  1. FHRP cheats anyway. She can do the best whistle with her fingers between her teefs. I can't.
  2. US comedian Bill Cosby used to advise parents to give their children a name that ends in a vowel sound. Good for yelling out in a looooooong way, so the the sound carries to the kid who's probably 4 houses away. Like, Annie becomes Annieeeeeeeeeeeeee! Whereas Anne just stops dead. All my dogs names end or are yelled in the "y" ending sound.. and I do it to other people's dogs too. So FHRP's magnificent specimen of a male GSP named Polo becomes.. well you can figure it out.
  3. Just remember: if you can't yell it, don't use it!!!
  4. I'm not sure the ACT is better at breed ID than anywhere else. Its just that no dog's life hangs on the process. We're a Territory - only about 300,000 folk. About 42,000 dogs I believe. Bite stats? I've never looked into it. I don't think there's much publically available but I might dig around.
  5. Hi Mark, I'd have voted for this online training text book for the basics. Sorry, its a link.
  6. As Ian Dunbar points out (discussing dog to dog aggression) it's not just about the number of incidents that happen but the severity of incidents. Any anti-BSL proponent who suggests that a SWF bite is likely to be a serious as an APBT one needs to rethink that. Here's the best fact you can possibly offer about Breed Specific Legisation and community safety. BSL doesn't work. That's it. Have a good look at the Calgary approach to dangerous dogs in the community - it worked beautifully because it targetted owners and dangerous dogs.
  7. When one of the tactics of the anti-BSL lobby was to offer governments statistics claiming that other dog breeds were more dangerous, is it any wonder they stood on their own? I disagreed with those tactics and many others employed. None of them worked but they kept flogging deceased equines all over the country. I have a very open mind and live in the one place in Australia where its still legal to own an APBT without restriction. I"ll fight to keep it that way but not using the tactics of old.
  8. I would teach the automatic sit by starting with "heel" as a cued sit in the heeling position and adding movement afterwards. You need a fresh cue for the 'stand'.
  9. Jane Harper is one behaviourist recommended on this forum. I would contact her or another suitable person without delay.
  10. What laws have been changed at the federal level? I'm not aware of any. The only federal law that I'm aware of relating to the APBT is the import ban.
  11. You need professional help. Where are you?
  12. Quite a few folk seem to limit water after a certain hour at night to ensure their dogs make it through without needing to toilet. I'm not a fan. Unless the dog has an issue with excessive water consumption, I figure they drink when they need to and if that's at night, so be it.
  13. Yes, the Lab would need to be toilet trained in the same manner as a pup. However he should have better bladder control. I'd have bigger questions about how the two dogs get on? Do they? A one year old Boxer might prove too much for the older Lab to handle all the time. I'd also want to know about what sort of manners the Lab has - walking on lead etc.
  14. Two GSDs - one is now retired. Both are fine with the IGs but not with one another. One of the IGs likes to worm his way into the working GSD's run and crash out with him.
  15. The police dogs next door live with two Italian Greyhounds.
  16. Or it could be something as simple as Coccidia or a stomach irritation. Don't panic.
  17. 1. I agree with the breeder. take the garlic out of the diet. It can make dogs anaemic and they certainly don't need it. 2. Get a sample of the bloody poo and take it and the pup to the vet. 3. Rather than feeding mince and Coprice, I'd personally feedng meat on the bone and a better quality kibble. But see a vet first. If it improves on a bland diet, my guess is its nothing sinister.
  18. 1. Don't believe everything you hear at the dog park. Car tyres? Riiiight. 2. Hills Science Diet doesn't rate too well with most DOLers because its got a high grain content for its price. My guess is that these are probably the most popular premiun foods: Artemis Canidae Royal Canin Nutro Pro Plan Eagle Pack I feed Advance and a lot of folk swear by Black Hawk, It depends on what your dog finds palatable and how they do on it.
  19. Absolutely no winners in that story.
  20. Howard the Whippet is deeply suspicious of ceiling fans - I can guarantee he's never been hit by one.
  21. Get a spring or self closer for the screen door. And congratulate yourself you've taught a recall and resisted the instinct to chase her!!! I bet your pulse was racing after that!
  22. Do you think it's possible that you view his behaviour through a different lens because of his background? I wonder if a dog's history (or perceived history) can colour our perception to some degree. My guess is the special ones are special regardless of background.... maybe?
  23. At that grade, I don't think you did have much choice. Corvus is right. A carnivore like a dog moves or it starves. She will adapt and it may be with good physio you get a better recovery than you are expecting. Take it day by day.
