit.

Who Feeds Canned Dog Food?
poodlefan replied to shepherdpower's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have fed Hills I/D to Darcy when he's been recovering from HGE. Other than that I don't use it. -
How old is the pup? If she's had months of accidents, you have months of reinforcement to undo. If three different sets of criteria are being applied by three different people in two different homes, the pup may simply not be "getting it". Consistency is the absolute key to this. Don't blame the dog for what people have taught her. Every accident reinforces what you don't want. I'd be starting with laying down the law to the OH and the parents. If they can't be relied on to do the right thing then leave Pia outside where she can't get it wrong. Shift the other dog to your parents if necessary for a couple of weeks. Why can't Pia be in the same yard as her? In the long term, providing Pia with free access outside would be the ideal solution. Divide the back yard if you have to.

Show me two dog owners and I'll show you two different opinions. A lot of people think any sign of ribs on a dog means they're too skinny. I've heard some pretty "interesting" views expressed by dog park users from time to time but it doesn't make them right. A lot of the more knowledgeable people I know don't use dog parks much.
-
Definitely a pup. I like my pups to be socialised and trained in my preferred manner. That means I do it. I'm not "into" baby puppies but you only get one chance to start them right.
-
The solution is easy. Ignore them. If you're happy and your vet is happy, why should the opinion of a person in dog park carry any weight?
-
The only way you'll get the dog to stay on his bed all night away from you IMO is to use a crate. Since you seem reluctant to go that path, I don't have any suggestions to offer. In a new environment, without a den such as a crate would provide, you will be the only familiar thing. The dog will want to be with you.

Is he crabbing? Is his body slanted towards the diagonal? I'd not be panicking about a 14 week old pup. I would be taking him to see a decent canine chiropractor.

That's why requests for breed advice shouldn't stop at what breed to get but who to get it from!
-
They need to get out and meet the kinds of dogs they're interested in rather than listen to stories. A breeder of sound dogs mentally and physically is a must regardless of breed. The more popular the breed, the more BYB ads in the Trading Post or dogs available in pet shops, the harder they must look to find a decent breeder. Popular breeds and colours always attract those more interested in a fast buck than the dogs themselves.

Please Tell Me Everything You Know About...
poodlefan replied to Kelly_Louise's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
All I know is that diet can make a huge difference to the longevity of dogs with kidney issues. Lower protein diets are better I think. -
A well bred Miniature Poodle would tick all the boxes. They tend to be pretty gregarious. If Mum feeds, walks and generally cares for the Schnauzer, that would explain its focus.

Help! Puppy Nearly Choked On Chicken Wing
poodlefan replied to Kobi'sDaisy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Feed the wings whole. If he's getting them down too quickly go to drumsticks or carcasses. Cutting them up makes them easier to swallow too quickly. They need to have to chew them up. I suggest you give him the wing and give him some distance. Hovering can make dogs anxious about food sometimes. Unless you can see his spine and all his ribs, he's getting enough food. When he starts to get too ribby, up the amount.
